WhatsApp gains 3D Touch ‘Peek’ and ‘Pop’ gestures on iPhone 6s

Facebook-owned WhatsApp messaging platform has received an update today, bringing support for 3D Touch gestures on new iPhones to the popular software.

The new WhatsApp 2.2.18 allows you to press in-app content harder to Peek and Pop pictures, videos, links, contacts cards and locations in chats. Home screen shortcuts via 3D Touch are not available yet in this release.

In addition, the app's interface is now mirrored and optimized for right-to-left languages on iPhones running iOS 9.0 or later.

GMYLE iPhone 6s wallet case looks like a tiny vintage book

I'm a bit of a sucker for kitschy and novelty cases. You may recall my over-exuberance about a certain bottle opener/cigarette lighter case. If it looks like something it's not, or has features that don't belong on a case, I'm interested.

The GMYLE iPhone 6s wallet case could fit into the novelty category, but it looks so classy that you can't call it kitschy. It looks like you are holding a tiny leather-bound book.

Facebook updates iOS app with 3D Touch support

Facebook's mobile iPhone and iPad application has received a quick update today, adding support for 3D Touch shortcuts on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, but not the Peek and Pop in-app features.

Still, you can now press firmly Facebook's icon on the Home screen for quick access to the following shortcuts: Take Photo/Video, Upload Photo/Video and Write Post.

Day One journaling app updated for iOS 9 with 3D Touch support and native watchOS 2 app

Day One by Bloom Built, my go-to journaling app for iOS and the Mac, has had an app for the Apple Watch since April 2015, but it used to be hampered by the limitations of watchOS.

With watchOS 2, apps can now run directly on the wearable device and more independently of its connected iPhone, resulting in better responsiveness and faster execution. A brand new release of Day One now includes a native watchOS 2 app, support for 3D Touch Home screen shortcuts on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus and more.

Mountek nGroove: a dashboard mount that uses your outdated CD player

Nobody listens to CDs anymore, am I right? OK, I know that CDs are still the most popular form of physical music. However, if you've got 20GB of music right on your iPhone 6s, then you probably don't have a binder full of CDs in your glove box. Which means you probably don't use the CD player in your car very often.

Why not make use of that dusty old CD player by using it to mount your iPhone 6s? Mountek's nGroove is a universal dashboard mount that fits into the CD player slot. So, it doesn't get in the way of your air conditioner, it's not using up valuable cup holder space, and it isn't in your way when you are trying to see out of your windshield.

Cellet Universal Cup Holder Mount extends to 10 inches

If you are in the cup holder mount camp (versus the vent mount or dash mount), you might have a problem with how low your iPhone 6s sits in your car's console. Most car cup holders are positioned in the center console at arms length, which is great for grabbing your soda, but not so great when you are trying to see which street to turn on next.

Cellet makes a Universal Cup Holder Mount with a rotating arm that is 10 inches tall. So, even if your cup holder is too far away, your iPhone 6s doesn't have to be.

SIM-free iPhone 6s now available in Apple’s web store

Heads up to those of you who have been waiting for SIM-free iPhone 6s and 6s Plus handsets. As noted by MacRumors, Apple on Thursday night began offering SIM-free models of its latest smartphones via its web store.

While you could previously buy the iPhone 6s at full retail, they have, until now, included carrier-specific SIM cards. These new models, as the name suggests, do not include any kind of SIM card, meaning they are unlocked.

How to check if you have TSMC or Samsung chip in your iPhone 6s

For the first time ever, Apple has dual-sourced the engine that drives the new handsets from more than one supplier. Both Samsung and rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) won contracts to build the Apple-designed 'A9' system-on-a-chip for the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

While these chips offer literally the same compute and graphics power, both synthetic benchmarks and real-life tests have shown small yet notable difference in terms of battery as the TSCM-built A9 appears to be more power efficient than its Samsung counterpart.

The question is, does your brand spanking new iPhone 6s have the TSMC or Samsung-built chip? You can find that out in just a few simple steps, let me show you how.

iPhone 6s in-store reservations open in Italy, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland & Netherlands

As Apple gears up to launch the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in an additional 40 countries this coming Friday, October 9, in-store reservations for the new handsets have gone live through Apple's Reserve and Pickup program in Belgium, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands, MacRumors reported this morning.

These six European countries are part of Apple's second wave of iPhone 6s launch. Apple has said that the new iPhones will be available in a total of over 130 countries by the end of the year.

The VicTsing Car Charger Mount offers multiple charging ports

I think we've all been in that situation where two, or sometimes three people in the same car are all vying for use with the one charging port in a car. You either have to Ro-Sham-Bo or pull the "its my car" card to get first dibs on charging.

VicTsing makes a multi port car charger with a mount that solves the problem of too many devices and not enough chargers. There are two USB ports extending from one branch, plus an additional DC cigarette lighter port on a second branch, so you could connect an additional car charger at the same time.

This rugged iPhone 6s case is more useful than it looks

There are dozens of rugged cases on the market with a vast array of features and options. However, we recently came across one that has a few unique additions that will make you the life of the party.

ZVE makes a rugged case for the iPhone 6s that has a bottle opener and cigarette lighter built into the backside. Yes, a cigarette lighter! What we wonder is, how do you get the lighter fluid inside without dribbling it all over the iPhone?

Review: Spigen Slim Armor Volt wireless charging case

In addition to Spigen's GLAS.tR SLIM screen protector, I've been using its Slim Armor Volt wireless charging case for my iPhone 6s Plus. Spigen sent me a care package filled with a boatload of cases, and this one was by far the most intriguing to me.

There are a good number of Android phones that feature wireless charging capabilities out of the box, but there has never been such a feature for the iPhone. Instead, iOS users will need to opt for some sort of third-party wireless charging case solution, and the Spigen Slim Armor Volt fits the bill.

How well does it work? Watch our full video review and see for yourself.
