Untethered

Looks Like We’re Not Getting an Untethered Jailbreak for Christmas After All

Did MuscleNerd spoke too fast when he said last week that we'd get an untethered jailbreak for Christmas? It sure looks like it when reading this tweet Comex sent out a few minutes ago saying that he was going to miss his Christmas deadline..

At this point, I'm not sure whether Comex is working on an untethered solution or a full new jailbreak tool (jailbreakme?) One thing is sure though, we might not get anything from him this Christmas...

Next Version of RedSn0w to Allow Quick iPhone Untethered Jailbreak

If you decided to update to iOS 4.2.1 and jailbreak using RedSn0w, you most likely have a tethered jailbreak, which requires you to plug your iPhone in and kickstart it with RedSn0w every time you reboot. Very inconvenient.

We've had words for a while that the Dev Team was working on an untethered jailbreak, which MuscleNerd confirmed would be available before Christmas.

Today, the Dev Team's frontman gave us more information about this untethered jailbreak via a tweet in reply to someone asking if we'll have to fully restore the iPhone and run RedSn0w again in order to benefit from all the untethered goodness...

MuscleNerd Confirms Untethered Jailbreak to Ship Before Christmas

Earlier this month, iPhone hacker Comex mentioned on Twitter that an untethered jailbreak would be available before Christmas. It's been over a week now and we hadn't had any status update until MuscleNerd confirmed the release of an untethered jailbreak to be released before Christmas.

Minutes after tweeting the above info, MuscleNerd deleted this tweet, which is nowhere to be found now. So why did he do this?

iPhone 4.2.1 Untethered Jailbreak Available Soon

Today, MuscleNerd unveiled the video of an iOS 4.2 untethered jailbreak that is currently in the works. This is wonderful news for everyone who wisely held off on upgrading their iPhones to 4.2.1.

If you noticed lately how Cydia mysteriously saves off your 4.2b3 SHSH files, well this exploit utilizes those. Patience is indeed a virtue! Check inside for full video displaying the untethered jailbreak running on an iPod Touch 4g.

The Difference Between a Tethered and Untethered Jailbreak

With the release of the RedSn0w iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak, the notion of tethered jailbreak has been reintroduced and there seems to be a little bit of confusion about what's different between a tethered and untethered jailbreak.

I've seen many comments asking more clarification about what a tethered/untethered jailbreak is, so I thought I'd give you a quick and simple explanation...

Update About the iPhone iOS 4.2 Jailbreak & Unlock

With iOS 4.2 release day right around the corner, there are a few things that you need to be reminded of. Most jailbreak veterans out there probably know this by now, but I'm worried that the jailbreak novices will make mistakes they might regret sooner rather than later.

The Dev Team just posted an update on their blog about what to expect, and most importantly about what to do and what not to do. Here is a quick summary...

More Info About the iOS 4.2 Jailbreak

With the release of iOS 4.2 just around the corner, everyone is wondering when and what kind of jailbreak we'll be getting. Even though LimeRa1n and GreenPois0n can't supposedly be patched without hardware modification, the risk of getting a tethered jailbreak still remains.

Comex brought up a bit of clarification about the iOS 4.2 jailbreak in a series of tweets. There is some good and some bad news...

Geohot Has Another Untethered Exploit Up His Sleeve

A quick post about a tweet that MuscleNerd sent out a few hours ago explaining that Geohot has another untethered exploit up his sleeve but he didn't use it so he can save it up for a future iOS update.

This is pretty good news for all iPhone users as it seems no matter what happens when iOS 4.2 comes out, we'll most likely get a jailbreak pretty quickly. Now if only we could have an unlock...

Dev Team Confirms it Has Untethered Jailbreaks for All Future Firmwares

MuscleNerd confirmed on Twitter earlier today that the Dev Team has figured out a way to use LimeRa1n, GreenPois0n, and PwnageTool for all future firmwares of devices boasting an A4 chip.

Even better, all future jailbreaks for iOS devices with an A4 chip will be untethered. That's a good news for iPhone 4 owners, as well as Apple TV, iPad and iPod Touch 4G users...

Will GreenPois0n Be an Untethered Jailbreak?

What an exciting day! First the news that GreenPois0n will be released on Sunday. Then we learned that GreenPois0n will only work for the iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch 4G, and finally, the news fell that Comex is working on his own jailbreak for iPhone 3GS.

One question about the GreenPoison jailbreak remains... Will it be a tethered jailbreak, or an untethered jailbreak?

I Guess Geohot is Not Working on an Untethered Jailbreak After All

It seems that I missed a tweet by Gehot a few weeks ago in which he made it clear that he was not going to work on an untethered version of BlackRa1n.

I don't know if you remember but Geohot said a few weeks ago that he would give us an untethered jailbreak if he won some kind of contest. Well he lost! And we all lose too!

I don't know how I feel about that. I mean, the kid is completely in his right to not develop an untethered jailbreak. But somehow, I feel like when you have such a great gift as he has, you kinda have a responsibility towards the community.

Again, he's free to do whatever he wants but I think it's very childish to say "I''l give you what you want IF I win this stupid contest" and have us hold our breath. Then of course we're all disappointed when we realize that he lost the contest and he's not going to give us what we want.

One thing is sure: the Dev Team will not let us down. The Dev Team will not play game with us and they will not have us wait and hope in vain. As I said in an article a few weeks ago, I believe the Dev Team is up to something and might very well surprise us.

What do you think about how Geohot is acting?
