Vimeo now streams 4K video on iPad Pro, gains a bunch of other new features in 6.0 update

Thursday, Vimeo pushed a significant update to its free of charge app in the App Store which lets you record, upload and share high-quality, ad-free clips on the service.

The new app packs updated navigation tools, has richer uploading options and sports a brand new player with support for 4K streaming and enhanced Picture-In-Picture viewing on compatible devices such as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Search is now faster than ever and you can browse new curated categories like Animation, Documentary, Travel and more. Saving videos to watch offline is now easier than before, you can now upload clips from your smartphone and tablets and more.

iPad Air 3 rumored to have 4K screen, 4GB of RAM and improved battery

Apple is widely expected to announce a third-generation iPad Air at a March event in a few weeks time and the latest supply chain chatter has it that the device will come outfitted with an ultra sharp display boasting a 4K resolution, or nearly four times the pixels of Apple's current-generation 9.7-inch 2,048-by-1,536 pixel Retina display.

According to Taiwanese trade publication DigiTimes, it'll also have an improved battery life and feature four gigabytes of RAM versus the iPad Air 2's two gigs of RAM.

iMovie now supports 4K video editing on the iPad Air 2

You know, I was literally just wondering what was preventing the iPad Air 2 from supporting 4K video editing in iMovie, and then bam! Apple releases an update with 4K video support in tow.

The iPhone 6s already supports 4K video editing in iMovie to go along with its 4K shooting capabilities, but no other publicly available device in the iOS lineup supported 4K editing in iMovie until today.

iMovie for Mac just received a significant new update that brings 4K support and support for full HD videos at 60 frames per second. The update, which corresponds with the launch of Apple's long-expected new 4K-toting 21" iMac, allows users to edit and share 4K movies.

Billed as version 10.1, the new iMovie update will allow those using Retina Display-enabled iMacs, or a MacPro with a connected 4K display, to edit videos in 4K resolution. Although Apple doesn't explicitly state it, I'm assuming that iMovie's 4K ability will work with MacBook Pros that are capable of driving an external 4K display as well.

As suspected, Apple today announced a refresh to its all-in-one desktop, refreshing the 21.5-inch model with a brand spanking new screen with 4K resolution versus a 1080p screen on the previous-generation model.

In addition, the Retina 5K display is now available on every 27-inch iMac as Apple has removed the non-Retina 27-inch models from sale.

The updated all-in-ones come outfitted with more powerful processors and graphics, two Thunderbolt 2 ports and new storage options that make the high-performance Fusion Drive even more affordable.

Last but not least, the Cupertino firm has refreshed its keyboard, mouse and trackpad accessories with rechargeable batteries, Bluetooth 4.0 networking and more, with the Magic Trackpad 2 featuring Force Touch technology.

Next-generation 21.5-inch iMac with 4K screen could hit as soon as next Tuesday

Code strings discovered in El Capitan Developer Preview earlier this summer have pointed at a substantial refresh coming to Apple's 21.5-inch iMac, even more so given that computer wasn't updated alongside its 27-inch sibling in May 2015.

A next-generation 21.5-inch iMac with an ultra-sharp screen featuring a glorious 4K resolution is now expected to launch as soon as next Tuesday, as per multiple reliable sources who spoke with 9to5Mac.

Why 4K video matters on the iPhone 6s

Why would Apple enable 4K video capture on a phone that can't actually display 4K content in full resolution on screen? The reasons are multifaceted, but one obvious reason is that it allows users to zoom in on video while still maintaining crisp resolution.

Coincidently, iOS 9 now supports pinch to zoom and double-tap to zoom on videos in the Photos app. This makes it possible to zoom in to a specific portion of the video without necessarily sacrificing the amount of resolution needed to look great on most of today's displays. Zooming also allows for creative and flexible video editing solutions while working in apps like iMovie, which supports 4K editing. To make a long story short: it's all about the zoom.

Amazon responds to new Apple TV with updated Fire TV box with 4K support and Alexa search

Eight days have passed since Apple has taken the wraps off its fourth-generation $149 Apple TV featuring downloadable apps and games, universal search with Siri and more, and now Amazon has conveniently rolled out its second-generation Fire TV.

Unlike the new Apple TV which disables 4K video output in software, the new Fire TV supports 4K video streaming right out of the box. It includes a new voice-enabled remote and comes outfitted with Alexa, which is basically Amazon's version of Siri.

iMovie for iOS updated with 4K video editing on iPhone 6s and much more

At its 'Hey Siri' media event last week, Apple demonstrated how the all-new 'A9' microchip ticking inside the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has enough oomph to edit 4K video by showing off native 4K video editing on both new iPhones and the iPad Pro with iMovie.

Today, iMovie for iOS receives a timely refresh in the App Store to bring this feature to the latest devices along with more than a dozen other enhancements for older iDevices.

You should opt for at least a 64GB iPhone 6s if you plan on shooting 4K video

As I conjectured back when it was first rumored that the new iPhone 6s would get 4K video recording capabilities, iPhone 6s owners will have a hard time maintaining space if they shoot even a moderate amount of Ultra High-Definition video on a 16GB iPhone 6s.

First and foremost, the 16GB iPhone features about 12 GBs or so of usable storage space. 4K video, while amazing looking, uses 375 MB of storage for every minute of video shot. It doesn't take a mathematician to quickly discern that 4K video will eat through 12GBs of storage space in relatively short order.

So does the new Apple TV support 4K or not?

As I was watching Apple's media event unfold this morning from halfway across the world, I kept my fingers crossed for a 4K-capable Apple TV. Thankfully, the much improved Apple TV is at long last official but it's conspicuous that there is absolutely no word of 4K support whatsoever.

True, 9to5Mac did report last month that the new box would “lack 4K support for streaming video and AirPlay,” but apparently the hardware itself does support 4K capability, meaning Apple has purposefully disabled 4K on the new Apple TV,

Does that mean that the company is planning on enabling 4K with a software update int the future? This has been on my mind since the event has wrapped up and I'm hoping you could help me get to the bottom of this matter.

Report: Apple TV lacks 4K video streaming, 8/16GB prototypes tested and more

The allegedly upcoming Apple TV refresh will file as the most detailed overhaul of the device's hardware, but it doesn't seem that the new box will support 4K streaming, as per 9to5Mac's sources.

The publication reported today that even though the fourth-generation Apple TV will be powered by Apple's sped-up A8 processor (likely overclocked, as there will be no battery bottlenecks), it purportedly won't support video streaming and AirPlay in 4K.

This is something of a surprise considering that the A8 processor inside the iPhone 6 was found capable of rendering 4K 3,840-by-2,160 pixel footage without a hiccup.
