Gruber: Optical Image Stabilization in the iPhone 6s Plus makes a big difference for video

It's one of those things where you don't know how noticeable it's going to be until you actually try it in hand. But tonight, we have it on good authority that Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) makes a noticeable difference when shooting video with the iPhone 6s Plus' camera. So much so, that it can make choosing between the 6s Plus and the regular-sized iPhone 6s, a device that lacks OIS, tougher than last year.

A few hours ago, Daring Fireball's John Gruber posted his annual iPhone review, and while the entire piece is a well-thought-out and nuanced read, one portion in particular stood out to me the most—his thoughts on OIS for the iPhone 6s Plus.

iPhone 6s review roundup: 3D Touch a major innovation, amazing cameras, fast performance

The iPhone 6s review embargo lifted this morning, and as is always the case, many outlets immediately published their reviews. Those reviewing the new iPhone 6s have been able to use the new digs for almost two weeks, which is plenty of time to form an accurate opinion.

The consensus? The iPhone 6s is a performance beast, and features amazing camera quality. But what stood out to me most about nearly all of the reviews were the thoughts on 3D Touch. In a nearly unanimous chorus, reviewers praised the iPhone 6s' flagship feature, which allows users to press on the screen to access new menus and features.

iPhone 6s customer receives her device early, benchmarks show a marked increase in power

The iPhone 6s doesn't officially go on sale for another 3 and a half days, but one fortunate customer from San Diego was able to snag hers, even before review embargoes are lifted.

Adrienne Levin, a UX and visual designer living on the west coast, unexpectedly received her Rose Gold iPhone 6s in the mail today. Being the savvy techie that she is, she immediately took to posting 4K videos, pictures of her adorable dog, and, most importantly, Geekbench 3 benchmarks.

The result of said benchmarks? Let's just say you should expect a significant increase in power over the iPhone 6.

Apple: more than 50 percent of devices are already using iOS 9

It's been less than a week since iOS 9 was released, but it's already being used by more than 50 percent of iOS devices, according to an Apple press release. The 50%+ adoption rate in less than a week is, as Apple puts it, the fastest iOS adoption ever.

In addition, Apple reiterated its upcoming launch of the iPhone 6s, stating that customers may come to their local Apple Store on Friday, September 25th, as it will be fulfilling walk-in orders. Customers are thus encouraged to arrive early, as supply will no doubt be limited, especially if there's a specific color/size/carrier combination that you simply must have.

Watch Apple CEO Tim Cook talk iPhone 6s and more on Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last evening to discuss several topics of interest in a ten-minute segment. Among other things, Cook pitched the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus smartphones and talked about Apple's effort to improve its supply chain conditions, his coming out as gay, social responsibility, driverless cars and more.

Apple has even created witty Siri response to Colbert's queries about what he should ask Cook, to which the personal digital assistant responded “Do me a favor. Ask him when I'm going to get a raise”. We have a video of Cook's Tonight Show appearance for you to watch in case you missed the show.

What’s making iPhone 6s heavier than its predecessor?

This year's iPhones, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, are heavier than last year's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models and it's not just due to their stronger Series 7000 aluminum body.

An article posted Monday by The Verge digs a little deeper into the iPhone 6s weight gain and you'll be surprised to learn which new feature is making Apple's new phones heavier than their predecessors.

Apple quietly kills Apple Watch + iPhone extended warranty combo plans

In addition to jacking up prices of its AppleCare+ extended hardware coverage for the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus by an extra $30, Apple appears to have discontinued the combined AppleCare+ warranty for the iPhone and Apple Watch, as first noted by 9to5Mac.

Following April 2015 debut of the Apple Watch, the Cupertino firm introduced combo warranty plans for iPhones that are up to six months old and Apple Watches for combined prices of $149 (Apple Watch Sport + iPhone), $169 (Apple Watch + iPhone) and $1,600 (Apple Watch Edition + iPhone).

Apple’s plans for walk-in iPhone 6s purchases largely unchanged from past iPhone launches

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are scheduled to hit retail stores on September 25 and a new report published today provides an insight into the company's retail launch plans for the new devices.

Though hardly different from past iPhone launches, you're advised to check out the following tidbits for a more seamless shopping experience regardless of whether you have pre-ordered your iPhone with in-store pickup or are planning on waltzing inside your local Apple Store on launch day.

Poll: which new iPhone 6s feature is your favorite?

Apple is “on pace to beat” last year’s ten million unit first-weekend record as the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are about to go on sale on September 25. Chances are that you have by now read all there is about the new iPhones and their major hardware improvements and new features.

Our non-scientific poll has indicated that most people have pre-ordered a 4.7-inch iPhone 6s with sixty-four gigabytes of storage, with Space Gray being the most popular finish. Today, we're asking you to take another poll and tell us what specific feature of the new iPhones you happen to be looking forward the most.

Apple: iPhone 6s on pace to beat last year’s 10 million pre-order record

Apple this morning confirmed in a statement issued to CNBC that its iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are “on pace” to beat the ten million pre-order record established during last year's first-weekend sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The number flies in the face of many clueless analysts who said Apple wouldn’t be able to hit that number this time around because the iPhone has peaked.

Interestingly enough, Apple touted “exceptionally strong” pre-orders for the larger-screened and more expensive 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus, with the initial stock sold out globally.

The company did not announce opening weekend iPhone 6s sales at the time of this writing but we're expecting them to announce the new record via a press release shortly.

Apple estimated to make over $500 for every iPhone 6s sold

Apple apparently makes an estimated $500 for every iPhone 6s sold, according to an analysis by Bank of America Merrill Lynch cited by BusinessInsider.

The investment bank estimates that the components part of the iPhone 6s cost Apple $234, marking a very slight increase from an estimated $200-$247 in parts and labor to build the iPhone 6.

Merrill Lynch's numbers only account for estimated component costs and exclude spending on labor, research and development, software licenses, product assembly, shipping, marketing and other affiliated costs.

Poll: Which iPhone 6s did you buy?

As expected, iPhone 6s pre-orders began in the wee hours on Saturday morning. Like always, Apple's latest iPhone proved to be a hot seller, and many of the models, especially the rose gold, are now on backorder.
