With third-party instant messaging apps, Apple's own iMessage, and VoIP services becoming more prevalent, it is to be expected that at some point mobile networks will see a reduction in revenue as people move away from using SMS and voice calling.

What we didn't really expect is the move to start happening so soon. But according to one report, carriers are already feeling the pinch.

Research carried out by infrastructure solutions provider Mavenir Systems on behalf of mobileSQUARED suggests that carriers are already finding that third-party solutions are beginning to impact their business, and it's only going to get worse for the bottom line...

Schools Expect to Use More iPads Than Computers Within Five Years

Apple's iPad is beginning to take over from computers as the key electronic learning device in schools, according to a new survey by Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster.

The survey of 25 schools and their technology directors found that all of them were making use of Apple's iPad while, just as interestingly, none of them were using an Android-powered tablet.

In fact, iPads are becoming so popular that many technology directors believe that there will soon be more iPads per student than computers...

Apple's iOS platform rules the roost in the enterprise, according to new figures released by Good Technology.

The firm, which offers push e-mail, mobile device management, and security products for mobile phones, released the numbers that appear to show both the iPhone and iPad dominating device usage in the enterprise market.

According to Good Technology, the results show a "clear preference for Apple products," with the figures seemingly proving their point conclusively...

iPhone owners are the most loyal smartphone users around, according to a new survey by UBS Research. Apple's iPhone boasts a 89% retention rate, indicating that nearly 9 out 10 iPhone owners will never buy another brand of smartphone.

Surprisingly, the company with the second highest retention rate is actually HTC, with 39% of its customers sticking around for the long haul. Apple claims a 50% retention rate lead over all other smartphone makers in terms of customer loyalty...

UK firm iBingo has questioned just 2,000 iPhone owners about their working habits, and in particular, how much gaming they do during working hours. Turns out, they all 'fessed up to playing games on their iPhones for around one hour a day. From there, iBingo took the numbers and ran with them, and have since made some bold claims based on those 2,000 users...

Android App Downloads Could Outpace the App Store Eventually

Could Android app downloads soon outpace those of iOS apps from the App Store? According to research done by Ovum research (via CNET), all outlets currently offering Android apps will serve up approximately 8.1 billion downloads this year alone. This is opposed to an estimated 6 billion in the App Store.

It's important to keep in mind, however, that the sheer number of app downloads doesn't necessarily translate to a healthy or profitable ecosystem...
