The Peak Design brand ballooned in popularity following the launch of its Travel Tripod back in 2020 – a seriously compact mobile tripod that can fit along on the side or bottom of virtually any backpack thanks to a space-saving compact design and lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum construction. So what if we told you that Peak Design was taking a bold new step into the professional tripod world?

On Tuesday, Peak Design launched a new Kickstarter campaign for what they’re calling the Pro Tripod, which the brand calls its newest flagship line of “truly radical, professional tripods” for professional photographers. The Kickstarter campaign only had a $100,000 goal, but it reached well over $2M in the first 24 hours, and that should tell you something about the loyal following Peak Design has built up.
Peak Design’s Pro Tripod keeps the same high-level craftsmanship as the original Travel Tripod, but with larger, burlier hardware that feels absolutely solid in even the most rugged environments. It features ultra sturdy carbon fiber legs, a CNC machined ball head hub, and a flanged carbon fiber center column. These features make this tripod especially capable with bigger and heavier camera rigs.
Despite being beefier, the Pro Tripod still makes excellent use of space thanks to a space-saving design and unfolds and packs back up just as quickly as the Travel Tripod ever did, thanks to the handy quick-release tabs on the legs. This makes it quick and easy to set up in the field, especially outdoors on uneven footing.
The CNC machined ball head hub is equipped with a quick disconnect-like feature and a redundant secure locking mechanism, ensuring your camera rig doesn’t accidentally fall off. It also features built-in fluid panning, and with an optional accessory called Tilt Mod, you can use the Pro Tripod as a video tripod. Using a smartphone? No problem. The Pro Tripod works with Peak Design smartphone accessories.
Peak Design’s Pro Tripod will be available in three different sizes, including Pro Lite, Pro, and Pro Tall sizes, in that order. These sizes offer greater options to photographers who may want smaller or larger options, as well as thinner and lighter or taller and stiffer. They weigh 3.7, 4.2, and 4.5 pounds respectively, while having a deployed max height of 64, 66.3, and 77 inches respectively.
If you’re interested in backing the Peak Design Pro Tripod, then you can do so from the Peak Design Kickstarter campaign page. There are two separate pricings available – a ‘wait and save’ option, which delivers the same product after a lengthier wait for less money and a ‘get it ASAP’ option which delivers the same product more quickly for a slight upcharge. The early bird pricing is as follows:
- Pro Lite Tripod – wait and save for $619, or get it ASAP for $709
- Pro Tripod – wait and save for $659, or get it ASAP for $799
- Pro Tripod Tall – wait and save for $729, or get it ASAP for $889
You might have noticed these aren’t your ordinary big box store prices for a tripod, and you’d be right. These aren’t cheap. They’re made to extremely high standards with impeccable build quality out of sturdier materials, including carbon fiber and aluminum. Peak Design also stands behind their product for life, just in case anything ever breaks, they’ll take care of you.
If you’ve never used a Peak Design tripod before, I’d have to ask: why not? They’re my favorite.
