Google dropping Exchange ActiveSync support for Gmail next month

Brace yourselves, Gmail account syncing is about to get a lot less convenient for iOS and other non-Android devices. The Mountain View company just announced that as part of its 'Winter Cleaning' initiative, it will be ditching support for the Exchange ActiveSync protocol next month.

What's Exchange ActiveSync? Well it's an XML-based protocol, developed by Microsoft, that allows the synchronization of email, calendar, contacts, and other data between servers and mobile devices. And at this point, it's the only way to get native Gmail push notifications on your iPhone...

As promised, Flexibits today launched Fantastical for the iPhone. The app makes a leap from the Mac, where it's been deemed the most popular calendar software for the platform. Two more great apps are making a jump from the Mac to the iOS platform and vice versa. Clear, a simplified and lively personal to-do list which debuted on the iPhone, is now available for the Mac, bringing with it gestures-based interface and classy animations the iOS version is known for.

Fantastical, an awesome calendar and to-do list Mac app, is hitting iOS soon. Neither program feels like a dumbified port, which is a good thing, but what both of these apps are truly about is tight iCloud integration which makes possible smooth, worry-free experience that just works...

Major Exchange bug spotted in iOS 6

Since its release two weeks ago, Apple has taken an enormous amount of criticism over iOS 6. The bulk of the heat has come over the new, so-called inferior Maps application, but there have also been complaints of Wi-Fi and App Store issues.

In fact, according to a new report today, some major companies are urging their employees not to update their iOS devices to the new firmware. But it's not because of Maps or Wi-Fi problems. It has to do with a major Exchange bug...

Today's a bad, bad day for LinkedIn and a field day for privacy advocates around the world as someone has just managed to leak over 6.5 million hashed and encrypted LinkedIn passwords on a Russian hacker forum.

On top of that, the LinkedIn for iOS app, which was recently updated with iPad support, has an opt-in feature that lets you synchronize your iOS calendar to view upcoming events inside the app.

One feature that didn't make its way into iOS 5, but may soon appear in the App Store, is an Apple app for movie-goers. A newly discovered patent published by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office today illustrates an iOS application that could make it easier than ever to browse movie showtimes and buy tickets on your iPhone.

The app will also provide a link to Apple's iTunes Movie Trailers service, which will allow users to watch trailers and view additional information on movies they're interested in. However, that's not the most impressive feature...

This little trick has been around for quite some time. But if you are a new iPhone user, or plan on becoming a new iPad user soon, listen up! If you are using Google's email service, then there's a good chance you are using Google's calendar and their contact management system. This holds especially true for you, former Android users, who are forced to use the previously mentioned services by design.

Now I know you're thinking, "Cody, I already have my Gmail setup on my iPhone," and you're probably right. But if you set it up as an actual Gmail account and not under the 'Exchange' account profile, you might be missing out on some cool features.
