Why Apple dumped Yahoo for The Weather Channel to power weather data in iOS 8

Apple announced several new flagship features in iOS 8 at its WWDC keynote a few weeks ago, but one of the quiet changes uncovered was that Yahoo has been replaced by The Weather Channel for weather data. The move came as a bit of a surprise, given that Yahoo has been aggressively pushing to have more of its services integrated across the iPhone software platform.

So, why did Apple make the switch? Interestingly enough, Yahoo weather services have actually been powered by The Weather Channel for quite some time. By cutting the middleman out of the equation, the iPhone maker benefits from more specific weather data and technologies that The Weather Channel did not provide to Yahoo…

Evidence discovered in iOS 8 suggests iPhone 6 will feature multiple new sensors

The incoming iPhone 6 may feature new barometer and air pressure sensors, according to a report from 9to5Mac. The site has discovered new APIs in iOS 8 that hint at the new sensors, which could be used to offer advanced data for measuring altitude, temperature and weather.

Today's discovery follows a March report from Sun Chang Xu. Citing sources familiar with Apple's plans, the analyst said the iPhone 6 would include new sensors for measuring air pressure, temperature and humidity, putting the device on par with Samsung's Galaxy S5 and others...

If you're a fan of weather apps, you're going to love the minor but welcomed changes Apple has made to its stock Weather software in iOS 8. In addition to replacing Yahoo with Weather Channel for weather data, the stock iOS 8 Weather app now finally gives you a 10-day forecast as opposed to the current five-day forecast in iOS 7.

Moreover, it's now easier to get an at-a-glance overview of daily weather conditions right inside the Weather app...

Yahoo replaced by The Weather Channel for weather data in iOS 8

Last year, The Wall Street Journal reported that Yahoo was in talks with Apple over increasing its presence on the iPhone. The company wanted more of its content pre-loaded onto Apple's devices, and was after the default search spot in Safari.

But its quest to expand its reach in iOS isn't going so well. Apple released the first beta of iOS 8 to developers yesterday, and it's been discovered that the Weather app, which used to pull info from Yahoo, now uses data from The Weather Channel...

iOS 7: the ultimate Weather app guide

The stock Weather app is a simple pre-installed application that utilizes weather data from Yahoo. The Weather app makes it easy to quickly view weather conditions and forecasts for a variety of locations at once. It feature location awareness, meaning it can dynamically update to reflect weather conditions in your current area, even when jet-setting across the country or the world.

The Weather app isn't the most robust or feature-filled app on the block, but it's good enough to get you by in a pinch. Have a look as we walk through each of the features available in this stock application.

The Weather Channel app updated with all-new iOS 7 design

The Weather Channel app has long been a favorite for iOS users. It provides fast, accurate information, and offers tons of features for the more serious weather watchers. In fact, the only complaint I've ever really heard about the app had to do with its decidedly dated design.

That changed this morning, though, as the app was updated with an all-new iOS 7-inspired look. It now features rounded, translucent UI elements and larger, sharper graphics. Users will also notice that the app is much faster thanks to a number of performance improvements...

Yahoo updates Weather app with new animations, pull-to-refresh for photos and more

The reinvigorated Yahoo has updated its gorgeous Weather application for the iPhone and iPad, available free of charge in the App Store, with some noteworthy visual enhancements and feature improvements.

I've always absolutely loved how the app presents full-bleed photographs of chosen location(s), sourced from the Flickr community.

But, there was no way to browse through different photos of the same location. Starting today, you can now simply pull down on the image to load a new one, when possible. Another enhancements, straight from the design department: new animations for moon phases available as you scroll through details...

ClearWeather HD brings minimalist weather to the iPad

I’ve gotten a kick out of the fun, simple weather apps that have launched in the App Store since iOS 7 made its debut. Some look like rocket pops. Some look like a graph. Some have almost no information other than the weather. What most of them are seriously lacking, however, is iPad optimization.

ClearWeather HD is a minimalist weather app that shows off your iPad with bright colors, clean lines, and a simple interface and will make your co-workers turn their head…
