Cydia Installer updated to version 1.1.16 to fix bugs with iTunes backup restores and more

Once again, Saurik has pushed an update for Cydia Installer. This update provides several important bug fixes that makes it a must-update for anyone who is currently jailbroken.

In this update, you'll find a bug fix for the previous Cydia releases related to iTunes backup restores, iOS 8 multitasking timeouts, App Store redirects, and more. Check out the full change log after the break.

Cydia Installer updated to 1.1.15 to fix bugs, removes landscape mode from unsupported devices

For those of you who were excited about the landscape mode in Cydia, I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that landscape mode works gloriously on iPads and the iPhone 6 Plus. The bad news is that landscape mode has been removed from all other devices.

Landscape inclusion in unsupported devices was apparently a bug, not a feature, and Saurik has fixed it accordingly with Cydia Installer 1.1.15. But that's not all the latest installer fixes, check inside for the full change log.

Cydia Installer updated to 1.1.14 to fix passcode issue, adds multitasking, iPhone 6 support, and much more

Ladies and gentlemen, the moment you've been waiting for. Cydia Installer just received a 1.1.14 update to fix the lingering passcode issue. You can now update Cydia on your jailbroken iOS 8 device and use a passcode without any side effects.

More impressively, perhaps, is the introduction of new multitasking capability! Yes, true multitasking with Cydia is finally here if you're jailbroken with iOS 8. Amazing.

Then, there's support for the iPhone 6 Plus! That includes rotation support.

Watch our video walkthrough inside for an overview of the new changes, and then head over to Cydia right now and install the update if you're jailbroken. If you're not jailbroken, follow our tutorial inside to jailbreak and install Cydia.

Cydia Substrate updated yet again, this time fixing bugs with OpenSSH and other processes

As expected, Saurik continues to work tirelessly on Cydia and all of its parts, including the uber-important Cydia Substrate. The latest update, which rings in at version 0.9.5015 comes mere hours after the 0.9.5014 update.

While the previous update aimed to squash many festering bugs, and did so successfully, it also introduced another bug which caused some process, like OpenSSH, not to start. Obviously this was a huge issue that needed to be fixed quick, since OpenSSH is used by lots of jailbreakers as a means to communicate with their jailbroken devices and to transfer files. As expected, Saurik responded accordingly.

Cydia Substrate updated to fix app installation issues, iTunes syncing bugs, and more

If you're jailbroken on iOS 8 and you have Cydia installed, you should check for a new version of Substrate that just went live.

Cydia Substrate 0.9.5014 comes right on the heels of the Pangu team's 0.2 Untether update for iOS 8. Both Pangu and Saurik are working around the clock to shore up as many bugs and issues as possible related to the jailbreak and subsequent Cydia support.

Saurik brings AFC2 support to iOS 8

For those of you who prefer to manage iOS's file system via USB, we have some good news for you. Saurik recently pushed an AFC packaged called Apple File Conduit 2 to jailbroken iOS 8 users. The package, which is downloadable from Cydia right now, allows users to browse the entire iOS root file system when your device is connected to your computer via USB.

Cydia Substrate updated to 0.9.5013 to support iOS 8

Good news, fellow jailbreakers. Saurik has just pushed an update to Cydia Substrate to lend it iOS 8 compatibility. This means that tweaks that rely on Cydia Substrate to run (most of them should) can now be updated to work with iOS 8 as well.

Cydia Substrate has always been a big part of the puzzle that needed to be there for this iOS 8 jailbreak to really gain steam as far as jailbreak apps and tweaks are concerned. If you're already jailbroken and have Cydia installed, then Cydia Substrate 0.9.5013 should appear as an update in Cydia.

Saurik on competition and community

Every once in a while, a group of individuals surfaces to offer a new "Cydia alternative." Full of good intentions, these individuals usually realize quickly enough that building a replacement or even a complement to Cydia isn't an easy task.

The latest Cydia alternative to generate interest within the community is iMods, an elegant installer that doesn't necessarily aim to take on Cydia, but rather target a different user base, as one of its developer explains. The concept, both in terms of design and engineering sounds promising, but is it viable?

Does it even make sense to try to bring a new installer to market? What does it take to do so, and what hurdles should the developers of such a tool be ready to face? These are some questions that Saurik tries to answer in a 5,600 word essay...

JailbreakCon 2014: behind the scene

As I am trying to write a catchy intro for this post, I can’t help but feel the pressure. I’m feeling the pressure mainly because I wrote a similar piece a couple of years ago when I first attended JailbreakCon. To date, this post is still one of my favorites I have published on iDB. Having set the bar pretty high, this sequel could prove to be like most sequels: uninspired and thrown out there to cash in on a previous success. This is a risk I am willing to take today.

Maybe more importantly, I am feeling the pressure because I don’t want to disappoint readers by writing the same story I wrote a couple years ago. I guess I’m feeling like a musician that is incapable of finding a different sound for his next album, you know, kinda like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Sometimes it’s good to keep the same sound. Sometimes it gets repetitive and boring. Hopefully, this time will still feel as refreshingly honest as it did the first time, while still entertaining readers, which really is my ultimate goal.

Yes, my goal is not so much to tell you about all the great workshops and talks I attended at JailbreakCon this year. My goal is to share the other side of the story. The side that no one not attending the event would be able to experience if it wasn’t for the words I’m typing on the keyboard right now. Let’s call it the behind the scene story of JailbreakCon.

So this is me, sharing my story of JailbreakCon 2014. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed living it…

Saurik lists the jailbreak tweaks he has installed on his iPhone

Since we closely cover the jailbreak community here at iDB, we are often asked by readers what apps and tweaks we have installed. Between us, we probably try a dozen new tweaks a week, or more, so sometimes we have stuff on our devices that others may not know about.

With that in mind, you can only imagine how often Saurik, the founder of Cydia, gets asked what packages he has installed on his device. Well for those of you wondering, he answered the question last night in a Reddit thread and his list of tweaks is actually pretty interesting...
