How the Apple-Beats deal affects HP, AT&T and others

If you haven't been following the latest news, it is a prerequisite to know that Apple has acquired Beats for $3 billion before reading further. The announcement has created a lot of confusion in regards to what the acquisition means for Beats and existing partnerships with the brand. Just to be clear, Beats collectively refers to both Beats Electronics, which markets high-end headphones, speakers and audio software, and the streaming music service Beats Music.

Prior to being acquired, Beats had several partnerships with other brands, including companies that are direct competitors with Apple. Most notable is Hewlett-Packard, which uses Beats Audio branding and technologies in its product lineup. AT&T has an exclusive deal with Beats Music to sell subscriptions and an unlimited music downloading family plan, and design firm Ammunition has a partnership to create Beats products. Even HTC has been in the mix.

Verizon announces VoLTE rollout for later this year, iOS 8 expected to support it

Verizon Wireless has announced the roll out of its Voice over LTE technology - better known as VoLTE - will begin across the US later this year.

The new technology will move Verizon's LTE service past data and will offer an HD Voice experience, using the AMR-wideband standard. "This solution provides the best voice quality available now and allows for future interoperability with others using the standard," Verizon claims. 

AT&T announces acquisition of DirecTV for close to $50 billion

As expected, AT&T has announced today that it has reached a deal to acquire satellite TV heavyweight DirecTV. The buyout will come in the form of a stock-and-cash transaction—$95 per share based on AT&T's Friday closing price—worth in upwards of $50 billion.

Between DirecTV’s satellite business and AT&T’s U-verse arm, the move results in a combined 26 million TV subscribers. That essentially makes AT&T the number one pay-TV provider, second if the long-rumored Comcast/Time Warner Cable deal ever goes through...

AT&T rolling out HD Voice and Voice Over LTE in select markets beginning next Friday

AT&T introduces in-store pickup for online orders

If you plan on buying a smartphone or a tablet from AT&T anytime soon, you'll love the carrier's new in-store pickup option. Introduced Monday, the service allows you to order your mobile gear online - be it a smartphone/tablet, a piece of network equipment such as routers and 4G MiFi hotspots or various wireless accessories - and have it delivered to a nearby brick-and-mortar store.

Verizon for quite some time has been offering in-store pickups for online orders - as has been Apple - so this new service will improve AT&T's ability to compete and potentially help increase foot traffic at its own stores...

AT&T reportedly considering buying DirecTV for $40 billion

Following the news that Sprint is considering buying T-Mobile comes word of another major acquisition. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that AT&T has approached DirecTV to begin possible buyout talks. The deal, the outlet says, could be worth over $40 billion in cash, stock and other assets.

Between DirecTV's satellite business and AT&T's U-verse arm, the move would result in a combined 26 million TV subscribers—which would be second only to the hypothetical Comcast/TWC combination, should that deal go through. So essentially, the two companies would hold most of the market...

AT&T planning in-flight 4G connectivity for late-2015

AT&T has announced on Monday plans to launch in-flight 4G connectivity as early as late-2015, a technology it touts could be more reliable than in-flight Wi-Fi already made available on some flights in the US.

To deliver the new service, AT&T plans to build an air-to-ground network in the US, based on global 4G LTE standards, to "provide fast speeds and efficient utilization" of spectrum already owned by AT&T. 

FCC approves AT&T’s $1.3 billion acquisition of Leap Wireless

Last summer, AT&T announced that it had reached an acquisition deal with Leap Wireless. The company said that it would be buying out the provider, which owns and operates the popular prepaid carrier Cricket, for $15 per share—equal to $1.3 billion. All it needed was approval from the FCC.

And it just got it. Yesterday the Federal Communications Commission gave AT&T's acquisition proposal a thumbs up, ruling that "the public interest benefits of the proposed transaction outweigh the likelihood of significant public interest harms." So what does this mean for everybody involved?

AT&T discounts single-line data plans, 2GB now $65 per month

AT&T, the nation's #2 wireless carrier, said yesterday that its customers can take advantage of cheaper single-line data plans. Starting today, two gigabytes of high-speed 4G data will set you back $65 per month, which represents a $15 savings compared to the cost of the previous plan. The plan includes fifty gigabytes of cloud storage as well as unlimited international messaging and calling.

An additional line can be added for $25 per month. A month ago, the carrier slashed the prices of its Mobile Share family plans...

AT&T’s LTE-Advanced network now live in Chicago

Folks living in and around Chicago will be happy to hear that AT&T has souped up its network in the Windy City. Using an LTE-Advanced technology called 'carrier aggregation,' the company has bonded two 4G networks together in the area resulting in a big boost in performance.

So essentially, AT&T is taking two, single one-way highways and merging them into one, single two-way highway, allowing for more bandwidth and theoretical download speeds of up to 110 Mbps. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of devices that support the beefier network...

AT&T flips the switch on LTE in dozen new markets

The United States wireless carrier AT&T has lit up its fourth-generation Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network in twelve new municipalities around the country. The expansion brings AT&T's LTE to an additional 300,000 people, including the 65,000 residents of Bismark, North Dakota.

With this expansion, nearly 280 million people are covered by AT&T's LTE network in more than 500 U.S. markets. More than half of the carrier's postpaid smartphone customers now use a 4G LTE device.
