Update About the iPhone iOS 4.2 Jailbreak & Unlock

With iOS 4.2 release day right around the corner, there are a few things that you need to be reminded of. Most jailbreak veterans out there probably know this by now, but I'm worried that the jailbreak novices will make mistakes they might regret sooner rather than later.

The Dev Team just posted an update on their blog about what to expect, and most importantly about what to do and what not to do. Here is a quick summary...

iPhone Unlock for iOS 4.1 and 4.2 Coming Soon?

Here is an interesting tweet from MuscleNerd saying that "a very nice unlock" is coming soon. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the Dev Team already has an unlock ready for release but they're just waiting for Apple to ship iOS 4.2, sometimes in the next few days.

I assume this unlock will work for every device and will be compatible with iOS 4.1 and 4.2 basebands...

PwnageTool 4.1.1 is Out to Fix Mac OS X 10.5 Issues

Couple of days back, PwnageTool 4.1 for Mac was released to jailbreak the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV on iOS 4.1. Some Mac OS X 10.5.x users were experiencing issues with this version so the iPhone Dev Team today released PwnageTool 4.1.1 to fix any issues on Mac OS X 10.5.x.

PwnageTool works only on Mac OS X and it's a jailbreak tool based on creating pre-jailbroken custom firmwares while preserving your baseband to be able to unlock your iPhone after upgrading using the custom firmware.

You can download PwnageTool and check our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your device using PwnageTool for Mac then follow this guide to unlock iOS 4.1 using Ultrasn0w and tell us how it worked for you!

UPDATE: Version 4.1.2 is out. You can get it from our iPhone download sections.

How to Update Your iPhone to iOS 4.1 and Make Sure You Can Unlock with UltraSn0w

Technically, it's not possible to unlock an iPhone that has been updated to iOS 4.1 because there is no unlock available for the iOS 4.1 baseband. Now depending on your situation, there might be a way to unlock your iPhone.

If you are still on iOS 4.0.1 (or even earlier version. ie 3.1.3), then you can use PwnageTool to jailbreak your iPhone while preserving the baseband (see our guide here). This will make sure you update to the latest iOS version but don't update the baseband, which is the key part in unlocking your iPhone...

How to Know if You Can Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone

I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 4.0.2 and baseband 01.59.00. Can I jailbreak? Can I unlock? I get asked this question about 20 times a day and to be honest with you, it's kinda getting old.

The good news is there is a tool available that will answer these specific questions. Just enter your device, model, iOS, and baseband version and it will tell you if you can jailbreak and unlock. Additionally, it will give you links to tools you can use to jailbreak and unlock...

PwnageTool Jailbreak for iOS 4.1 Coming this Sunday

MuscleNerd announced on Twitter earlier today that the Dev Team will be releasing an updated version of PwnageTool to jailbreak iOS 4.1. Not only this version will work with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, but it will also allow to jailbreak the new Apple TV.

PwnageTool is a Mac only tool that allows you to update the firmware while preserving the baseband. It is necessary for those of you who want to be on the latest iOS, while keeping their iPhone unlock. If you're on a PC and want to update to iOS 4.1 while not upgrading the baseband, you may refer to our tutorial...

How to Update Your iPhone to iOS 4.1 Without Updating the Baseband

This step by step guide/tutorial will show you how to update your iPhone 4 to iOS 4.1 while preserving the baseband. Because we will not update the baseband, you will still be able to run the latest iOS version available, you will be able to jailbreak using LimeRa1n, and you will be able to unlock your iPhone using UltraSn0w.

This method works for both Windows and Mac. It is pretty simple but it does require you to read the steps carefully. As usual when hacking your iPhone, you are proceeding at your own risks. This being said, this is how to upgrade to iOS 4.1 without upgrading the baseband...

LimeSn0w Unlock by Geohot on its Way?

Just days after releasing his LimeRa1n jailbreak, is Geohot going to amaze us all over again with LimeSn0w, the first iPhone unlock for iOS 4.1? That's at least what this image I received from an anonymous tipster suggests. It shows what seems to be an iPhone 3GS on T-Mobile with information about LimeSn0w being an unlock for basebands 02.10.04 and 05.15.01.

While we thought there wouldn't be an unlock until iOS 4.2 comes out, this LimeSn0w rumor comes as a very good news, especially for those of you who accidentally updated to iOS 4.1 and cannot downgrade the baseband.

Bad News: There Won’t Be an iOS 4.1 Unlock

We just gave you the bad news that there won't be an iPhone 3GS iOS 4.1 jailbreak, and unfortunately, we have more bad news, especially for unlockers. According to iPhone hacker Veence, there will not be an unlock for any baseband on iOS 4.1.

So why is that? I've got my ideas...

Important Note About the iPhone iOS 4.1 Unlock

Looking to unlock your iPhone running iOS 4.1? We've got some good news and some bad news for you... Let's start with the bad news, shall we?

The bad news is that if you've already updated your iPhone to iOS 4.1, you will not be able to unlock it, at least for the time being. MuscleNerd confirmed that UltraSn0w will not work on any iOS 4.1 baseband and that you cannot downgrade to a previous version.

And now for the good news...

How to Update Your iPhone to iOS 4.1 Without Updating the Baseband

iOS 4.1 came out a couple days ago, and with it came a new baseband update, going from version 01.59.00 to 02.10.04. The baseband is a critical part of the iPhone unlock and UltraSn0w isn't currently compatible with baseband 02.10.04.

Many people are eager to update to iOS 4.1 and try the new features that come with it. Obviously if you rely on a jailbreak/unlock, you should hold on to it. If you don't care about unlocking options at the time but you think you might in the near future, then updating to iOS 4.1 while preserving your baseband is your best bet...
