Samsung and Sony take swipes at Apple’s ‘Hey Siri’ event announcements

Following Apple's action-packed media event yesterday which saw introductions of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus smartphones with 3D Display technology, the new iPad Pro with Apple Pencil, the much improved Apple TV and more, both Sony and Samsung took to social media to poke fun of Apple's latest innovation.

As you may have guessed, Samsung especially took swipes at Apple's stylus, which isn't surprising given Steve Jobs' famous “If you see a stylus, they blew it” quote and the fact the Galaxy maker pioneered stylus-enhanced phablets with its Note lineup.

3D Touch: how Peek and Quick Actions will change how you interact with your iPhone

As part of today's event, Apple announced the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus with 3D Touch technology, a hardware and software combination that tracks how much pressure is being applied to the display and carries out different functions based on various levels of pressure. Also announced was the Taptic Engine in Apple's new 6s iPhones, which brings the addition of subtle taps, deepening the experience of 3D Touch with a haptic feedback element. Apple likens 3D Touch's new Peek and Pop actions to the legacy Tap, Swipe, and Pinch Multi-Touch gestures, but with a third dimension of functionality, bringing about the "3D Touch" moniker.

As of today's big launch announcement, Apple now has four really powerful smartphones in its lineup, not including the entry-level iPhone 5s. At the lower end of the totem poll, there's the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. At the top of the lineup are the just-announced iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

In addition to the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, Apple on Wednesday announced new accessories for its next-generation handsets. The products didn't get much stage time, but listed on Apple's website are a new Lightning dock, leather and silicon cases, in new colorways.

The new dock is very similar to the one Apple announced in May, except now it's available in iPhone-matching colors Gold, Rose Gold, Space Gray and Silver. It's compatible with all late-model iPhones and iPod touches, and will be available for online order today for $49.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus price and availability

Apple's just-announced iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available for pre-order on Saturday, September 12th, and ship on September 25th. The iPhone 6s starts at $199 on contract, while the iPhone 6s Plus will be available for $100 more at $299 on contract. Both phones start with 16GB of flash storage space, and as Apple has done for many years now, price increases occur incrementally based on the amount of flash storage.

Just like the rumor-mill has predicted, Apple at its media event in San Francisco this morning announced a pair of new iPhones: the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s and 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus.

“What we have to show you today is really awesome,” said Tim Cook.

Although the design hasn't changed over the present-generation iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as is the norm for S-upgrades, the new devices pack in some major hardware improvements.

Report: iPhone 6s to feature untethered ‘Hey Siri’ functionality

Remember the invitation that Apple sent out to invitees for tomorrow's iPhone 6s event? The invitation contained the phrase "Hey Siri, give us a hint."

According to the Apple Insider's Mikey Campbell, this phrase alludes to a brand new feature shipping with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus—always-on "Hey Siri" functionality.

"Hey Siri" is a function that first debuted in iOS 8, which allows you to invoke Siri hands-free using only your voice. The only catch is that your device has to be plugged in and charging to take advantage of the feature. If Apple Insider's report is true, then the iPhone 6s will be able to use Hey Siri functionality in an untethered fashion.

More iPhone 6s box art leaks ahead of tomorrow’s launch

In yet another sign that we're ridiculously close to launch, several images are now floating around the web showcasing the iPhone 6s box, complete with cover art.

The latest box art leak that I've seen is from @alixrezax, and it features what seems to be a Space Grey iPhone 6s. Unlike last year's sparse white box that featured a mere embossed outline of the phone awaiting inside, this year's model goes back to the product shot and wallpaper seen in past iPhone releases.

Sketchy rumor hints at a Retina resolution bump for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

A post published on the Chinese blog Feng.com back in June claimed that Apple's upcoming 'iPhone 6s' and 'iPhone 6s Plus' smartphones would be gaining a resolution bump, though that report has yet to be corroborated by other more reliable sources.

Be that as it may, this morning some purported specifications for the upcoming iPhones were shared on the microblogging website Weibo and spotted by Feng, suggesting the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will feature increased Retina HD screen resolutions with approximately 25 percent more pixels.
