How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G iOS 4.1 with RedSn0w

This step by step guide and tutorial will show you how to use RedSn0w 0.9.6 Beta 1 to jailbreak your iPhone 3G iOS 4.1. So far, this only works for the iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch 2G, and is a Mac only tool (although a Windows version is coming).

Before we start the tutorial, make sure you read and understand this. Once you have read this article through, come back here and let's work on jailbreaking your iPhone 3G iOS 4.1 with RedSn0w...

RedSn0w 0.9.6 Beta 1 Jailbreak for iPhone 3G IOS 4.1 Released

The Dev Team released RedSn0w 0.9.6 Beta 1 a few hours ago. This latest update to the popular jailbreak tool will only work with the iPhone 3G iOS 4.1 and iPod Touch 2G.

According to the Dev Team, RedSn0w 0.9.6 Beta 1 uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that has been around for a couple years. It does not use the SHAtter exploit discovered by pod2g, so there is nothing really new here...

About the iPhone iOS 4.1 Jailbreak

The Dev Team recently confirmed there will not be a jailbreak for iOS 4.0.2 because iOS 4.1 is right around the corner and really, it would be a waste of time, but most importantly, a waste of exploit. This being said, I bet our favorite team of hackers is currently working hard on the iOS 4.1 beta release, trying to find a hole in there.

Jailbreak & Unlock iOS 4.0.2 on iPhone 3G

Those of you who own an iPhone 3G or an iPod Touch 2G (non-MC model) can jailbreak/unlock iOS 4.0.2. To jailbreak your iPhone 3G 4.0.2, you will have to use RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4.0.2

Step 1: Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed (iTunes 9.2).

Step 2: Download iOS 4 (not iOS 4.0.2) for iPhone 3G to your desktop from our iPhone downloads section.

Step 3: Update your iPhone to iOS 4.0.2 via iTunes.

Step 4: Download the latest version of RedSn0w from here.

Step 5: Point RedSn0w to the iOS 4 (not 4.0.2) you downloaded in step 2.

Step 6: Select “Install Cydia”.

Step 7: Follow the onscreen instructions.

Step 8: Let RedSn0w do the hard work for you. Once jailbroken, your iPhone will reboot.

How to Unlock iPhone 3G iOS 4.0.2

Since iOS 4.0.2 didn't update the iPhone baseband, you can still use UltraSn0w to unlock your iPhone.

Step 1: Jailbreak your iPhone using the method described above.

Step 2: Go to Cydia and search for UltraSn0w. If it’s not there, you might have to add the following repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com

Step 3: Install UltraSn0w.

Step 4: Reboot your iPhone.

iOS 4.1 Beta 2 Can Jailbroken With RedSn0w

iOS 4.1 Beta 2 was released yesterday and according to MuscleNerd, you can already jailbreak it using RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5. If you're not a developer, you shouldn't mess around iOS 4.1 Beta 2 but I'm sure some of you won't resist the temptation.

If you've updated to 4.1 beta2 on iPhone 3G or iPod 2G (non-MC), you can use RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5 to jailbreak. Just point RedSn0w at the official 4.0 IPSW, even though you are on 4.1 Beta 2.

This will not hacktivate your iPhone so make sure you are on an official carrier. If you rely on an unlock, do not do this. Do not get anywhere near iOS 4.1 Beta for that matter.

MuscleNerd notes that you may experience network problems after jailbreaking iOS 4.1 Beta 2. This will be a problem until the Dev Team updates RedSn0w.

Again, proceed at your own risks...

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4.0.1 with RedSn0w

iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone was released a few hours ago and those of you who have an iPhone 3G are already able to update and jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 using RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5. Note that RedSn0w will jailbreak the iPhone 3G only. At this time, there is no jailbreak for other devices on iOS 4.0.1, which is why you should not update if you rely on your jailbreak.

Instructions to jailbreak your iPhone iOS 4.0.1 with RedSn0w remain the same except you must update to iOS 4.0.1 and point RedSn0w at the 4.0 IPSW even though you're at 4.0.1.

The Dev Team and Comex are expected to release an update to Spirit sometimes soon. This new version of Spirit will most likely jailbreak all devices on 4.0.1.

Stay tuned for more info!

How to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 Beta

The iOS SDK 4.1 beta was just seeded to developers a few hours ago and believe it or not, you can already jailbreak it. The Dev Team didn't even have to do any work on the now famous RedSn0w as the 0.9.5b5-5 version can jailbreak iOS 4.1 beta.

Instructions to jailbreak your iPhone iOS 4 with RedSn0w remain the same. However, remember this is still a beta version. To date, this version of RedSn0w is only compatible with the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (non MC models).

Also remember that iOS 4.1 beta is called "beta" for a reason. It is released for developers and the general public should stay away from it.

RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5 Fixes MMS/APN Issue After iOS 4 Jailbreak

The Dev Team just released RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5. This updated version of the popular jailbreak tool will fix the MMS and APN issues that many users encountered after jailbreaking their iPhone with RedSn0w.

According to the Dev Team, it's safe to re-run RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5 on an iPhone that was previously jailbroken with RedSn0w without restoring. Simply deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that.

Instructions to jailbreak your iPhone iOS 4 with RedSn0w remain the same. However, remember this is still a beta version. To date, this version of RedSn0w is only compatible with the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (non MC models). If you want to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS on iOS 4, you will have to use PwnageTool.

After jailbreaking your iPhone with either RedSn0w or PwnageTool, you can unlock it using the latest version of UltraSn0w.

You can download the latest version of RedSn0w from our iPhone downloads section.

Jailbreak iPhone 3G on iOS 4 With RedSn0w

You can now jailbreak your iPhone 3G running iOS 4 using RedSn0w.  This version of RedSn0w will only jailbreak the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G.

At the time being the only way to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS on iOS 4 is to use PwnageTool. RedSn0w should be updated soon to jailbreak both the iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4, so be patient.

According to the Dev Team, "For now, the redsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today’s 4.0. It’s still a beta, so you’ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w."

This being said jailbreaking the iPhone 3G iOS 4 with RedSn0w is fairly simple. These instructions are to jailbreak the iPhone 3G iOS 4 using RedSn0w. Instructions are the same to jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4

Step 1: Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed (iTunes 9.2).

Step 2: Download iOS 4 for iPhone 3G to your desktop from our iPhone downloads section.

Step 3: Update your iPhone to iOS 4 via iTunes.

Step 4: Download the latest version of RedSn0w from here.

Step 5: Point RedSn0w to the iOS 4 you downloaded in step 2.

Step 6: Select "Install Cydia".

Step 7: Follow the onscreen instructions.

Step 8: Let RedSn0w do the hard work for you. Once jailbroken, your iPhone will reboot.

That's it!

Now as mentioned above, this is just a beta release of RedSn0w, which means you might have a few issues. One of the most common issues is that the Cydia icon appears all white. In order to fix this, simply add the following repo to Cydia and reboot your iPhone: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7.

If needed, you may now unlock your iPhone 3G running iOS 4 by following these simple instructions.

Dev Team Releases RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-2

The Dev Team just updated RedSn0w to version 0.9.5b5-2 which adds option for battery percentage and verbose boot mode. It also lets you individually select whether multitasking and homescreen wallpaper are enabled.

RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-2 is probably as close as we'll get to the official release of this jailbreak tool.

The RedSn0w beta is still only for 4.0GM on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (non-MC version). You should not use the beta if you use yellowsn0w/ultrasn0w/blacksn0w!

RedSn0w 0.9.5 iPhone Jailbreak Now Available for Windows

The Dev Team just released RedSn0w 0.9.5 for iOS 4GM for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (non-MC version). This RedSn0w jailbreak now brings support for Windows.

According to the Dev Team:

Just like our other betas, this one intentionally doesn't “hactivate” the iPhone. Please wait for Apple's public release of 4.0 for that part of it.

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That's because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta1/beta4/GM IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you've already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.

Dev Team Releases Redsn0w 0.9.5b4 Jailbreak for iPhone OS 4 Beta 4

RedSn0w has been updated to version 0.9.5b4 by the Dev Team for the recent iPhone OS 4 beta 4. This beta release of RedSn0w is not for casual iPhone users. It is aimed at developers of jailbreak apps so they can update their applications to work on OS 4.

RedSn0w 0.9.5b4 jailbreak for iPhone OS 4 beta 4 uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that has been using since OS 2.X, so nothing has been revealed to Apple.

Because this version is for iPhone OS 4 beta 1-4 which contain a baseband update, anyone who's remotely interested in unlocking should stay away from the OS 4 betas or even this version of RedSn0w.
