This is inevitable: the iPhone, 5 years into the future

I love my iPhone for what it does and even more so for what it might be capable of doing the next year and the year after - and beyond. Heck, a whole cottage industry of mockups and concept renders has sprung up around forthcoming iPhones.

If you ask Aatma Studios, a future iPhone will have a holographic keyboard (Fox News shamefully thought the concept was real!). Another guy, a student, dreamt up a Vibrative Virtual Keyboard that lets you “type” on flat surfaces. Taking their design cues, YouTube user "FranSnk3d" last week posted this nice clip.

I know it is too easily admissible, but so would had been the original iPhone if someone had laid out the concept for you years prior to the January 2007 introduction. Let's also not forget pico projection is here and that holographs have come quite a long way.

Indeed, who's to say this won't be a future iPhone five or so years from today?

Check out this cool Lockscreen concept

As successful as iOS has been, and continues to be, for Apple, there's no question that it's getting a bit long in the tooth. After all, a majority of the operating system looks just like it did when the iPhone first debuted back in 2007.

And that's why we see so many concepts for iOS. Because there's several ways Apple could improve its mobile platform, from smarter notifications, to broader widgets. And that's proven once again with this new Lockscreen design...

Check out this concept for a more useful iOS app switcher

Since Apple introduced multitasking in iOS 4, the app switcher has remained relatively the same. The jailbreak community, of course, has found dozens of uses for the pop-up app menu, but Apple, for the most part, has left it untouched.

With that in mind, you can understand why mockups that offer a new take on the app switcher create so much commotion. And such is the case with a concept that recently surfaced called "Rethinking the App Switcher for the iPhone 5..."

Nice close ups of iPad mini dummies

In between writing today's report of a "slicker-than-the-iPad-3" iPad mini and conceiving a poll about the perceived value of a non-Retina iPad mini, I've stumbled upon a new set of high-quality photographs showing a familiar looking iPad mini mockup next to the regular 9.7-inch iPad. Presumably, the snaps represent one of the iPad mini dummies floating around in Asia rather than the real deal, but nonetheless they offer a good comparison between the smaller iPad and its bigger sibling, in detail not seen before. Jump past the break for the full gallery...

Here are some gorgeous iPad mini mockups

Now that the iPhone 5 launch has come and gone, the rumor mill's attention has turned to the iPad mini. Apple is widely expected to unveil a smaller version of its popular tablet sometime within the next month.

There's been a lot of talk over what the slate will look like, with the most recent chatter stemming from a leaked black rear shell that reportedly belongs to the tablet. And as usual, this has inspired some mockups...

Size comparison of mini iPad dummy versus real Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD hardware

With the iPad mini presser all but confirmed (think October 17) and today's report that Foxconn is now assembling the device at its new facilities in Brazil, a set of handy new images surfaced that help compare the rumored 7.85-inch iPad mini to Amazon's and Google's tablets, with size and form factor in mind.

If a series of side-by-side comparison shots depicting how an unreleased device stacks up against real tablets is to be trusted, the iPad mini should be slightly wider than Google's and a tad taller than Amazon's...

Another mini iPad mockup, pictured next to a 15-inch MacBook Pro

There has been an unusual shortage of rumors about a mini iPad, especially given a recent reliable assertion calling for an October launch. Macotakara, a Japanese blog with a fairly accurate track record, has gotten hold of another mockup of the iPad mini, molded according to the rumor-mill and pictured sitting next to a 15-inch MacBook Pro, giving us a feel of its size relative to Apple's notebook...

Mini iPad dummy caught on video

Remember photos of an alleged iPad mini dummy unit from yesterday? Gizchina has gotten its hands on one of the units floating around in Asia, presumably made according to guesstimates by case vendors concerning the device's purportedly smaller design. A video the site produced gives us a better understanding of what the alleged device may look like, though we couldn't vouch for its authenticity. Also note that case vendors quite often get it wrong (remember a teardrop-shaped iPhone from last year) so take this clip with a few grains of salt...

Photos of alleged iPad mini dummy unit

Now that the iPhone 5 announcement has come and gone, the rumor mill has turned its sights back to the iPad mini. Yesterday, we heard the tablet is already in mass production. And today, this.

There's a new set of photos floating around the web this morning of a purported iPad mini dummy unit. And the non-working model is believed to be indicative of what the tablet will look like...

Check out this blow-away concept of next-gen iPod touch

With just one day left until Apple's massive iPhone 5 introduction tomorrow, it's a mockups day today. This morning already saw us post a few nice dummies and mockups, from the iPhone 5 dummy with high-quality closeups of the handset's controversial two-tone design to a concept video showing off its possible features to this nicely done mockup of a mini iPad in hand.

With some people expecting new colorful iPods at tomorrow's event, designer Guilherme Schasiepen went about rendering half a dozen stunning mockups of what a fifth-generation iPod touch might look like. The renderings and more food for thought follow right below...

Nicely done mini iPad dummy in hand

As an avid reader of this blog, you must have read all there is about purported iPad mini cases, the device's rumored shrunken down shell and other leaked parts. You've also seen mockups depicting its skinner side bezels and thin design and marveled at the nicely done interactive three-dimensional model.

All of the above, of course, is based on what the rumor-mill thinks it knows so far about Apple's purportedly inexpensive, smaller iPad. It was only a matter of time before someone envisioned what an iPad mini held in your hand would look like, right as we're approaching its rumored October launch...

Concept video shows off possible iPhone 5 design and features

We're just a little more than 24 hours away from Apple's big iPhone event, where the company is expected to unveil the latest iteration of its popular smartphone.

And what would an impending Apple event be without a concept video? Check out this clip we came across that shows off possible iPhone 5 design and features...
