Passbook apps now showing up in App Store

iOS 6 went live today and with it a new feature called Passbook, basically a central repository for coupons, airplane tickets, loyalty cards and other types of digital coupons. Now, Passbook can detect and automatically import these digital items from your email messages and on the web sites you visit.

All web developers need to do is implement support for Apple’s new “.pkpass” mime type, like airlines did. Supporting the new feature, Apple added a new dedicated App Store section that lists third-party programs which support Passbook...

The iPhone Dev Team introduces new RE-Restore functionality into RedSn0w

Hot on the heels of the iOS 6 official release, the iPhone Dev Team, headline by its most prominent member, MuscleNerd, is making moves as well.

Today they introduce new RE-Restore functionality that will allow users on iOS 5.1.1 to restore their devices to a fresh install iOS 5.1.1. This can come in handy if you ever need a fresh install for whatever reason, i.e. a bad jailbreak install, etc.

For those eligible to use the RE-restore, this means that you never have to worry about losing your 5.1.1 jailbreak, as long as you don't go near iOS 6. Check inside for the details...

Apple updates iLife, iWork and other iOS utils

With today's release of iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2, Apple has updated its Podcasts app with support for iCloud subscription syncing. Just a few minutes later, updates to Apple's other apps went live in iTunes, including iLife and iWork apps and utils like Find My Friends, Remote, AirPort Utility and more. With so many third-party apps being updated for iOS 6 support as we speak, you may want to prioritize your downloads. Here's what's new in Apple's own updated apps for your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad...

An iOS 6 review from a jailbreaker’s perspective

I know everyone may not agree with this, but I think iOS 6 is worth ditching a jailbreak for, at least temporarily until a jailbreak surfaces. People that say you can get all of iOS 6's features with a jailbroken version of iOS 5 are kidding themselves.

iOS 6 is an interesting piece of work, and it's available now. The biggest story about iOS 6 is Apple’s banishing Google from nearly all facets of the OS. Nowhere is this more apparent than with the new Maps app — arguably the biggest feature of iOS 6.

Some claim that Google’s demotion within the Apple ecosystem is actually a step back for iOS, but I say otherwise. After months of usage, it’s clear that iOS users are much better off with an Apple designed Maps app. The Flyover (3D maps) option contained within iOS 6 shows promise, but without a doubt the inclusion of turn-by-turn navigation is my most used feature. Combined with Siri voice commands, it works gloriously...

iOS 6 now available for download

As expected, Apple has released iOS 6 this morning. After months of seeding beta versions of the new software to developers, it has finally made the update available to the public.

iOS 6 is the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, and it adds over 200 new features to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. But there are a few things you should know before you update.

Note: If you're not seeing iOS 6 yet, don't worry. It's a rolling update, so it will get to you eventually. Also, downloads might be running slow right now given Apple's servers are slammed...

TinyUmbrella updated to support iOS 6

It seems like it's been forever since we've seen a TinyUmbrella update. The SHSH blob-saver has been noticeably absent throughout the summer as Apple has released multiple iOS 6 betas.

But notcom, the utility's creator, broke the silence this week, announcing that TU has finally been updated to support the new software. It now works with iOS 6 and the latest Apple TV firmware...

Net neutrality complaint over AT&T FaceTime blocking looms

AT&T's initial decision to charge for FaceTime video calls made over its cellular network and the subsequently tweaked rules mandating that FaceTime over cellular users sign up for AT&T's Mobile Share plans both provoked a public outrage which almost snowballed into a PR catastrophe.

Deciding someone should take the nation's biggest carrier to task for taking advantage of its unsuspecting customers, advocacy group Public Knowledge (PG) figured that AT&T's policy violates net neutrality rules by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The group is mulling an investigation into AT&T's practices as Public Knowledge, Free Press and the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute all plan to file a complaint with the FCC for AT&T's violation of network neutrality rules...

Is iOS 6 a dud for jailbreakers?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and for that reason, let me preface this post with a disclaimer: I'm not bashing anyone's right to an opinion. That's one of the things that makes life so great, differing points of view on all sorts of matters.

Apparently, whoever posted this post on the Big Boss blog isn't too high on iOS 6, in fact, they go as far as to label it a "dud."

I certainly don't feel that way; I'm the complete opposite. That made me think, do most jailbreakers feel this way about iOS 6? Are many of you guys and gals planning on staying right where you are on iOS 5 until a jailbreak is released for iOS 6?

Apple promoting its free apps on iOS 6 using new App Store page

If you're a developer running iOS 6, try opening up the App Store app and open the Featured tab. As 9to5Mac points out, chances are you'll be greeted with a new page promoting five free Apple apps.

Exclusive: Apple’s iPhone 5 and iOS 6 training docs

We’re counting down the remaining days until the official iPhone 5 launch and if analysts' estimates and pre-orders are anything to go by, we’re looking to a massive release that should/will easily dwarf any other consumer electronics announcement in 2012.

As part of its preparations for the D-day, the company has provided its retailers with training materials in order to get sales reps up to speed ahead of Friday's launch of the "boring" handset.

A pair of documents iDB has exclusively obtained communicate eight key messages: thinnest and lightest iPhone, four-inch Retina display, ultrafast wireless, the A6 chip, an eight-megapixel iSight camera on the back, all-new EarPods and improved audio, the new Lightning connector and of course iOS 6 and iCloud....

Apple Maps to integrate Russian Yandex’s data in iOS 6, report says

Google's relationship with Apple may be on borrowed time. Apple Maps, set to appear soon in iOS 6, will reportedly use a local company's data Yandex to provide location-search details in Russia. A developer version of iOS 6 will send users to Yandex.Maps for further information regarding locations.

A search of Vladimir Lenin's Mausoleum, for instance, gets "more details on Yandex.Maps application or offers to download Yandex.Maps from App Store if the user doesn't have it installed," a Russian developer now using iOS 6 tells Bloomberg.
