JailbreakMe 3.0 Conflicting with BiteSMS

A couple of days ago we reported that the iPad Camera Connection Kit stopped working after using JailbreakMe 3.0. It looks like another issue has reared its ugly head which looks to affect jailbroken devices on a wider scale.

Reports are surfacing that the popular jailbreak tweak BiteSMS is conflicting with JailbreakMe 3.0. Confirmed on the BiteSMS forums, that sending a text message through BiteSMS' quick reply feature will crash your device and send it into an infinite boot loop. The only solution to remedy this as of writing is to restore your iDevice...

How to Backup and Restore SMS Messages Using PKGBackup [Video Tutorial]

One of the most frustrating things that I've encountered with the iPhone, is doing backups and restores. Now admittedly, most people are okay with this, they just backup their iPhone with iTunes and restore with whenever necessary.

I like to take the backup and restore process a bit more seriously. For instance, I've actually created a starting point "stock" iTunes backup with all of my favorite apps, settings, mail accounts, etc.

Secondly, I have a separate backup for all of my jailbreak apps, tweaks, and settings. For this, I use PKGBackup.

I've found that the combination of the iTunes backup coupled with PKGBackup makes for a quick, and painless restore back to my favorite settings.

There's one problem with this methodology though; it doesn't backup all of my SMS messages...

SMSEnhancer Adds Photos and Timestamps to Messages App

The stock Messages app in iOS is so boring. Everything is the same color and font, and there's no option for contact photos or custom avatars. Sure there are utilities in Cydia that allow you to skin the SMS app, but they tend to make your phone feel sluggish.

If you' want to spruce up your Messages app, without dealing with Winterboard or themes, you may want to check out SMSEnhancer. This new jailbreak tweak adds contact photos and time stamps to your otherwise dull conversation screen...

‘SMSHideKeyboard’ Gives You More Room to View Your SMS History

One of the new features in iOS 5 is the ability to hide your keyboard when viewing your SMS history in the iMessage app.

It didn't take long, but there is now a jailbreak tweak available that mimics said functionality, and even allows you to hide the input box as well.

For longtime biteSMS users, this won't be new to you, but if you've been hanging onto that old outdated Messages app, this is a must have tweak to add to your collection.

Check inside for the video details surrounding SMSHideKeyboard...

Censor Your SMS Messages With ‘SMS Censor’

SMS Censor is a new jailbreak tweak that allows you to censor certain words when using your iPhone's default Messages app.

Its purpose is to prevent messages from being sent altogether if it detects a censored string residing in the body of your text message.

I'm not exactly sure who would want to use this, or how it would be used, but I'd imagine it would be a scenario where a parent is censoring or monitoring their child's text messaging habits.

Unfortunately, if the child is smart enough to jailbreak the device in the first place, they're definitely smart enough to find one of the many ways to work around a restriction such as this...

‘PrivateSMS’ Hides Your SMS Messages From Prying Eyes

PrivateSMS is a new TweakWeek jailbreak tweak for the iPhone that sets out to hide your personal SMS messages from view.

The only issue is that if the person who's trying to read your SMS messages really wants to read them, it's not too hard to figure out how to do so.

PrivateSMS makes it so that it appears that you have no SMS messages in your inbox, but with just a couple of taps, all of your messages are instantly viewable.

This fact alone eliminates PrivateSMS from candidacy when it comes to genuinely securing your SMS messages, but it might be the first line of defense that you've been looking for...

Apple Didn’t Tell Carriers About iMessage, Watch Out SMS?

Apple's wireless carrier partners were apparently just as surprised as we were when Apple unveiled its new messaging client, iMessage, at yesterday's WWDC keynote. Reportedly, Apple didn't bother to give carriers a heads up that they were introducing a new, media-rich messaging client before the actual presentation to the public.

Wireless carriers are the ones that will actually be handling the transfer of messages/photos/videos in iMessage over 3G. Apple demonstrated its classic attitude by not even bothering to give carriers a heads up about iMessage. What Apple wants, Apple gets.

New App Lets You Add a Signature to Your Text Messages

SMS Signature is a new application available for jailbroken iPhones that will allow you to, as you probably figured out, add a custom signature to text messages sent from your iPhone.

After downloading the application from Cydia, you can use the Settings app to configure SMS Signature. From there, you can create and activate a custom text signature. From now on, every time you send a text message, the signature will automatically be appended to it...

iQuickCall Allows You to Quickly Call, Text, or E-Mail with Activator

iQuickCall is a jailbreak tweak that allows you quick access to the number you call everyday. Using the gesture options built into Activator, iQuickCall gives you several methods for quickly prompting the option to call/text/e-mail someone from anywhere on your screen.

There are apps in the App Store that try to solve the issue of quick contact reference in iOS, but iQuickCall uses the system access benefits that jailbreaking provides for a more integrated approach...

AutoResponder Will Automatically Respond to Your Text Messages

AutoResponder is a Cydia tweak that automatically replies to incoming SMS messages. If you're in a situation where you can't immediately respond to a text, AutoResponder can reply for you with a list of preset messages you assign.

If you're the kind of person that doesn't like to leave your friends hung out to dry, AutoResponder is great for notifying someone that you're busy or unavailable...

Messages App Updated in iOS 4.3, Shorter Tones and More Options

In addition to the much-awaited Personal Hotspot feature for AT&T iPhone 4 owners, Apple also updated the Messages app in iOS 4.3.

Although there are no changes to the app itself per say, Apple has updated the alert options. This includes significantly shorter SMS (text) ringtones, clearer text ringtone sounds from the speaker, and the settings for the Messages app now allow you to have alert tones repeat up to ten times at two minute intervals.

Use the iPhone to Drive Your Co-Workers Insane

Picture the scenario: Somebody with the default iPhone ringtone gets a phone call in a room full of other iPhone users. Everyone instantly reaches into their pocket and awkwardly looks around the room wondering who's iPhone is actually going off.

We've all been there.

If you feel like pulling a good prank, there's a website that replicates the iPhone's default sounds.
