Control Center

Stunning iOS 10 concept imagines dark mode, customizable Control Center, Siri in apps and more

MacStories founder and editor Federico Viticci has joined forces with user interface designer Sam Beckett on giving us their take on some of the features that Apple may or may not implement in iOS 10, the next major revision of the mobile operating system powering the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

The stunning renderings and an accompanying video imagine many features that Apple fans have been craving for, such as a brand new dark mode for iOS 10, an updated Control Center which lets you move around and customize the icons, an official Siri app for implementing voice-activated features in third-party apps and more.

QuickCenter brings 3D Touch features to Control Center

Control Center is one of the more useful parts of iOS where you can easily toggle on or off some of your most important features, and where you can access shortcuts to your device's most useful utilitarian apps.

Unfortunately, Apple wasn't thinking three-dimensionally when they launched the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and as a result, Control Center doesn't take advantage of the 3D Touch display. That's where a new jailbreak tweak release called QuickCenter, which can be had from Cydia for $0.99, comes to the rescue.

CCTools: a tweak that offers extensive Control Center customization

Anyone with a jailbreak that might be looking for a way to customize Control Center in-depth might find interest in a new free jailbreak tweak in Cydia as of today called CCTools.

This tweak provides you with a myriad of toggle switch options so you can customize Control Center's appearance, functionality, and more. We'll take you through all of the tweak's options in this review.

iOS 10 concept imagines a customizable Control Center with 3D Touch support, dark mode and more

How will Apple improve upon Control Center in the next major iteration of iOS? Sam Beckett has attempted to imagine tight 3D Touch integration for Control Center in iOS 10, and his concept video does a very fine job at that. It shows off some ideas that Apple could take advantage of in order to allow for greater customization of hardware toggles and app shortcuts in Control Center.

A user could press on toggles to enter the edit mode to rearrange the icons, turn off the toggles they use rarely, add new switches for things such as Low Power Mode and Cellular Data and so forth. In addition, Control Center could benefit from 3D Touch by allowing users to quickly access additional options from the contextual menu for a specific toggle.

‘Seeker’ is a feature-filled extension of Apple’s native audio scrubbing

The music controls from the Lock screen and Control Center leave a lot to be desired, which is why iOS jailbreak tweak developer Ron Thakrar has launched an excellent extension for the music controls.

Dubbed Seeker, this extension for jailbroken devices brings an array of new features to the music controls in the aforementioned interfaces and can be had from Cydia's BigBoss repository for the price of $2.99.

Zentrum offers an omni-interface for accessing multitasking, music controls, system toggles & shortcuts

In iOS, the Control Center and App Switcher interfaces are separate from one another and this means to get to one or another, you have to use a different gesture. It seems like some improvements could be made by merging the two interfaces into one, as we've seen with the popularity of previous jailbreak tweak releases such as Auxo 2 & 3.

A new jailbreak tweak called Zentrum is now available in Cydia's BigBoss repository for $1.99 and it introduces users to an all-new omni-interface for multitasking, viewing music controls, and accessing system toggles & shortcuts, but it even bakes into the mix a quick app launcher, which you can configure to your liking.

This tweak lets you use 3D Touch to measure an object’s weight

3D Touch gives iPhone 6s users tons of new features throughout the iOS operating system out of the box, but that's not keeping the jailbreak community from coming up with incredible new uses for it.

Grams is an incredible new jailbreak tweak being made available in Cydia's BigBoss repository for $0.99 that allows those with an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus to measure the weight of light objects by using the 3D Touch display right from Control Center, and in this piece, we'll take you through a few of the details of how it's able to accomplish this.

iOS 9.3 Night Shift mode to have a Control Center toggle?

Apple's iOS 9.3 beta was seeded to developers and Public Beta program participants last week with some pretty big changes to the mobile operating system. One of the flagship features of the release is the f.lux-like Night Shift mode that will change the display's color temperature depending on the time of day to make using the device easier on the eyes at late evening and night hours.

Music Agent adds shuffle and repeat controls to Control Center and Lock screen music controls

I find it weird that there's no native shuffle or repeat options for music playback to be found in Control Center, but here we are, deep into the feature's existence with no such options to be found.

The same thing can be said about the Lock screen music controls as well. Maybe I'm in the minority when it comes to wishing for these two features, but I use the repeat and shuffle options constantly within the actual Music app. It would be so much more convenient for me to have such buttons readily available within Control Center and from the Lock screen.

For jailbreakers, a new $0.99 jailbreak tweak called Music Agent brings both of these features to iOS. If you're a big fan of the shuffle and repeat music controls, then you'll definitely want to check out this new tweak.

Lylac jailbreak tweak lets you customize your iPhone’s App Switcher

Lylac is a recently released jailbreak tweak that functions as an infusion of Control Center and the iOS App Switcher. Like many tweaks before it, Lylac aims to merge both interfaces together for the sake of convenience.

Along with the merged App Switcher interface, Lylac brings additional menus to the App Switcher for performing resprings, reboots, killing apps, and other similar tasks. The tweak also allows users to change the App Switcher layout, and alter the look of the interface using tint and blur value changes.
