Fix: Black Screen of Death after installing nitoTV on jailbroken Apple TV 4

I was trying to boot up my jailbroken Apple TV a few days ago when I suddenly got hit by the Black Screen of Death. It's something I had seen mentioned online before, but not experienced myself, so I was a little taken aback.

Conveniently enough, since I was communicating with nitoTV developer Kevin Bradley for the purpose of our podcast, I asked him if he had a quick fix for the issue, which he kindly offered.

A quick overview of nitoTV for Apple TV 4

Kevin Bradley just released an update to nitoTV a few hours ago, and we've already showed you guys how to install it once your Apple TV is jailbroken. Now Andrew took nitoTV for a quick spin and briefly walks you through some of the things you can install.

If you've been around the jailbreak community for a few years, you are probably familiar with nitoTV for Apple TV, the installer that gained popularity back in the days of the Apple TV 2. Things had become a little uneventful for a few years due to the lack of a jailbreak for Apple TV, but now that things have changed, nitoTV developer Kevin Bradley is back at it with an updated version of the popular installer.

In this post, we'll show you how to install nitoTV on your jailbroken Apple TV.

How to jailbreak the new Apple TV using Pangu

Now that the Pangu Team has released their jailbreak for the new Apple TV, we have had some hands-on time with the tool and were successful in jailbreaking our own test device. In this post, we will share detailed step by step instructions on how to jailbreak the new Apple TV using Pangu. Before we get started, we must share a few words of caution.

Pangu Team releases Apple TV jailbreak

Following up on their promise, the Pangu Team has now released a jailbreak for the fourth-generation Apple TV. The tool can be downloaded from our Downloads page and instructions on how to use it will soon be available on iDB.

It must be noted that this jailbreak tool comes with strings attached. As the Pangu Team had warned, this jailbreak is more geared towards security researchers and developers. End users will see no real value in this jailbreak, at least for the time being.

Pangu to release the first jailbreak for the new Apple TV next week

Hot on the heels of their surprising iOS 9.1 jailbreak announcement Friday morning, the Pangu Team has now announced on Twitter that they will be releasing a jailbreak for Apple TV 4 running tvOS 9.0 or 9.0.1 next week.

Although the team notes that this jailbreak will only provide SSH access (no UI) and be geared towards security researchers and jailbreak developers, this is still an incredible piece of news.

How to jailbreak iOS 5.3 on the Apple TV 2 untethered

At iDB, we've been singing the praises of the Apple TV for years, especially one of the jailbroken variety. With a jailbroken Apple TV 2, you can do tons of cool stuff, like run XBMC, ATV Flash (black), and loads of other interesting apps and tweaks.

Simply put, the Apple TV hardware in and of itself is good, but jailbreaking the Apple TV 2 sends its value through the roof. Yesterday, FireCore, the creators of the Seas0nPass Apple TV jailbreak tool, released an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.3 thanks to some help from winocm and iH8sn0w. Check inside for the full video walkthrough that shows how to jailbreak your Apple TV 2 untethered.

Seas0nPass jailbreak tool updated for Apple TV 2 firmware 5.3

Good news for Apple TV 2 owners who haven't updated to 6.0 yet. FireCore has updated its Seas0nPass utility to apply an untethered jailbreak to ATVs that are still running firmware version 5.3—which is essentially the equivalent of iOS 6.1.4.

The tool has, for a long time, been able to apply a tethered jailbreak to the 5.3 software. But thanks to recent developments in the community, it's now capable of an untethered hack, which means restarts and power up/downs will be hassle-free...

p0sixspwn updated with fixes for iMessage, LTE and Apple TV 2 support

For those that missed it this morning, p0sixspwn was updated to fix a few major bugs from the previous release. The untethered jailbreak, released for devices on iOS 6.1.3-6.1.5 by winocm and iH8Sn0w, should no longer create issues with iMessage or LTE.

Interestingly enough, the update also adds support for the Apple TV 2 (still no Apple TV 3). So while I don't think you can use it to directly jailbreak the set-top box, it shouldn't be too long before a utility like Seas0nPass takes advantage of the new capability...
