Would you buy a carrier-subsidized iPad?

In the midst of all of the talk regarding Apple releasing a smaller iPad to reach out to budget shoppers, one analyst has another idea on how the company could lower the slate's cost to infiltrate the budget tablet market. Carrier subsidies.

Analyst A.I. Houriani, of Seeking Alpha, believes that Apple could sell a lot more iPads if it could convince carriers to absorb some of the tablet's up front costs in exchange for multi-year contracts — similar to what they do with iPhones...

Confirmed: Sprint to keep unlimited data, whether or not iPhone 5 is LTE

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has finally addressed concerns that the carrier might drop its unlimited data plans for an upcoming sixth-generation iPhone. Speaking to CNET's Roger Cheng, Hesse said his company has little interest in changing unlimited data plans by the time the next iPhone hits the market later this year, whether or not it is LTE capable.

Sprint is the only major United States wireless operator still offering an all-you-can-eat data plans to smartphone customers. This, as Hesse often puts it, remains the carrier's "distinctive differentiator"...

Sprint activates 1.5M iPhones in Q1, but posts $863M net loss

Just as Apple posted its massive earnings, Sprint Nextel, the third largest wireless telecommunications network in the United States, behind Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility, published on Wednesday their first-quarter earnings ahead of the bell.

The carrier activated 1.5 million iPhones in the quarter and 44 percent were to new customers, amounting to 660,000 new iPhone subscribers. That wasn't enough to save the day as the carrier reported a substantial $863 million net loss and operating loss of $255 million.

They lost $0.29 per share on wireless service revenues of $7.2 billion, a seven percent increase year-over-year. The carrier added 263,000 net prepaid subscribers under the Sprint brand - each spending an average of $4.03 more than last year.

Without the iPhone, Sprint would have actually lost 400,000 customers. The carrier's ARPU was $59.88, a new record. The company added 1.1 million new subscribers during the quarter and it now commands 56 million subscribers in total...

Sprint confirms unlimited LTE data ahead of 4G LTE iPhone

Excluding some regional carriers such as nTelos (which begins carrying the iPhone on April 20), Sprint remains the only major wireless carrier in the United States with an unlimited everything plan. Unlike others, Sprint's iPhone customers are enjoying unlimited data. Not surprisingly, the carrier would love to retain this key differentiator as it's prepping to finally roll out 4G LTE.

According to a new report, a Sprint spokesperson has now confirmed that the carrier is planning on offering unlimited data when their 4G LTE network goes live. 4G LTE support is all but given for the upcoming sixth-generation iPhone. Even with Sprint being terribly late with 4G LTE deployment, this is still good news for future iPhone customers.

The speed increase offered by 4G LTE technology over 3G HSPA+ is substantial. And if the new 4G iPad is anything to go by, unlimited data could sway those prospective data-hungry customers.

AT&T and Sprint sell more iPhones than all other smartphones combined

Earlier today we told you that the iPhone 4S has been the top-selling smartphone for all three of Apple's US carrier partners for the last 6 months. The information came from a Canaccord Genuity investor note that was sent out to shareholders this morning.

Now, AllThingsD is pointing to another part of the report that also provides some interesting data. Not only is Apple's handset the top-selling smartphone here in the US, but some carriers are actually selling more iPhones than all other smartphones combined...

Sprint says its network will be eligible for LTE iPhone

Even though Sprint became an official iPhone partner last fall, Apple snubbed the carrier earlier this month when it launched its new 4G-capable iPad to the masses. The tablet has been a staggering hit, breaking a number of various sales records.

There's also been some speculation that Sprint will be left out of Apple's LTE party again this fall — assuming the next iPhone features the tech — due to its lack of LTE coverage. But the Kansas-based operator doesn't seem to be too concerned...

Sprint chief: iPhone folks use less data, are more profitable

For all the talk about iPhone users being network hogs due to their data-hungry nature, the reality is that Apple's phone is still stuck in the slower 3G lane while the majority of high-end Android handsets boast 4G LTE networking.

As we learned this morning, 4G LTE support on the new iPad has some not-so-obvious downsides to it as some folks are blowing past their monthly allowance in a matter of days due to high-definition content downloads and streaming on the go.

But the iPhone is different, says Sprint CEO Dan Hesse. The executive said in a video interview with GSMA’s MobileWorld Live blog that iPhone users aren't as data-hungry as their Android counterparts and thus are more profitable.

His company is "pulling a lot of customers" from rival AT&T and Verizon Wireless, he said, noting that four out of every ten iPhone sales in the holiday quarter went to new customers. He also defended that costly iPhone deal...

Sprint reportedly readying Total Equipment Protection coverage for iPhone

Sprint, the third largest wireless provider in the United States, is reportedly in the process of readying its own warranty plan that should offer extended coverage to their iPhone customers, if a rumor published by SprintFeed is anything to go by.

The publication stopped short of saying whether Sprint's Total Equipment Protection coverage for the iPhone is anything like Apple's own AppleCare+ extended coverage that allows for two accidental damage repairs with a $49 service in exchange for a one-time payment of $99.

Just like AppleCare+, Sprint's Total Equipment Protection coverage reportedly will have to be purchased within a 30-day window. Sprint's regular Total Equipment Protection warranty covers both mechanical and accidental damage, loss or theft for a monthly payment of eight bucks. This translates to $96 a year or as much as $192 if matching a two-year span offered by the AppleCare+ coverage...

Sprint bankruptcy a legitimate risk as Apple jumps on the LTE bandwagon

Sprint's stock fell 4% yesterday as investors reacted to a report that the risk of the carrier going bankrupt was increasing. Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett downgraded Sprint shares from "market-perform" to "underperform" based on the news.

While the company, which happens to be the third largest wireless provider in the US, has had a long string of poor quarters over the past few years, analysts had high hopes for the carrier after it finally became an iPhone partner late last fall...

Sprint commits to buying 24 million iPhones from Apple

Sprint is the most recent carrier to have gained Apple's iPhone on its network, after paying big bucks. According to its 10-K filing with the SEC released this morning, Sprint has committed to buying almost $15.5B worth of iPhones from Apple, The Next Web points out.

Asymco figured that each iPhone is sold for roughly $630 ARPU from Apple to Sprint. This means, Sprint has committed to buying almost 24 million iPhones...
