iPhone 4 Jailbreak and Unlock Won’t Be Released Today

Despite the high expectation that the iPhone 4 jailbreak and unlock might be released today, MuscleNerd confirmed that it will not. Apparently there are issues with important jailbreak apps such as FaceTime that need to be taken care of before the release. Like MuscleNerd says, there is no point releasing a jailbreak and unlock if it's not stable.

The Dev Team said last week they will release both the jailbreak and unlock for iOS 4 at the same time, so even though ultrasn0w is ready for release, the Team now has to make sure the jailbreak is bug free before making it available to the public.

iPhone 4 Jailbreak and Unlock to Be Released at the Same Time

In a tweet sent today, MuscleNerd confirmed that the iPhone 4 unlock is ready now but it will only be released whenever the Spirit jailbreak is done, debugged and packaged.

A little earlier, PlanetBeing had sent a similar tweet stating that "we're gonna be able to give you an unlock with the jailbreak".

At this point, there is no doubt all the Dev Team is waiting for is Comex to finish up the work on Spirit, which release should be imminent.

There's been a lot of waiting for the jailbreak and unlock but it seems there is light at the end of the tunnel. The Dev Team obviously doesn't make us wait on purpose. They simply want to make sure the finished product will be bug free and stable.

Go Dev Team!

MuscleNerd Unlocks the iPhone 4

Just a few days after PlanetBeing revealed the first iPhone 4 unlock, MuscleNerd just showed his very own unlock in a tweet sent earlier today.

The two members of the Dev Team have been working on 3 different options to unlock the iPhone 4. PlanetBeing was the first to find one out, and now MuscleNerd got his 2nd and 3rd ideas working.

Now the hardest part of the job is done, they will compare their unlock solutions by taking into account the loading time and the stability of the unlocks. Once MuscleNerd and PlanetBeing agree on the best solution, they will most likely update ultrasn0w.

There would be no point updating ultrasn0w without releasing a jailbreak first, which Comex apparently has had ready for quite a while now. The team has given us any estimated release date but it seems it's now just a matter of days.

Dev Team Warns You Against Fake iPhone Hackers

We know the Dev Team is working hard on the iPhone 4 unlock. They have actually been pretty successful at it, as PlanetBeing was able to demonstrate last week. The problem the Dev Team is now facing is the number of fake iPhone hackers trying to impersonate them on Facebook or Twitter.

Those fakes often give misleading or wrong information. They clearly want to spread bad information, often with download links to malware.

MuscleNerd and the Dev Team made it clear today in a blog post that you should be very careful with what you see or read online. Basically, there are just a few people you can trust: @MuscleNerd, @PlanetBeing, @iPhone_Dev, and @Ultrasn0w.

To make things easier for you, you can simply follow me on Twitter, or just read this blog on a regular basis as I always share the latest news about jailbreaking and unlocking.

I also created a Twitter list of iPhone hackers and developers you can trust. You may follow this list here.

As usual, if you have any question or concern, you can always hit me up on Twitter or simply leave a message in the forums.

Can eFuse Prevent Future iPhone Jailbreaking and Unlocking?

I read an interesting story a few days ago on MobileCrunch about how the Motorola Droid X actually self-destructs if you try to mod it.

I admit the title of the article sounds more scary than it is in reality but it still makes me worry Apple might soon do the same thing as My Droid World describes:

The eFuse is coded with information that it either looks for or is passed to it from the bootloader. The bootloader is loaded with information it looks for when it begins the boot-up process. [...]

Once the the eFuse verifies that the information it is looking for or that has been passed through to it by the bootloader is correct then the boot process continues. [...]

If the eFuse failes to verify this information then the eFuse receives a command to "blow the fuse" or "trip the fuse". This results in the booting process becoming corrupted and resulting in a permanent bricking of the Phone.

A hardware fix is needed to get the phone back on once the eFuse has been activated.

I wonder if Apple will implement this at some point in the future. We know Apple is against jailbreaking and unlocking so that might be a way to put an end to it all... at least until some smart hackers figure out a way to bypass this.

How to Unlock the iPhone 3G iOS 4.0.1 with UltraSn0w

The latest firmware update that brought us iOS 4.0.1 did not update the baseband which remains at version 05.13.04. This means that if you have an iPhone 3G, you can jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 and unlock your it with UltraSn0w.

Step 1: You will have to jailbreak your iPhone 3G iOS 4.0.1 first.

Step 2: Then simply add this source to Cydia: http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com. More details here.

Step 3: Finally, search for "UltraSn0w" in Cydia and install the application. Reboot your iPhone, and you're done. You can now use your iPhone on a different carrier.

There is no iOS 4 jailbreak for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 yet but I guess it's just a matter of time now.

Reminder: Do Not Update Your iPhone or iPad If You’re Planning to Jailbreak/Unlock

As many of you may already know, Apple just released iOS 4.0.1, a software update for the iPhone that will supposedly fix the antenna issue. Apple also released iOS 3.2.1 for iPad, which fixes a few bugs.

If you are currently or plan to be on a jailbroken iPhone or iPad and want to keep your jailbreak, make sure you do not update until further notice. Hopefully, it won't be too long until the Dev Team releases a jailbreak for the latest firmware.

While updating your device to the lastest iOS is not a dramatic error, it might prevent you from jailbreaking it in the future. This particularly applies to anyone who relies on an unlock.

My advice to you: don't update, sit back, wait, and check back here later for up-to-date jailbreak information.

If you do not care about jailbreaking or unlocking your iPhone, then you can obviously update your device without any worry.

PlanetBeing Demos the iPhone 4 Unlock

I told you this morning about PlanetBeing's unlock for the iPhone 4. PlanetBeing put up a video on YouTube explaining the unlock, which is the very first carrier unlock for the iPhone 4 in the world.

According to PlanetBeing, this unlock is still a beta version and needs a lot of cleaning before being potentially released to the public. PlanetBeing also confirmed that MuscleNerd is working on a software unlock as well, and they will decide which of the 2 methods to release when they are ready to.

Looks like I now have an unlocked iPhone 4 :)

These are PlanetBeing's own words, talking about the iPhone 4 unlock on Twitter. The Dev Team has been working on the iOS 4 and more specifically the iPhone 4 unlock for quite a while now and it seems we're not too far from an official release, as we talked about yesterday.

Looking at MuscleNerd's Twitter activity, one can only assume that the famous ultrasn0w iPhone unlock will be updated soon to give access to an iPhone 4 unlock to the masses. However, we need a jailbreak first, and the word going around is that Spirit for iOS 4 will be released as soon as the unlock is ready.

With Apple rumored to push an update to iOS 4, the Dev Team might want to wait a bit before releasing a jailbreak and unlock. We'll see.

iPhone 4 Unlock Ready for Release?

While GeoHot is teasing us with fake jailbreaks for iPhone 4, the Dev Team is hard at work on an i4 unlock, and they seem to get closer.

In a tweet sent out his  morning, Dev Team front man MuscleNerd confirmed that they are one step away from being done with the iPhone 4 unlock:

Full i4 bars with custom "steve" background task spitting out "One more thing" http://is.gd/doJXt  - all pieces in place:)

If I understand this correctly it might mean they just have to package UltraSn0w and put this on Cydia... If that's really what's going on, it also means the release of Spirit for iOS 4 is right around the corner as well.

Stay tuned!

Dev Team is One Step Closer to An iPhone 4 Unlock

MuscleNerd has been teasing us quite a bit lately on Twitter. One of his most recent tweets suggests that although the new baseband OS is giving them a hard time, the Dev Team is indeed one step closer to an iPhone 4 unlock, which requires a complete rewrite of the unlocking tool UltraSn0w.

Now that the Spirit jailbreak is ready and the Dev Team is being this close to finish up the work on the iPhone 4 unlock, we can only imagine (and hope?) that both the jailbreak and unlock will be released in a few weeks when Apple ships an update to iOS 4 in order to fix the antenna issue.

Yes, the Dev Team is Still Working on an iPhone 4 Unlock

For those of you wondering, yes, the Dev Team is still working on an iPhone 4 unlock. These 2 tweets from MuscleNerd and PlanetBeing just confirmed that they are actively working on the unlock, which doesn't seem to be an easy task.

Even though Apple has been working hard on patching the holes, it's good to see that PlanetBeing has a whole "bag of tricks".

There is no ETA for an iPhone 4 unlock, or even a jailbreak, which seems to be the priority.
