Project Titan pivots, again: Apple Car will restrict self-driving features to highways

Is Apple working on an electric car? Probably. Project Titan has been rumored for so long now that if Apple does eventually unveil a car of some kind, it will inevitably result in an, "About time" response from a lot of people. Until then, though, we've got reports of people getting hired by Apple to work on the fabled machine.
Work on an Apple Car autopilot chip module and other custom chips should be completed in 2023 after having been underway for almost a year.
Apple will allegedly select the main Apple Car manufacturer by the end of 2022, with South Korean suppliers apparently already vying to provide parts.
What, exactly, is the Apple Car? Is it an actual vehicle that consumers will be able to buy one day? Was it that, at some point, but has ultimately transformed into something else -- like a fleet of autonomous vehicles meant to ferry employees? Or is it a fully autonomous, consumer-focused vehicle meant to get you and your family to where you need to go? None of these? Who knows!
Since all we have to work with is the rumor mill and the stories that come out of it, it sure does seem like nothing about developing the Apple Car has been easy for Apple. We already know the project has been in development for years, which in itself is not a red flag (most projects of any size take years to develop). But we also know that it has changed quite a bit over time, too, with Apple at point even considering not launching a physical car at all, and focusing solely on software inside. But, as of right now, it appears that Apple is still planning to launch an actual consumer-ready automobile at some point, even as the speed bumps keep lining up.
Apple appears to be making some big moves regarding the Apple Car. Does that mean we're getting closer to an actual launch? Sort of. But we're probably still years away from the project becoming a reality. And now it turns out the project has a new lead.
The Apple Car effort has seen a lot of ups and downs over the years. Especially for a project that's not, technically, an official product. But that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from showing us both the positives and the negatives Apple has faced. And today is no different.
Work on the Apple Car, under Project Titan, continues. But today's news isn't so much on the positive side of things. At least, not for Apple.
There was a time, not so long ago, where the rumor mill was dedicated to doling out information regarding Project Titan. Not all of it was good news. However, the general consensus at the time was Apple hadn't given up on its Apple Car. And here we are with yet another sign that's the case.
With Apple Car production reportedly starting in 2024, company executives are understood to be touring suppliers across Japan and Korea to secure components amid global shortages.
Kevin Lynch is Vice President of Technology at Apple, a major role that has been mostly tied to the Apple Watch. Over the course of many years, Lynch has spearheaded many of the health-related elements of the Apple Watch, and, even demonstrated them on stage at WWDC. But now his attention will reportedly be turned to another Apple-branded product.
