App Switcher

Springshot: add a slingshot effect to the app switcher

Whenever I see one of Adam Bell's tweaks hit Cydia I get excited, because I know it's going to be something innovative and/or fun to use. And Adam didn't disappoint with his latest release, which is appropriately titled Springshot.

Springshot is a jailbreak tweak that allows you to pull down on the app switcher cards to dismiss apps using a slingshot effect. The WebOS inspired tweak is available free of charge from Cydia's BigBoss repo. Have a look at our video walkthrough inside to see what Springshot is all about.

GridSwitcher: show the iOS 7 app switcher in a grid view

GridSwitcher is an upcoming jailbreak tweak that allows you to display the iOS 7 app switcher in a grid-based view. Most notably, you still retain the same app switcher functionality of the standard app switcher while in grid view.

At this point in the tweak's life, there are no options to configure how it works, just install it and start using it. Have a look at our video walkthrough of the tweak after the break.

SwitcherBlur: blur the apps in the app switcher

SwitcherBlur is a recently released tweak that does one very simple thing: it adds blur to the app cards in the iOS 7 app switcher. SwitcherBlur uses a simple low-level gaussian blur on all of the app cards, except for the app that you just came from. The tweak is similar to BioLockdown, in that you can protect the contents of your app switcher cards from prying eyes.

But that's about where the comparisons to the feature-rich BioLockdown end. SwitcherBlur prides itself on simplicity, as you'll see in our brief video walkthrough inside.

SlideForUsage: swipe down on the pages in the app switcher for usage info

The app switcher in iOS 7 allows you to swipe up on the pages listed there to kill the apps using a simple gesture. Swiping down on the app pages results in a simple rubber banding animation that has no effect on the application associated with the page.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could garner some extra functionality from swiping down on pages within the app switcher? That's the basic premise behind SlideForUsage; it allows you to view basic usage statistics for the apps listed in the app switcher. Have a look at our video walkthrough inside.

Animer7: add animations to banner notifications and the app switcher in iOS 7

Animer7 is brand new release that just appeared in Cydia's BigBoss repo a few minutes ago. It's a tweak that allows you to customize the way animations work for banner notifications and the app switcher.

As denoted by the digit in its name, Animer7 is the sequel of sorts to the original Animer; it's been updated to work with iOS 7. And there's some good news for users who purchased the previous version of the tweak: Animer7 is available as a free upgrade. For more information on how Animer7 works, be sure to have a look at our full video walkthrough after the jump.

Preview: ClassicSwitcher

ClassicSwitcher is an upcoming jailbreak tweak that brings the old school app switcher to iOS 7. I firmly believe that a lot of jailbreakers out there are going to love this tweak.

Not only does it bring the old school switcher functionality to iOS 7, but it brings along with it several goodies as well. We've taken ClassicSwitcher for a spin on video, take a look inside for our exclusive hands-on sneak peak.

How to turn the iOS 7 app switcher into a musical instrument

Every so often, a jailbreak tweak is released on Cydia that does something completely different. These tweaks usually have no real benefit other than the fact that they do something weird or obscure.

MusicalSwitcher is one of those tweaks that fits the aforementioned description to a tee. It has no real benefit, but it allows you to use your app switcher pages as if they were keys on a piano. You're just going to have to watch this video to see what I mean.

How to type in an app while the app switcher is open

As we covered in an earlier tutorial, the app switcher in iOS 7 provides the ability to do some pretty cool things that you could never do in previous firmware.

For starters, there’s the ability to use swipe gestures to kill apps — even multiple apps at the same time by using more than one finger. Next, you have the ability to see what’s going on in each of the running apps, courtesy of the switcher’s new full screen app snapshots.

One of the positive side effects of this new app switcher view are the “multitasking” possibilities that stem out of it. First, let me clear the air and state the obvious — this isn’t true multitasking; but as we showed you already, by thinking outside of the box, you can stretch the app switcher’s abilities to meet your needs.

One such need was stumbled upon by reader Matthew Seltzer. After watching our initial app switcher tutorial, he discovered a handy way to get even more out it. If you happen to have a Bluetooth keyboard connected to your iPad, you can take advantage of the last app’s focus in order to continue to type while the app switcher is open.

Getting more from the iOS 7 app switcher

The iOS 7 app switcher is a significant departure from the previous way that app switching worked in iOS. Apple’s latest and greatest mobile operating system ditched the small app switcher that appeared near the bottom of the screen in favor of a more front and center app switching mechanism.

I don’t think you’ll find a single person out there that agrees that this new way is inferior to the app switching ways of old. Not only do we now have full screen previews of our running apps, we can also choose to eliminate them by means of a simple swipe up gesture.

But outside of the mere aesthetic appeal of the new interface, there’s more to be gained in day-to-day usage. Inside, you’ll find a couple of my favorite new, largely obvious, uses for the new app switcher.

Reminisce: the best way to switch between recently used apps

It's one of the best jailbreak tweaks that we've seen this month, and it's now available for you to download on Cydia's BigBoss repo. I'm talking about Reminisce, the jailbreak tweak that lets users quickly switch between their most recently used apps, and unless you've been living under a rock, you're fully aware of what tweak I'm referring to.

We previewed Reminisce last week, lending a glimpse of what you can expect once the tweak went live on Cydia. Now that it's officially live and available to purchase, let's step through a few of the other features found in this big time Cydia release.

Preview: Auxo’s new Slim Mode

If you know me, then you know that I love Auxo; it's one of my favorite jailbreak tweaks and I use it on my daily driver. Auxo is great, because it offers a redesigned app switcher, toggles, and the ability to easily kill apps using gestures. Perhaps the biggest feature of Auxo is its ability to present full previews of apps in the app switcher.

While most users enjoy the privilege of having full app previews, due to the ability to gain context as to what's running on the device, some have balked at the feature. Their beef stems from the fact that the app switcher takes up too much space with Auxo installed, or that it's difficult to quickly identify what's running. Well, folks; the creators behind Auxo have a solution to what ails you. Introducing Auxo's brand new Slim Mode.

A hands-on look at iOS 7 on the iPad

iOS 7 beta 2 is the first iOS 7 to feature support for Apple's iconic tablet, and we've got a hands-on demonstration of how it looks and feels. The first word that came to my mind when I initially fired up iOS 7 on the iPad was “modern.” The iPad feels more spacious, and lightweight with iOS 7 installed. Whereas iOS 6 felt heavy and weighed down by skeuomorphism, iOS 7 feels light free.

I think you're going to like the way that iOS 7 looks and performs on the iPad. Check out our full video demonstration inside...
