Use your iPhone for self defense with this pepper spray case

Pepper spray is one of the best tools for self defense when being mugged, or worse, by a criminal. However, it's one of those things that you won't always have on you, especially if you're not a female who carries a purse.

Luckily, Swiss manufacturer Piexon has developed the new Smartguard case for the iPhone 4/4S that combines a can of pepper spray right on an iPhone case, leaving it always at your disposal...

Dash integrates your iPhone into your car’s dashboard

Nothing makes a long car ride go by faster than listening to your favorite music, which is obviously played through your iOS device. There are many stereos and FM transmitters that will allow you to play music from your iOS device to your car's stereo, but nothing that quite lets you integrate it into the dash.

We're huge fans of Kickstarter and have shown you many projects from there before, and today we're here to show you a concept called 'Dash' that lets you easily integrate your iOS device into your car's dashboard...

iOS 5.0.1 security flaw lets anyone bypass password protection to make a phone call and view contacts

iOS bugs and security flaws are taken seriously by not only customers, but also by Apple. There have been many that allow others to access your information, including contacts and pictures. Most recently, a bug was found that allows anyone to make a FaceTime call on your iOS device.

Today a new security flaw is brought to light by iPhone Islam, where anyone can make a call out and access your iPhone contacts despite any passcode you might have in place.

Apple responds to ‘antennagate’ settlement

Yesterday, it was reported that a settlement was reached in the 'antennagate' lawsuit against Apple. The settlement includes Apple issuing a free iPhone bumper case or $15 to each US customer who purchased the iPhone 4. Apple has until April 30, 2012 to send an email out to every customer.

Responding to the settlement, Apple has issued a statement to The Loop...

Apple settles ‘Antennagate’ lawsuit: free iPhone bumper or $15 for iPhone 4 owners

After the iPhone 4 was first launched, many users began to notice 3G reception issues when placing their palm over the antenna part of their iPhone 4. The issue was quickly dubbed the "antennagate" by bloggers.

While also receiving many complaints from customers and a few lawsuits, Apple quickly made free iPhone bumper cases available to everyone, which they said remedied the issue. The issue was fixed in iPhone 4s manufactured later.

One of those US class-action lawsuits is finally seeing a settlement, reports Cnet...

Avoid water damage and more with LifeProof iPhone case

We've written about a number of "durable" iPhone cases here on iDB, including the Case-Mate Tank and the RainBallet. And in the comment threads of every one of those posts, readers kept bringing up the LifeProof case. So we figured we would mention it.

For those who haven't heard of the LifeProof, it's an ultra-durable iPhone case that's thinner than the popular Otterbox Defender, and can handle much more punishment...

New SIM interposer promises to unlock iPhone 4/4S on a number of basebands

Unlocking is not nearly as important to iPhone users as it once was. Over the last couple of years, Apple has opened up its popular handset to hundreds of new carriers, and has even started selling its own factory unlocked models.

But if you don't want to spend $650 buying the unlocked version of Apple's new iPhone 4S, you have a few other options. One, you could wait for the iPhone Dev team to release its unlock for the new handset. Or you can pre-order one of these...

i4Siri: a promising 3rd party Siri server

Ever since the possibility of a Siri Proxy server was first unveiled, it's been all the rage. The promise of being able to run Siri on older devices? Count me and about a million other people in.

Now you can hardly look around without seeing some blurb about a 3rd party Siri server, and although security (or lack thereof) is still a big concern, it's apparently not concerning enough to keep the masses of pre-iPhone 4S owners away.

Andrew Sheridan, one of the primary folks behind the i4Siri project reached out to me about a month ago asking me to try his Siri server. Here are some of the results of that trial...

iOS 5.0.1 bug lets anyone make FaceTime calls on your iPhone, even with security settings

Canadian tech blogger Ade Barkah has discovered a new security loophole in Apple's most recent iOS update, iOS 5.0.1. It involves FaceTime, and lets anyone make a call out, even with the highest security settings in place.

The loophole has been confirmed to work on both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, and hopefully is addressed by Apple soon. Barkah details the bug on his blog...

iPhone Developers Now Required to Submit Retina App Screenshots

As noted by MacRumors, Apple has notified its iOS developers that future app updates and submissions are now required to include screenshots that meet Retina resolution specifications.

The requirement applies to both iPhone and iPod touch developers, and it looks like Apple won't be approving apps that don't qualify...

First Time Smartphone Buyers Prefer Android Over iPhone

According to research firm NPD Group, Apple has passed up Samsung and LG to become the #1 selling US handset brand in the fourth quarter of 2011. Between the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, the iPhone accounted for 43% of the US smartphone market, even though Android's market share increased to 48%.

Combined, iOS and Android devices accounted for over 90% of US sales, leaving Blackberry, Windows Phone and other mobile OSs under 10%.

The NPD went on to say that 57% of first time US smartphone buyers go with an Android device, while only 34% of first time buyers purchased iPhones...
