iOS 8 enables third-party Share Extensions, makes Share sheets customizable

Being a heavy user of Share sheets in iOS 7, I've always felt that something needed to be done about the growing number of icons cluttering these menus, especially given third-party apps are allowed to add additional 'Open In' choices to Share sheets.

As part of its extensibility mantra, Apple has said that third-party apps are now finally allowed to install their own hooks to the multipurpose iOS 8 Share menus, making it a lot easier to add new sharing functionality system-wide.

But as installing these extensions is bound to quickly populate Share sheets, iOS 8 allows you to easily arrange Share sheet icons and even tell the operating system which extensions are available through Share sheets...

Facebook updates Messenger with video sharing, improved search and more

Social networking giant Facebook today has refreshed its iOS Messenger application, redesigned from the ground up last November, with a few new features you should know about.

The biggest news in Facebook Messenger 5.0, available free for the iPhone, is its newly added ability to exchange video messages from your library with other Messenger users. Previously, you could only share photos and short voice recordings using the app.

Study finds users more likely to share web content via iPhone versus other devices

Social media marketing company ShareThis has just posted data from a recent study of social behavior across multiple platforms. The study, which compared billions of social actions across desktop and mobile web, set out to determine which devices see the most social sharing.

And surprise, the data shows that the mobile web is more social than the desktop web, and among mobile devices, the iPhone is king. The firm found that iPhone users are three times more likely to share links than on a desktop, and 1.5 times more likely to do so versus other mobile devices...

Vine adds protected posts, revamped camera, channels, revining and more

If you care about sending quick clips up to six seconds long via Twitter-owned Vine for iPhone, you should pause for a second and take a look at today's Vine update which brings a few major enhancements. Most notably, Vine 1.3 enhances your privacy by introducing protected posts.

Protecting a post will make it unavailable to the web at large so only the people you approve to follow you can see them (you can also protect your entire account.

Twitter teases upcoming Vine features ahead of Instagram Video launch

Coincidentally or not, Twitter has just teased the upcoming Vine features just as the blogosphere lit up with a confirmation that Facebook will be releasing an Instagram video product on Thursday.

Facebook last week sent out invitations for its June 20 press event snail mail style, down to clean white envelopes. The graphics alludes the social networking giant has been working on "big ideas" and today TechCrunch chimes in to claim knowledge of the event's agenda.

What Facebook apparently has in store is a video sharing feature for the Instagram generation.
