Time names the iPhone 5 ‘Gadget of the Year’

The year is winding down, and like clockwork, TIME Magazine has released its annual collection of 55 lists showcasing the best and the worst of the past 12 months. And as you've probably already gleaned from the title, the publication has named the iPhone 5 its 'Gadget of the Year.'

Apple's handset beat out several rival products from Samsung and Microsoft, including the Note II and the Surface tablet, as well as Nintendo's new Wii U gaming console. In fact, author Harry McCracken says that it's is one of the most artfully polished gadgets anyone’s ever built...

Steve Jobs named in Time’s 20 most influential Americans list

TIME magazine just published its list of the 20 most influential Americans of all time. Among those listed are folks like George Washington, Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, and yes, Steve Jobs.

The magazine calls Jobs the "high priest of the computer age," and gives a brief rundown of his life and accomplishments, including his time at Disney, and his unprecedented revival of Apple...

This jailbreak tweak lets you tell time using vibrations

Many people will think this tweak is completely devoid of usefulness, and to an extent I agree, but you have to admit that the idea and execution is original, and well done.

VibeTime is a jailbreak tweak available on Cydia, that allows you to tell the current time using vibrations. That means that it's totally within the realm of possibilities to tell the time without pulling your phone out of your pocket.

Sure, not many will find a real world use for this, but the idea and execution is pretty interesting...

Here we go again: iOS users struggling with DST switchover

If you live in a part of the world which required a change to the clocks this weekend, then it may be worth checking all is well with your iOS devices because, according to isolated reports, some are once again struggling to behave as expected during the switchover.

We've been here plenty of times before, so we really shouldn't be surprised. Even so, Apple's inability to make something so simple work reliably is something we just can't help but marvel at.

They can cram more pixels into a 10-inch tablet than we care to count, but ask Apple to make a phone do something that computers have been doing for years and it apparently gets stumped...

Add Seconds to Your Status Bar With StatusBarSeconds

I can honestly say that I think there's a tweak for absolutely everyone on Cydia. Case in point: StatusBarSeconds, a new jailbreak tweak that allows you to add seconds to your iDevice's status bar.

Who needs something like that? Someone, apparently. Check inside for a video walkthrough of StatusBarSeconds in action...

TimerBar: Access Your iPhone’s Timer or Stopwatch From Anywhere

I find myself using my iPhone's Clock app, with its included timer and stopwatch, for all sorts of arbitrary reasons.

It's a really handy thing to have, but it would even better if you didn't have to launch the Clock app every time, just to access the time keeping functions.

Enter TimerBar, a jailbreak tweak that allows you to invoke your timer from anywhere by means of Activator. Full video walkthrough, inside...

LockSecondsIndicator: Add Seconds to Your Lockscreen

LockSecondsIndicator isn't the first tweak that adds seconds to your lockscreen clock, but it just might be the best.

A while back, I reviewed a similar tweak entitled ClockSeconds. That tweak attempted to do something similar, but it had its fair share of issues.

Does LockSecondsIndicator fair any better? Look inside for the video evidence...

How Much Time a Day Do You Spend on Your iPhone?

The title says it all folks. One recent night, I was about to plug-in my iPhone 4, and I did my usual check of battery life before the USB went in. For the day, I had spent about 7 hours on my favorite toy. Sure this included some iPod time in the car, and of course the research "work" I must do for my role here at iDB. However it seemed like an awful lot of my time eaten up by my "phone". Of course this is what Apple likes to hear, and I know I'm kind of enthralled by the device, but how does this compare?

My use has certainly gone up from that of my 3GS, however the experience is more enjoyable. I can't be the only one who gets "lost" in his Retina Display. My use of camera/photo apps has seen the biggest hike, largely due to the screen and camera combo. Is this the trend, or am I that big of a geek?

What does your usage entail, and how many hours per day does your settings app reveal to you? I'm not so much interested in battery life as I am in where your battery life goes. So step up, and let us know in the comments what is you do on that iPhone of yours, and for how long each typical day. Now, back to mine I go.
