If you've heard of the new tool Houdini but haven't got around to trying it out yet, then let us show you how in this quick guide. If you haven't heard of it, check out my post on the topic for a bit of background information.
iOS 10
LockWatch, PhotosLock, Snoverlay, and other jailbreak tweaks to check out this weekend
Cydia isn’t quite bustling right now, but we’ve seen some exciting activity in the community recently by way of semi-jailbreaks and exploits that could potentially lead to something exciting on iOS 11 in the future. While there’s no guarantee of anything special coming out of it, we can still cross our fingers and hope for the best.
Whether current versions of iOS will receive a jailbreak or not continues to baffle the best of us, but those sporting iOS 10 devices jailbroken with Yalu can still enjoy all of Cydia's latest releases. In this roundup, we’ll talk about our favorite jailbreak tweaks launched during the past week. As usual, we’ll begin by showcasing our favorites and outline the rest of them afterward.
Houdini “semi-jailbreak” for iOS 10.x released
You may remember us reporting on the most recent jailbreak to be released, Saïgon. Well, its developer Abraham Masri is back, with something inventive we haven't seen before. Perhaps best described as a "semi-jailbreak", his tool Houdini achieves some of the effects of a jailbreak, whilst avoiding the hardest challenges and pitfalls which constructing the full package would bring.
Decorate your jailbroken iPhone for the holidays with Snoverlay
Oodles of people are preparing for the upcoming holidays right about now, and jailbreakers can do the same by taking advantage of a new free jailbreak tweak called Snoverlay by iOS developer leftyfl1p.
Installing Snoverlay causes snowflakes to rain down on your device’s Home screen and Lock screen wallpapers, as shown above.
This tweak ports the iPad Camera app interface to the iPhone
I routinely use the Camera app on both my iPhone and iPad, but between the two, I prefer the look and feel of the Camera interface on the iPad.
If you’re in the same boat, then a new free jailbreak tweak called iPad Cam for iPhone (iOS 10) by iOS developer Adel Hammoud might be right up your alley.
LockWatch adds Apple Watch-inspired clocks to your iPhone’s Lock screen
As an avid Apple Watch user, I was excited to learn about a jailbreak tweak dubbed LockWatch by iOS developer Sniper_GER, which ports several of the Apple Watch’s watch faces to the Lock screen of jailbroken devices.
LockWatch continues to undergo development as of this writing, but it’s a fascinating to check the time on your iPhone precisely as you would when glancing at your wrist. Furthermore, the tweak supports both analog and digital watch faces, to provide options for those with personal preference.
Passcode-protect the contents of your Photos app with PhotosLock
Most people take their virtual privacy seriously, and a new free jailbreak tweak dubbed PhotosLock by iOS developer Ian enforces this rule of thumb for any jailbreakers that might fall under this category.
As you might have inferred from the tweak’s name already, PhotosLock lets you lock your Photos app with an independent passcode. Acting as a second layer of security, it hides your personal photos from prying eyes.
BetterPowerMenu gives your iPhone’s power down menu a new look and feel
Anyone with a jailbroken iOS 10 device presumably avoids the power down menu because of their semi-untethered jailbreak. On the other hand, a new free jailbreak tweak called BetterPowerMenu iOS developer Huub Lubbers can change that.
The tweak makes two significant changes to the power down menu, such as adding a respring button and supplying customization options so that you have more control over how the interface looks and feels.
Disable Waze’s menu-based swipe gesture with FarewellGestureWaze
Waze is one of the most popular third-party navigation apps for the iOS platform, but some users find that the interface isn’t without its quirks. For example, the swipe gesture you might use to access the app’s built-in menu could potentially clash with other gestures.
If you experience this problem yourself, then a new free jailbreak tweak called FarewellGestureWaze by iOS developer CydiaGeek should remedy the problem. After installation, it prevents this gesture from launching the Waze app’s built-in menu.
Looking for more Cydia repositories? We’ve got you covered
BigBoss became the last-standing default Cydia repository for jailbreak tweak developers and theme creators to submit packages to following the permanent archival of ModMyi and ZodTTD/MacCiti, but did you know there are several other Cydia repositories that you can download fun and exciting jailbreak add-ons from?
No, we’re not referring to piracy repositories and other shady sources; instead, we’re talking about third-party sources hosted by honest jailbreak developers for storing beta software, pre-releases, and jailbreak add-ons that you really can't get anywhere else.
Erie, ScrollBack, Signal, and other jailbreak tweaks to check out this weekend
While there’s been some turbulence in the jailbreak community as of late following the archival of the ModMyi and ZodTTD/MacCiti repositories, the BigBoss repository continues to serve the community by hosting a plethora of new jailbreak tweak releases.
In this roundup, we’ll discuss all this past week’s tweak releases. As we do every weekend, we’ll start by showcasing our favorite jailbreak tweaks of the week, and then we’ll outline the rest afterward.
ScrollBack returns you to your place on a page after accidentally scrolling to the top via the Status Bar
In case you were unaware, you can quickly jump back to the top of a scrollable page in iOS by tapping on the Status Bar. This gesture has been possible in iOS for the longest time, and while it’s helpful, I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes I tap it by accident.
Nothing can be more frustrating than losing your place on a scrollable page and starting over at the top again, but a new free jailbreak tweak called ScrollBack by iOS developer leftyfl1p strives to make your life a little bit easier in these scenarios.
