Apple Worm case for iPhone features built-in stand and Lightning cable

If you've perused the wall of iPhone accessories at your local Apple Store, you know that cases aren't just for protecting the handset anymore. Some of them have built-in batteries or flashlights, and some even feature built-in knives.

The case we're talking about today is also multi-functional. It's called the Apple Worm, and in addition to protecting your iPhone, it features a built-in Lightning cable that will allow you to charge the device and doubles as a stand...

Photos claim to show Apple prototype of crocs-style iPhone 5s case

Apple caused quite a bit of commotion this September when it unveiled two new custom cases for its two new iPhone models. The 5s case is boring for the most part, made of leather, but the 5c case and its crocs-like design drew a number of oohs and aahs.

In our review, we praised the case for its construction, but questioned the placement of the rear holes as they let part of the 'iPhone' label show through. Well interestingly enough, a new report claims Apple was working on a crocs-like case for the 5s as well...

Some Apple Stores now matching iPhone 5c, iPad Air deals

Looking for a deal on an iPhone 5c or iPad Air for the holidays? Well it looks like your local Apple Store may be able to help out. According to a new report, a number of locations have started to price-match on these new products.

This means that if you see a sale going on at your nearby carrier store or electronics reseller, you might be able to get Apple to match their prices. It sounds like discounting will stop at 10% and of course other restrictions apply...

Who are iPhone 5c buyers?

Industry analyst Dominic Sunnebo explains some of the latest smartphone sales data collected by his firm, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. According to him, the typical iPhone 5c buyer is older and not as wealthy as the average iPhone 5s buyer:

The cheaper 5C appeals to a broader audience than Apple usually attracts. In the US, the biggest demand for these mid-end models is coming from lower income households. Some 42% of iPhone 5C owners earn less than $49,000 compared with just 21% for iPhone 5S. iPhone 5C customers also tend to be slightly older at an average of 38 years compared to 34 years for the 5S. The good news for Apple is that this wider appeal is attracting significant switching from competitors. Almost half of iPhone 5C owners switched from competitor brands, particularly Samsung and LG, compared with 80% of 5S owners who upgraded from a previous iPhone model.

It might be misunderstood, but the iPhone 5c sure is bringing new customers in.

China Mobile quietly opens iPhone 5s, 5c reservation system

Late yesterday evening, China Mobile quietly launched a reservation for the iPhone 5s and 5c via its subsidiary in Suzhou—a major city in Eastern China. This serves as one of the first concrete traces that Apple has in fact reached a deal with the world's largest carrier.

Rumors about the partnership have intensified in recent months, and in November, the state-run news outlet Xinhua reported that an official announcement would be made on December 18. The two sides have been negotiating an iPhone deal for more than 5 years...

T-Mobile offering iPhone 5s/5c with $0 down for Black Friday weekend only

Black Friday is just around the corner and TMoNews is reporting that T-Mobile USA will be offering Apple's iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c with $0 down on its usual installment plans, for the Black Friday weekend only, November 29. Following the weekend, limited time pricing "for these amazing devices" will be available beginning Cyber Monday, December 2, as per the carrier's internal memo.

I'm guessing these prices are for entry-level iPhones with sixteen gigabytes of storage. For those wondering, that’s a $149 saving on the iPhone 5s and a $49 saving on the iPhone 5c right off the bat as you’ll be paying about $20 per month for 24 months on T-Mobile's installment plans. I've included the full details right after the break...

In Japan, iPhone 5s/5c outsold other smartphones by 3:1 during October

The new iPhones are on fire in Japan! We already know Apple’s smartphone share in the 127 million people country is bigger than that in the United States as the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c seemingly break sales records in one of the most competitive tech markets on the planet.

Counterpoint Research gave the iPhone a cool 34 percent share of Japan’s smartphone market during the month of October, with Kantar giving Apple a slight lead over Android in Japan.

But according to Kantar's latest revised data, the iPhone maker has grabbed more than three-quarters of new smartphone sales last month in the Land of the Rising Sun...

WSJ: Foxconn ramping up iPhone 5s production

Yesterday we reported that online iPhone 5s availability had improved, with shipping estimates lowered to 3-5 days. Now, this newfound inventory could be the result of greater production yields, lower demand, or both.

But according to The Wall Street Journal, it's likely the former. The news outlet is reporting this morning that Foxconn has boosted production capacity for the iPhone 5s, at the expense of the 5c, at the request of Apple...

China Mobile to launch its 4G LTE network next month

Rumors have been circulating for the past few weeks that China Mobile is on the verge of launching its LTE network next month. And it looks like the reports were true, as the news has been confirmed this week by state-run news outlet Xinhua.

This is big news for a couple of reasons. For one, this will be the country's first major rollout of 4G. And two, it means Apple will finally be able to start offering its two latest iPhone models on China Mobile, as they support its TD-LTE standard...

Rumor: Apple now testing 4.9-inch iPhone 6 and iPhone 5c successor

A Chinese blog that leaked a few credible Apple parts earlier in the year is out with a new report that's making the rounds this morning. Apparently, Apple has begun testing upcoming iPhone models with larger screens that go beyond the current four-inch form factor the company inaugurated with the iPhone 5 release a year ago. A large-screen iPhone 6 was mulled before, but this is the first time anyone mentioned an iPhone 5c successor adopting a bigger screen as well.

On the flip side, it's impossible to take these reports at face value. These things are often misinterpreted and even Tim Cook bothered to urge people not to read too much into such a complex beast as Apple's supply chain. Moreover, it goes without saying that Apple is constantly experimenting with various form factors, which could explain these rumors...

Apple’s aggressive iPhone trade-ins in India could include try-and-buy

India Today on Monday said Apple has partnered with India's local distributors (Apple Stores don't operate in the country) on a smartphone trade-in program against new iPhone 5c and iPhone 4s purchases in an attempt to boost sales of the colorful new iPhone that has largely failed to attract buyers compared to the flagship iPhone 5s.

The Times of India today shared some additional tidbits about the initiative and it seems the country's would-be iPhone buyers can now bring in their old iPhone or one of non-Apple handsets to claim lower prices against new iPhone 4s/5c purchases, and other benefits. More on that right below...
