Apple stops signing iOS 12.1.1 beta 3, halting downgrades to a jailbreakable firmware

In an unfortunate turn of events this week, Apple appears to have stopped signing iOS 12.1.1 beta 3 for most or all iOS devices. Before last night, this was the last jailbreakable firmware that could still be downgraded to via iTunes since Apple closed the signing window for the official iOS 12.1.1-12.1.2 releases exactly one month ago.

Hacker an unc0ver lead developer Pwn20wnd confirmed the unsigning status via Twitter in the wee hours of the night, shortly following up with reports saying that it was still being signed by Apple for certain devices. As expected, a couple of high-profile individuals such as rootlessJB 3.0 developer Jake James and OsirisJailbreak12 creator GeoSn0w confirmed that the firmware wasn’t being signed for their devices:

Renowned jailbreak tweak developer Ryan Petrich hasn’t been as active in the jailbreak community as he once was, but the unc0ver jailbreak for iOS 12 seems to have awakened the dormant beast.

Just yesterday, hacker and unc0ver lead developer Pwn20wnd dropped a significant update for the unc0ver v3.0.0 pre-release, one that added support for 4K devices and made the iOS 12-centric jailbreak tool fully-compatible with all pre-A12 devices for the first time.

But one must wonder when Pwn20wnd finds time to sleep, as the hacker seemingly released another update for the unc0ver v3.0.0 pre-release in the middle of the night, bringing the tool up to beta version 41.

As promised, hacker and unc0ver lead developer Pwn20wnd has released the 40th beta of the unc0ver v3.0.0 pre-release for public testing Monday afternoon with support for all pre-A12(X) devices running iOS 12.0-12.1.2.

Pwn20wnd announced the revision via Twitter just a few minutes ago, adding that it bundles Cydia and an updated version of Cydia Substrate for all supported devices:

Good news for those of you waiting for an iOS 12 jailbreak on any 4K devices – hacker and unc0ver lead developer Pwn20wnd announced Monday morning that an update would be coming to the unc0ver jailbreak tool very soon.

In a Tweet shared by Pwn20wnd just this morning, we learn that Saurik has updated Cydia Substrate to resolve a bug that prevented full 4K device support initially, and we can also gather that unc0ver co-developer Sam Bingner has pushed important updates to many of the jailbreak’s dependencies that will make full 4K support possible:

PsychoTea’s new machswap kernel exploit for A7-A11 devices running iOS 11.0-12.1.2 has been recognized as a seriously fast and reliable exploit for modern jailbreak tools. In fact, it’s much smoother than some of those that are already being used, such as v3ntex by tihmstar.

A Tweet shared over the weekend by hacker and unc0ver lead developer Pwn20wnd appears to praise the machswap exploit, and furthermore reveals that the hacker is actively implementing it into the unc0ver jailbreak tool:

In case you missed it, renowned hacker PsychoTea released a noteworthy kernel exploit called machswap for A7-A9 devices running iOS 11.0-12.1.2 on Friday. But rather than slamming on the brakes at the realization of his new exploit, the hacker instead went for the accelerator pedal; consequently, we now have a new and improved exploit that seems viable for jailbreaking.

In a Tweet shared just this weekend, we learn that the machswap exploit has picked up official support for A10-A11 devices in addition to those A7-A9 devices that were previously supported. That said, the machswap exploit is now viable for most devices that can run iOS 12:

There’ve been so many kernel exploit releases for the iOS platform as of late that our heads are still spinning, but that’s pleasant news if you’re a jailbreak aficionado, because it gives our respected jailbreak tool developers more resources to work with.

The latest kernel exploit reportedly comes by way of hacker PsychoTea, and it has been named machswap. The exploit appears to be viable on all A7-A9 devices running iOS 11.0-12.1.2, which could make it a worthwhile candidate for modern jailbreak tools such as Electra or unc0ver.
