AT&T iPhone 3GS Price Bump is Meant to Prevent Fraud

Since AT&T increased the price of the iPhone 3GS from a bargainous FREE to the perplexing $0.99, we've all been asking the same question: Why? When Apple announced the iPhone 4S, they made a point of repricing the iPhone 3GS as a free option.

Why would AT&T take the unusual step or increasing the price of a handset that Apple itself had declared would be free, and increase it by just a dollar? Strange indeed.

The move was perhaps not as strange as we originally thought. One forum member claiming to work for AT&T believes they may have the answer, and it's all about stopping fraudsters from stealing handsets...

A lot of folks expected Apple to introduce an all-new handset this year. But instead of unveiling a completely new iPhone model, Apple announced that it was going to make its iPhone 3GS free with contract to appeal to the low-end smartphone market.

The $0 handset has reportedly been doing very well for AT&T. One can only imagine the marketing power of the phrase "get a free iPhone today." But it doesn't look like the carrier will be able to use such a tagline anymore, as it's mysteriously raised the 3GS' price tag to $0.99...

iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS Still Top Dog For Smartphone Sales in Q3

It would appear that the prospect of a new iPhone being announced alongside a price drop for existing models didn't disuade purchasers from picking up an iPhone 4 or 3GS during Q3, with Apple's two older handsets continuing to rule the roost in the US.

New figures from NPD show that both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS continued to sell strongly during the third quarter, with the premium iPhone 4 sitting pretty above its cheaper brother and a host of Android-powered devices.

Despite Android outselling iOS as a platform, Apple's hardware is still proving to be the most favored by buyers, with HTC, Motorola, and Samsung taking the remaining places in the top 5 handsets by units sold...

Siri has certainly been at the forefront of tech news over the last few weeks. Since Apple introduced the digital assistant at its iPhone 4S event in October, it seems to be everyone's favorite subject. And the question on everyone's mind is, can it be ported to other devices?

To make a long story short, yes, it can. Although it's not available to the public (and likely won't be for some time, if ever), developers have managed to successfully port Siri to the iPhone 4. And as we've seen, it works really well. But why stop there?

As someone who has been lucky enough to spend the last few months testing iOS 5 in various beta stages, it has to be said that the version we're all currently enjoying has come a long way since the early days.

When Apple released the iOS 5 GM not that long ago, I instantly noticed that my iPhone 4's battery life was lasting roughly half of what it was before. A coincidence, I thought. It'll sort itself out, I presumed. After getting the iPhone 4S, the problem persisted. Twitter and forums on the web over lit up with similar problems, and a few fixes were suggested, mostly to no avail.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel. Switching one little toggle in iOS 5's Settings app may hold the key to curing your iPhone 4S battery...

Apple's iOS platform rules the roost in the enterprise, according to new figures released by Good Technology.

The firm, which offers push e-mail, mobile device management, and security products for mobile phones, released the numbers that appear to show both the iPhone and iPad dominating device usage in the enterprise market.

After announcing the iPhone 4S pricing at its "Let's Talk iPhone" event on October 4th, Apple also announced that it would be further reducing the pricing for the older generation iPhone 3GS 8GB from $49 to $0 with a 2-year carrier agreement.

As promised, the iPhone Dev Team released an update to the UltraSn0w unlock for iOS 5 today. This update allows users with unlockable basebands running iOS 5 to unlock their iPhone 3GS, or iPhone 4.

This version of UltraSn0w (1.2.4) doesn't add any new basebands to the compatibility list, but if you're running basebands 4.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, or 06.15.00 on the iPhone 3GS, or baseband 01.59.00 on the iPhone 4, then you can unlock your device right now...
