New RedSn0w Update To Make Use of iOS 5 SHSH Blobs for Downgrading

Hot on the heels of the iFaith update from iH8sn0w that made iOS 5 SHSH blobs usable, the DevTeam is working on updating RedSn0w to do something similar.

Just a few minutes ago, iPhone DevTeam member MuscleNerd tweeted that an upcoming release makes both TinyUmbrella and Cydia blob saves useful for iOS 5.0+. This is great news for would be downgraders...

As we told you yesterday, iFaith — the Windows based tool that allows you to manage SHSH blobs on all devices sans the iPhone 4S — has been updated with the ability to save iOS 5.x blobs, and create custom firmware that you can use to downgrade your iOS 5 device.

It works very similar to RedSn0w's stitching feature, except the big difference here is that it encompasses Apple's APTicket and features iOS 5 compatibility.

Up until now it was impossible to downgrade an iOS 5.x device to a previous version of iOS 5. That's no longer the case, as our video tutorial shows you inside...

Reminder: Jailbreakers Should Stay Away from iOS 5.0.1

We've told you before, but it doesn't hurt to say it again. As MuscleNerd just confirmed on Twitter moments ago, and as we told you yesterday, you should stay away from the iOS 5.0.1 update if you are a jailbreaker/unlocker.

Not only does iOS 5.0.1 patch exploits that could potentially allow for an untethered jailbreak, but there is also currently no way to downgrade from iOS 5.0.1 should you need to restore from a jailbreak...

How to Stitch Your SHSH Blobs Using RedSn0w to Create Firmware That Can Always Be Downgraded

If you checked out our RedSn0w 0.9.9b1 video walkthrough, you saw for yourself how much of a drastic change the latest version is.

One of the most compelling features added to the new RedSn0w, is the ability to 'stitch' your SHSH blobs to their corresponding firmwares. This makes it so that you have a self contained means of downgrading firmware, well after it stops being signed by Apple.

Even better, is the fact that it's completely standalone, meaning you won't have to do any trickery in order to get iTunes to let you downgrade. By stitching an SHSH blob to a firmware file, iTunes is none the wiser.

Saving your SHSH blobs is the single most important thing you can do to preserve your jailbreak. If you ever accidentally upgraded to a new version of iOS that hasn't been jailbroken yet, saved SHSH blobs would help you downgrade.

The new version of TinyUmbrella is out (version 5.00.77), and not only does it allow you to save your SHSH blobs for the new 4.3.5 firmware, it also gives you the choice of whether or not to update your iPhone 4's baseband...

If You Haven’t Already Updated to iOS 4.3.3, You Can’t Anymore

Apple will no longer allow users to update or restore an iOS device to iOS 4.3.3. The signing window for 4.3.3 has been closed, meaning that you can no longer restore a device to 4.3.3 in iTunes without previously saved SHSH blobs from that firmware.

This news is important for jailbreakers that are either considering using JailbreakMe on iOS 4.3.3, or those that may have possibly upgraded to an iOS 5 beta without saving their blobs. The recently released iOS 4.3.4 kills the untethered jailbreak that was previously offered in iOS 4.3.x, so 4.3.3 is the most up to date firmware that offers an untethered jailbreak.

iFaith v1.1 Released

iFaith, the SHSH dumping tool, has received an update and is now available to the public for download.

Up until iFaith came out, if you wanted to restore your device to a previous iOS firmware, the only way to do it was to save the current firmware's SHSH blob using tools such as @notcom's TinyUmbrella or Cydia's 'Make my life easier' function which automatically saved your SHSH blobs to Cydia's server.

If you didn't save the SHSH blob and Apple stopped signing for that iOS then you would not be able to downgrade, as iTunes would stop the process from being completed during the 'Verifying firmware' phase of the restore.

The unique thing with iFaith is that, regardless of what firmware your device is running, iFaith will extract the SHSH blob directly from the device. That way, you'll to be able to restore back to that same firmware in the future, even if Apple is not signing that firmware...
