UltraSn0w iPhone Unlock Updated to Fix Missing Carrier Logo

The Dev Team updated UltraSn0w from 0.91 to 0.92 to fix the missing carrier logo. Those of you who unlocked using PwnageTool + UltraSn0w noticed the disappearance of the carrier logo. While this was just an "aesthetic bug", the core functionality of UltraSn0w (the unlock) was not altered in any way.

A short update was given on the Dev Team blog earlier today:

Today we released an ultrasn0w update that fixes an issue for those running firmware 3.1.2 with the 04.26 baseband.  That specific combination resulted in a missing carrier name in the upper left-hand corner of your home screen.  Today’s ultrasn0w update from 0.91 to 0.92 fixes that problem (which was an important issue for roaming). You should see the update available if you have http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com as a Cydia source.  Enjoy!

According to AIS, the carrier logo has been fixed for the following countries: USA, Thailand, Austria, Trinidad, Germany, China, Kuwait, Serbia, Poland, France, Nigeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Ireland, UK, Turkey, Sweden, Switzerland, Malaysia, Hungary, The Netherlands, Bahamas, Jamaica, India, Israel, Belgium, Canada, Portugal, Denmark, Costa Rica, Italy, Chile and Argentina.

Dev Team Updates PwnageTool for iPhone 3.1.2

Late last night, the Dev Team released PwnageTool 3.1.4 jailbreak for Mac OS X. This updated version of PwnageTool now supports the iPhone and iPod Touch OS 3.1.2. PwnageTool 3.1.4 for OS 3.1.2 comes just a couple days after BlackRa1n, a tool labeled as the "easiest and fastest jailbreak ever", which doesn't come without its share of issues.

What can PwnageTool for OS 3.1.2 do for you?

PwnageTool supports the iPhone 3GS OTB. If you recently bought your iPhone with 3.1.2 or if you updated via iTunes, you will now be able to jailbreak your iPhone PwnageTool will not update your baseband, so if you want to unlock, you have to use PwnageTool. In contrast, BlackRa1n will update your baseband If you jailbroke your iPhone using BlackRa1n, you may install a custom IPSW cooked with PwnageTool (this will fix many issues you may have with BlackRa1n) Updating to a custom 3.1.2 IPSW will kill the tethering hack. If you need tethering, do not update You can jailbreak your iPod Touch 2G only if it was jailbroken before PwnageTool doesn't support the iPod Touch 3G yet PwnageTool is Mac only but you can use a custom firmware cooked with PwnageTool on a windows machine (just make sure you can trust the source) There is no ETA for a Windows tool There is no ETA for a software unlock for the latest baseband

PwnageTool 3.1.4 is available for download from our downloads section.

I will write PwnageTool jailbreak tutorials within the next few hours. For the latest jailbreak info, please visit our jailbreak page.

For more detailed information about the release of PwnageTool 3.1.4 for iPhone OS 3.1.2, please visit the Dev Team blog.

iPhone 3GS 3.1 Jailbreak is Out

It is official! The iPhone 3GS jailbreak for OS 3.1 announced yesterday and confirmed earlier today is out, compliments of the Dev Team.

The iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 - PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box. If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment.

This means that if you updated to 3.1 or if you bought your iPhone 3GS with OS 3.1 already installed, you will not be able to jailbreak. However, if you are on a pwned version of 3.0 or 3.0.1 (either using PwnageTool, RedSn0w, or PurpleRa1n), then you are fine.

Good news for iPod Touch 2G users! PwnageTool will also support this device.

The iPod 2G is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the iPod 2G was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 - PwnageTool does not support the iPod 2G with 3.1 software out of the box.

PwnageTool is for Mac OS X only. There is no Windows version yet but let's hope the Dev Team works on this in the near future.

I will be working on a tutorial and post it on the blog asap. Visit the Dev Team blog for full information on the release.

iPhone 3GS 3.1 Jailbreak & Unlock Confirmed. PwnageTool On Its Way

Dev Team member MuscleNerd confirmed earlier today what we reported yesterday: a jailbreak for iPhone 3GS 3.1 coming soon.

It seems that there is a bit of confusion around this and people aren't sure whether they will be able to jailbreak or unlock their iPhone 3GS.

From what I understand, here is the situation (note that I might be wrong, in which case, please correct me by adding a comment):

if you are still on 3.0 or 3.0.1 and your baseband is still 04.26.08, then there is no problem at all for you. You will be able to jailbreak and unlock by using PwnageTool and creating a custom firmware that will not update your baseband. if your iPhone 3GS is already on 3.1, you won't be able to jailbreak or unlock yet but the Dev Team is working on your case.

As usual in this case, we will be spreading the news as it becomes available.

For the latest information about the iPhone 3GS jailbreak and unlock, please refer to the following articles:

UPDATE: I wrote a tutorial on how to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS 3.1 with PwnageTool.

iPhone 3GS 3.1 Jailbreak Coming Soon

It seems that the Dev Team finally managed to jailbreak OS 3.1 for the iPhone 3GS! Dev Team member cpich3g tweeted the following info earlier today:

3gs 3.0 pwned->3.1 pwned. Props to Musclenerd, Wizdaz and thanks Bumble-Bee & ToddJG for testing. tinyurl.com/y8sr4p3 tinyurl.com/y8z277l

The 2 links take you to screenshots (see image above) showing firmware 3.1 running along with baseband 04.26.08. In other words, it means that they managed to jailbreak 3.1 without updating the baseband, which means that the iPhone 3GS can also be unlocked using UltraSn0w.

So what's next? I guess the Dev Team will write an official post on their blog soon to announce the iPhone 3GS jailbreak for OS 3.1. Then they will most likely release an update of PwnageTool and UltraSn0w.

Of course, I will post more info as it becomes available.

Jailbreak Now Available For 3.1 iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G

The Dev Team just released PwnageTool 3.1 for Mac OS X which will let iPhone 2G/3G and iPod Touch 1G users jailbreak their device. So far, only PwnageTool is available and is for Mac only, but the Dev Team is working on updating RedSn0w for both Mac and PC.

There is still now way to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch 2G and 3G but I assume these will come in the near future.

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. - Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool. This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release. This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

I will post a tutorial soon on how to jailbreak the iPhone 2G and 3G using PwnageTool. Stay tuned! If you can't wait, you may want to have a look at an older tutorial for PwnageTool (files are differents but the tutorial remains the same).

UPDATE: I Just finished writing the iPhone 3G 3.1 tutorial using PwnageTool for Mac OS X.

Dev Team Explains the 3.0.1 Jailbreak & Unlock

The Dev Team posted an official update on their blog about the 3.0.1 jailbreak and unlock. I guess the aim of this post is to clarify a little bit on what to do and how it works.

The 3.0.1 release is a “branch” from 3.0 that occurs (code-wise) before all the 3.1 betas.  The programs redsn0w needs to change for the jailbreak are identical when you compare the 3.0 and 3.0.1 versions.  It seems pretty much the only changes Apple made were for the SMS bug, which affects programs that redsn0w doesn’t touch.  That’s why you can re-use redsn0w 0.8 on 3.0.1 even though it was written for 3.0.

As I explained yesterday, you can still jailbreak your iPhone running 3.0.1 running RedSn0w and pointing it to firmware 3.0. Then, should you want to unlock, simply install UltraSn0w from Cydia if your are on an iphone 3G or 3GS. If you're on a 2G, just use RedSn0w to jailbreak and unlock.

The Dev Team says that they will update RedSn0w at some point so it recognizes firmware 3.0.1 but it will just be "aesthetic" changes, so there is no reason to wait for it.

For more detailed information about jailbreaking and unlocking, I recommend you check out the jailbreak page and the unlock page of this site. It is updated with the latest info.

Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 3.0.1 With RedSn0w

The Dev Team reported that it is safe to update your iPhone to OS 3.0.1. After updating your iPhone to the latest 3.0.1 firmware, you can run the latest version of RedSn0w and point it to firmware 3.0.

Since the 3.0.1 doesn't update the baseband, you will also be able to unlock your iPhone using UltraSn0w via Cydia (for iPhone 3G and 3GS), and you will also be able to run RedSn0w on your iPhone 2G to unlock it by following these steps.

My latest tutorial on how to jailbreak your iPhone using RedSn0w still works and I suggest you check it out if you're not sure on how to update and jailbreak your iPhone.

Note that in order to jailbreak, you will have to update to 3.0.1 in iTunes first, which will remove all your jailbreak apps.

For more detailed information about jailbreaking and unlocking, I recommend you check out the jailbreak page and the unlock page of this site. It is updated with the latest info.

Dev Team Gives UltraTips About Using UltraSn0w Unlock

The last version of UltraSn0w was supposed to fix a number of bugs and overall, it did a great job. However, some people are still having issues. The Dev Team posted an article with a few ultratips for those of you still having problems with your unlock.

Battery draining too fast? It's probably because you restored your iPhone from backup. You should restore your iPhone and set up as a new phone. Issues with T-Mobile? T-Mobile's 3G doesn't work on the iPhone. It's a frequency issue. Simply deactivate 3G in Settings > General > Network

I think these two are the most common issues after unlocking. For more information, I suggest you hop over the Dev Team's blog and read the full article.

Dev Team Says UltraSn0w Is Better Than PurpleSn0w

The friendly fight between the Dev Team and GeoHot keeps going as the Dev Team posted a blog post this morning highlighting how much better than PurpleSn0w UltraSn0w is.

Works on both 3G and 3GS Works on hacktivated devices Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever.  (Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out). Doesn’t install any additional daemon Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition :) Is available now via Cydia.  Source repo is http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com (that last “0” in ultrasn0w is a zero!)

That was the short version... If you want to full geeky version of this, head over the Dev Team's blog. Although PurpleSn0w might not be perfect, the Dev Team used parts and pieces of GeoHot's findings and included them in the latest UltraSn0w 0.9 update (available through Cydia).

What's really better? UltraSn0w or PurpleSn0w?

Honestly, I don't know. I don't need to unlock my iPhone right now so I haven't even tried any of these. If I had to pick one though, I'd choose UltraSn0w. I trust the Dev Team is doing what's best for your iPhone now but also takes into account future updates that might render the unlock impossible. GeoHot on the other hand, seems to be a burning head.

Have you tried UltraSn0w and PurpleSn0w? If so, what do you think?

Tutorial: Jailbreak iPhone 3GS Using RedSn0w

This guide and tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using RedSn0w. After jailbreaking your iPhone 3GS, you will be able to unlock it using UltraSn0w should you want to.

Note that this tutorial is for the iPhone 3GS but the steps are the same for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. Read this for more information about the jailbreak that best fits your needs. This was done on a PC but I assume the steps are the same for Mac and Linux.

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS Guide:

1. First, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer. If you have to update iTunes, make sure you restart your computer after installing the latest iTunes.

2. On your desktop, create a folder called "jailbreak iPhone 3GS" or whatever you want to call it. In this folder, download firmware 3.0 for your iPhone 3GS and RedSn0w 0.8 from here. Unzip the RedSn0w folder.

3. Launch RedSn0w and browse for the 3.0 firmware you downloaded in the previous step. RedSn0w should be processing the chosen firmware and tell you that the IPSW was "successfully identified". Click Next.

4. RedSn0w will start working for a few seconds and then will ask you what you would like to install. You can install Cydia and Icy. I highly suggest you only install Cydia. Choose Cydia and click Next.

5. We'll now have to connect the iPhone 3GS in recovery mode. To do so, unplug it from your computer, turn it off and wait a few seconds. Then hold the home button while plugin your iPhone to the USB cable. Keep holding the home button until the "Connect to iTunes" image appears.

6. Your iPhone will then go into recovery mode and that's when the magic happens... RedSn0w will install the jailbreak, which may take a few minutes.

7. Your iPhone will restart and install a bunch of stuff. . Even though RedSn0w says "Done!", wait until the very end to click "Finish".

8. After a few minutes, your iPhone will restart. Then click "Finish".

9. Go to your iPhone springboard and you should see the Cydia icon. Note that the icon may be on the second or third page on your springboard.

10. Done!

It took me about 10 minutes to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS, including time to take screenshots and write this tutorial. It was from far the quickest and most painless jailbreak.

RedSn0w Jailbreak For iPhone 3GS Is Out

The Dev Team quietly updated RedSn0w to version 0.8, which allows you to jailbreak the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch 2G.

The main features of RedSn0w 0.8 are:

a stable jailbreak (unlike PurpleRa1n) Cydia and Icy are now fully compatible UltraSn0w compatible Mobile Substrate and WinterBoard working well

That's interesting that the Dev Team decided to finally release their iPhone 3GS jailbreak when they said just about a week ago that they wanted to wait for Apple to release 3.1 before making RedSn0w public. I guess they were emulated by the release of PurpleRa1n and needed to prove the iPhone world that they are the original iPhone hackers.

You can get RedSn0w 0.8 from our downloads page and read the RedSn0w iPhone 3GS jailbreak tutorial I wrote.
