Multitasking

Enable Split View and Slide Over features on unsupported devices with this tweak

Slide Over and Split View are two amazing features of iOS, but Apple has limited them to a select few iPads for what they call, “performance restraints.”

As we all know, many of Apple’s other devices are capable of utilizing these features too, so a new jailbreak tweak called Gorgone by CydiaGeek unlocks the features on any previously-unsupported devices, so long as they’re jailbroken of course.

ForceInPicture enables Picture in Picture mode on unsupported devices

Picture in Picture mode is a type of multitasking that was introduced with iOS 9 so you could complete other tasks while simultaneously watching video. Unfortunately those with iPhones, iPod touches, and even some models of iPad can’t use it because it's restricted to certain models of iPad only.

A new jailbreak tweak called ForceInPicture is now available in Cydia that will enable Picture in Picture mode on all unsupported devices, so long as you’re running iOS 9 or iOS 10 on them.

This Mac app lets you switch between recently used apps via Touch Bar

With all of the time-saving shortcuts available for Apple's stock apps on the Touch Bar, you'd think Apple would have brought the macOS app switcher to the the new MacBook Pro's OLED strip. That's why developer Maxim Ananov set out to create an app, called TouchSwitcher, which does just that. With TouchSwitcher, you can switch between your recently-used apps on the new MacBook Pro right from the Touch Bar.

If Apple brought dark mode and Split View multitasking to iPhone 7

I've been a huge fan of OS X's dark theme which debuted with the release of OS X Yosemite back in October 2014. I also like to multitask on my iPad using OS 9's new Split View and Slide Over modes because they definitely increase productivity for me. But how cool would it be if Apple brought Split View to the iPhone 7 and OS X's dark mode to iOS 10?

A detailed conceptual renderings, created by Brazilian magazine iHelpBR imagine precisely this future playing out.

ASBlur increases iOS 9 App Switcher privacy by blurring app previews

You probably use the App Switcher a lot throughout your day-to-day iPhone usage. It's an essential part of multitasking because it lets you easily get back to the apps you've used recently.

On the other hand, it also takes a screenshot of your last activity in the apps you closed recently, so it's a privacy hazard because anyone can peek over your shoulder to see what you've done recently when you're switching between recently-used apps.

ASBlur is a new free jailbreak tweak that helps solve this problem by blurring the contents of your App Switcher app previews.

Apple barred from using the term Split View in India over alleged trademark infringement

iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan have brought out several new multitasking modes on compatible iPads and Macs, including a split-screen feature referred to as Split View. That term is now under fire by the Delhi High Court which has ordered Apple to stop actively using and marketing Split View in India over an alleged trademark infringement.

The infringement claim was filed by a company called Vyooh, a Microsoft vendor, which owns the trademark for the name ‘SplitView’, reports The Indian Times.

Viber gains more 3D Touch goodies, Split View and Slide Over multitasking on iPad Pro and other perks

Viber, the popular instant messaging application, has received an update in the App Store. Bumped to version 5.8, the app now works side-by-side with other apps in iOS 9's new Split View and Slide Over multitasking on the iPad Pro.

On the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, your most recent chats are now available right from the app's 3D Touch shortcut menu on the Home screen.

This edition of Viber also packs in some other improvements related to 'read' and 'liked' icons in group chats and an all-new media browser for chats.

Developer demonstrates Picture in Picture mode on Apple TV

One of the major new features Apple introduced in iOS 9 was the ability to take advantage of Picture in Picture mode on supported iPad models; a multitasking mode perfect for watching videos while tackling other tasks at the same time, such as web browsing, document writing, social networking, and more.

Oddly enough, the Apple TV, which is essentially a media entertainment system in itself, doesn't come with a similar feature for users wanting to multitask more efficiently on their television sets.

Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has demonstrated Picture in Picture multitasking on the Apple TV 4 via a custom app he made for himself, showing that the hardware inside of the Apple TV on the latest firmware is capable of handing the feature, but it appears Apple has chosen not to include it (yet).

How to stop Background App Refresh for a single app until it’s reopened

Introduced with iOS 7, Background App Refresh lets suspended apps (those that you quit or run in the background) check for new data so that they always present you with up-to-date content.

As useful as Background App Refresh is, it strains your battery due to periodical data fetching, which sometimes occurs even when your device is locked.

You can enable or disable this feature on a per-app basis in Settings → General → Background App Refresh. You can also save yourself a few taps by quickly disabling Background App Refresh for a single app without launching Settings, and here's how.
