TomTom’s iPad App is on the Horizon

Are you a TomTom iPhone app user? Ever wish that your little 3.5" screen was just a bit bigger for GPS navigation? Perhaps, I don't know, say.. 9.7" big for example? Oh, you have? Then you're in luck, as the sat nav company has announced that it will be bringing its popular iPhone app to the iPad – and it won't cost existing owners a penny.

Slated for release this Fall, the app will be a free upgrade to the existing iPhone app, turning it into a fully-fledged universal app...

Apple Working On Turn-By-Turn Navigation in iOS

A new job listing uncovered by AppleInsider hints that Apple is focusing on the enhancement of location-based applications in future versions of iOS. For location-aware apps on the iPhone, Apple is looking to hire a talented "iOS QA Location Engineer" with a focus on GPS technology.

It's been rumored that Apple is working on a better Maps app for iOS, and this new job listing further corroborates that speculation.

13 Mile GPS-Tracked Run Thanks Steve Jobs With a Huge Apple Logo

When Apple co-founder Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO last week, the world sat up and took notice. Many have since paid tribute to the vision and business acumen of Jobs, but one fan has gone a step further.

Apple fan and keen runner Joseph Tame took to the road to show his appreciation, and mapped out his run using the power of GPS and RunKeeper. What did the map show? A giant Apple logo covering Tokyo, Japan...

Apple Working on Augmented Reality for Maps App

There's been a lot of evidence over the last few years that Apple is working on drastically enhancing the Maps application in iOS. From job listings, to the acquisition of mapping companies like Placebase and Poly 9, it's not hard to follow the breadcrumbs.

Fast forward to today, and reports are surfacing that suggest that Apple is taking their research to the next level. MacRumors has uncovered a new patent application from the Cupertino company that describes mapping software with augmented reality functionality...

Jailbreak Tweak Adds Speedometer to Your Maps App

The jailbreak community is responsible for creating many extremely useful utilities for our iDevices. This however, is not one of them.

Speed for Maps more likely falls in the "Hey, that's kind of cool" category. This new jailbreak tweak installs itself in your native Maps application, and it places a speedometer in the bottom right corner...

Stolen iPhone’s Journey Seen Through the Eyes of a Getaway Car

We've told you plenty of interesting stories that involve thievery and the iPhone. This one is no exception.

Sue Huang's iPhone was taken, and she finally got it back five days later after the thief ransomed it back to her. Thanks to the iPhone's GPS, Sue and her friend Brian were able to recreate where her iPhone had been during the five days that the thief drove around with the device in his car.

They stitched together a video of the stolen iPhone's Google Street View location as it moved throughout the city of LA during a period of five days...

iOS 5 Beta 4 Adds Cellular and GPS Toggles to iPod Touch

Remember the rumor that Apple would introduce a 3G-equipped iPod touch at its music event this September? A recent finding in the newly-released iOS 5 Beta 4 uncovers something that all but confirms that possibility.

There's always the chance that Apple got lazy and just forgot to remove the cellular and GPS toggles in the Settings app for the iPod touch, but it's more exciting to speculate that this is a sign of things to come...

iPhone Tracks Down and Helps Arrest Burglars

We love these types of stories on iDB. When the iPhone is used to thwart criminals, it's always fun to read about.

The story of Lilli Gordon and her missing iPhone details how the smartphone's GPS was used by authorities to track down the thieves and Lilli's stolen valuables. Hopefully stories like this will teach would-be-prowlers that smartphones aren't the best items to steal...

TryGpsOut: Turn Your Wi-Fi iPad into a Digital Map

The jailbreak community is responsible for a number of iDevice enhancements and innovations. Jailbreak developers are constantly giving our iDevices features that Apple for one reason or another has left out.

A perfect example is BTStack GPS. The utility allows you to connect an external GPS unit to your iPad to use with mapping software. Don't own an external GPS unit? The community's got you covered there too. A new app called TryGpsOut will allow you to use your iPhone instead...

FakeLocation: Make Apps Believe You Are Anywhere

In reading through my RSS feeds this morning, I came across a jailbreak app that I couldn't believe hadn't ever covered on iDB. Though FakeLocation has been around for quite some time, it is a useful utility worth reminding folks about.

The package certainly lives up to its name, as it allows you to fake your GPS location for inquiring applications. This means that you can trick apps like Google Latitude into thinking you are located somewhere else...

Evidence Surfaces in iOS 5 that Apple is Still Working on Maps App

I have to admit, after all the evidence we've seen over the last several months, I was a little surprised that we didn't see any kind of major improvements to the Map app in iOS 5. Apple has purchased multiple GPS software companies in the last few years, including PlaceBase and Poly9.

But even though there were no significant Map announcements at WWDC, there's still hope. Apple's developer's conference only gave us a "sneak peak"  at 10 items from a list of over 200 improvements, so it's very possible that we may still see Maps get a revamp this fall...

US Army Prepares the iPhone for War

Following in the footsteps of the U.S. Government, the Army is planning to hold desert trials in the U.S. next week to test smartphones and tablets for use during war. Devices include the iPhone and Android-powered handsets, which will be stress-tested with a variety of applications that could see troops using smartphones during battle.

The devices would be used for things lie monitoring surveillance cameras or downloading "up-to-the minute information from a remote database," according to a Wall Street Journal report...
