BlackRa1n Release Now Imminent

Some good news for everyone waiting for the release of BlackRa1n, the latest tool that will jailbreak all iDevices. GeoHot, the genius developer behind BlackRa1n posted this picture on Twitter a few minutes ago, swearing it was no Photoshop job.

This image shows the RC1 (Release Candidate) of BlackRa1n running on a PC. So that's an extra good news for everyone out there who doesn't have access to a Mac to run PwnageTool.

GeoHot had given himself an ETA of 2 days which got delayed by the release of iPhone OS 3.1.2. Even though BlackRa1n was confirmed to work on 3.1.2, GeoHot still had to make a few tweaks to it.

The jailbreak community has been eagerly waiting for BlackRa1n for days now and we're all hoping for a full release of this "miracle jailbreak" sometimes today or later this weekend.

BlackRa1n Confirmed to Work On OS 3.1.2

GeoHot confirmed on Twitter that BlackRa1n still works on the new 3.1.2 firmware as he successfully jailbroke his iPhone 3GS running the latest OS 3.1.2.

That is a big relief for many of us but that doesn't mean you should rush to update. As we wrote a few minutes ago, jailbreakers and unlockers should stay away from 3.1.2, at least for the time being.

There is obviously some more work for GeoHot and he notified us that there will be a delay in the release of BlackRa1n, which was initially expected to be available today.

More to come, so stay tuned!

BlackRa1n is the New iPhone and iPod Touch Jailbreak

We already knew that GeoHot was up to something but we now have confirmation that he is this close to release a new jailbreaking tool called BlackRa1n.

First, he wrote a short blog post titled "I'm just going to leave this here". The post has no text besides the title and shows what could be mistaken for an iPhone running a bunch of codes that most of us wouldn't understand. Well, it's not an iPhone. It's an iPod Touch 3G. You can tell by simply looking at the location of the image, which reveals its name: ipt3_jailbroken.JPG. You can also tell by zooming in the image.

What does this mean? Well, this is a teaser to tell us that he has successfully jailbroken the iPod Touch 3G, which could be considered as the hardest device to jailbreak these days. And from what I understand, he's using the same exploit on both the iTouch 3G and the iPhone 3GS. According to this tweet, he's pretty much done with these 2 devices and will now get to work on the 4 others, which shouldn't take too long.

GeoHot also gave us 2 interesting clues about the name of his new jailbreak. First, he said his new website was up, asking who could find it. Then he gave it all away by saying that "black is the new purple". Have you connected the dots yet? His last jailbreak was called PurpleRa1n. If black is the new purple, then his new jailbreak is BlackRa1n (see BlackRa1n.com).

We still don't know exactly when to expect BlackRa1n to be available but according to GeoHot's own ETA, it should be sometimes today. One thing is sure though, I will be refreshing GeoHot's Twitter page like a maniac for the next 12 hours.

This BlackRa1n jailbreak will be a huge release for many of us jailbreakers, especially those stuck at 3.1. Are you one of them?

New Tool by GeoHot to Jailbreak All iDevices

You remember GeoHot? He was the 18 y/o kid who was the first to unlock the first gen iPhone back in 2007. More recently, GeoHot released PurpleRa1n, which was the first jailbreak method for the iPhone 3GS running OS 3.0. In other words, the kid is a little genius...

Lucky for us, GeoHot is back at it and this time, he decided that just jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS was not challenging enough so he took on the task to release a tool that will jailbreak all iDevices: iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, iPod Touch 1G, 2G, and 3G.

In a blog post called "Meet the Family"  (see picture above), GeoHot says it all in just a few words: "And prepare to meet the program that will jailbreak them all."

This great new comes just a few days after the Dev Team released its own jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS 3.1 and iPod Touch 2G 3.1.1; a jailbreak which still prevents iPhone 3GS users to jailbreak if they updated their iPhones to 3.1 without pwning it first. This is obviously a big problem for many users who had updated to 3.1 and are now stuck there without being able to jailbreak (even though there are some tricky workarounds).

GeoHot doesn't have a name for the tool yet. We actually don't know much about what it will do besides that we know it will "jailbreak them all". Will it work on both Mac and PC? We don't know but I do think it will.

The big question is "when". When will this tool be released? GeoHot said on Twitter he's got an ETA of 2 days. I really can't wait to see what he's got up his sleeves and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

As usual, I will keep you updated as the news come. You can always refer to our jailbreak section for the most up-to-date info on jailbreaking.

Isn't that some good news?

Dev Team Says UltraSn0w Is Better Than PurpleSn0w

The friendly fight between the Dev Team and GeoHot keeps going as the Dev Team posted a blog post this morning highlighting how much better than PurpleSn0w UltraSn0w is.

Works on both 3G and 3GS Works on hacktivated devices Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever.  (Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out). Doesn’t install any additional daemon Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition :) Is available now via Cydia.  Source repo is http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com (that last “0” in ultrasn0w is a zero!)

That was the short version... If you want to full geeky version of this, head over the Dev Team's blog. Although PurpleSn0w might not be perfect, the Dev Team used parts and pieces of GeoHot's findings and included them in the latest UltraSn0w 0.9 update (available through Cydia).

What's really better? UltraSn0w or PurpleSn0w?

Honestly, I don't know. I don't need to unlock my iPhone right now so I haven't even tried any of these. If I had to pick one though, I'd choose UltraSn0w. I trust the Dev Team is doing what's best for your iPhone now but also takes into account future updates that might render the unlock impossible. GeoHot on the other hand, seems to be a burning head.

Have you tried UltraSn0w and PurpleSn0w? If so, what do you think?

GeoHot Releases PurlpleSn0w iPhone 3GS Unlock

A few days after releasing PurpleRa1n, the first iPhone 3GS jailbreak, GeoHot has now created his own iPhone 3GS unlock called PurpleSn0w.

Wifi fails? Battery fails? Unlock fails? You need purplesn0w, the geohot 3GS unlock solution. Now I know you here a lot about different colors of sn0w, but I'm here to tell you why purplesn0w is the best. First off, what is purplesn0w? It's a soft unlock for your 3GS that I'd actually use day to day. It's not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn't add a task to your baseband. It's very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist(which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet).

Many users reported losing wifi connection and not being able to get any signal after unlocking their iPhone with UltraSn0w, so hopefully PurpleSn0w will get better feedback.

Follow these steps to install PurpleSn0w:

First your iPhone has to be jailbroken (see jailbreak guides) Launch Cydia and add this source: http://apt.geohot.com Install the com.geohot.purplesn0w package Reboot your iPhone Done!

If you want to unlock your iPhone for T-Mobile, make sure you disable 3G in the settings.

GeoHot also posted technical information about PurpleSn0w. If you're into dissecting lines of codes, GeotHot made the source code available for you to play with.

PurpleRa1n iPhone 3GS Jailbreak For Mac

PurpleRa1n, the iPhone 3GS jailbreak developed by young hacker GeoHot, has finally been released for Mac users too.

You asked for it, and we delivered. I'm not a mac coder, so AriX and westbaer stepped up to do it. Also, some more payload stability improvements were made, and the windows version was updated to RC2a. There is no reason to run RC2a if you already have RC2 installed.

I updated the PurpleRa1n tutorial.

Note that PurpleRa1n is not a perfect jailbreak and that many apps won't work (ie. WinterBoard). Jailbreak at your own risks...

iPhone 3GS Jailbreak PurpleRa1n Gets An Update

GeoHot, the hacker behind the first iPhone 3GS jailbreak, posted the RC2 version of PurpleRa1n. When it first came out yesterday, PurpleRa1n only supported Windows XP SP2 32 Bit. It's now been updated and along with other improvements, it supports Vista and Windows 7.

Vista, Windows 7, International, 64-bit support Less flakiness in the payload Cydia tar cleaned up Improved logging with slightly more useful errors New kernel patches, codesign errors gone. Props posixninja Added vm_map +x, passed vm_check No winterboard yet, but now that ball is in Saurik's court :-) Still in beta, use caution

As you can see, WinterBoard still won't work but there is some major improvements. You may download PurpleRa1n from our iPhone downloads page (read PurpleRa1n tutorial). Use at your own risks though...

iPhone 3GS Jailbreak With PurpleRa1n

Not even a week after showing solid proofs of a successful iPhone 3GS jailbreak, GeoHot officially released PurpleRa1n, a tool to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS. The Dev Team planned to release their 3GS jailbreak after the OS 3.1 update but GeoHot just couldn't wait.

Normally I don't make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn't how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn't worth waiting because you might have the "last" hole in the iPhone. What last hole...this isn't golf. I'll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it's just a matter of tools.

Before going through a short PurpleRa1n tutorial, there are a few things you need to know:

This is a beta release with some major hiccups. It is not stable at all. PurpleRa1n only works with 32 Bit Windows XP SP2 works fine on Windows and Mac You must have the latest version of iTunes installed The jailbreak is incomplete and many apps won't work (ie WinterBoard)
