Huge iPhone 4S Sales Knock Android Off Top Spot

Apple yesterday announced its sales numbers for the latest quarter, and what results they were. 37 million iPhones sold is not a number to be sniffed at, and it's one that was enough to see Apple overtake Samsung once more as the top dog in smartphone sales.

The huge number of iPhones sold has also seen Apple's smartphone overtake Android handsets, with the competition – HTC, Motorola – reporting less than stellar figures themselves...

Tim Cook: We Underestimated Chinese Demand for iPhone 4S

When Apple's iPhone 4S went on Sale in China on January 12th, many were taken by surprise at the sheer number of people that turned up to buy one.

The chaos was so bad in fact, that Apple was forced to close its stores amid safety concerns – a move which simply angered those who had queued for hours, resulting in eggs being hurled at the store's windows.

Now Apple CEO Tim Cook has admitted that the company had underestimated the "staggering" demand for its iPhone in the country, and that they thought they had already overcooked sales estimates...

With 85 Million Users, iCloud Plays Big Part in Apple’s Next 10 Years Strategy

Apple's quarterly earnings call has certainly raised a few eyebrows this time around, with the company reporting huge sales, huge profits and just all around awesomeness. If you're an Apple shareholder, then you're probably very happy right about now.

Many interesting tidbits came out of the earnings call, but one that may not be getting that much attention is the news that there are now 85 million iCloud users, making it clear just why Apple needed that fancy new data center after all.

We suspect Apple wishes it was charging them all the same $99 it charged for MobileMe...

Dutch Judge Denies Apple Appeal, Deems Galaxy Tab Legal

Apple today lost the latest round of its legal battle with Samsung, with a Dutch appeal court siding with the Korean tablet and smartphone maker.

Apple had claimed that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet had infringed upon some of company's iPad patents, and sought a ban of the infringing hardware. At an appeal hearing today however, a Dutch judge at The Hague deemed the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to be a legal device, saying that it does not infringe on Apple's patents...

Over Half of the Smartphones Verizon Sold Last Quarter Were iPhones

Verizon announced its quarterly figures for the end of 2011, with the iPhone effect in full swing for the America's largest mobile phone carrier.

Despite tough competition from both AT&T and Sprint, Verizon saw its best figures for subscriber additions for three years, with an extra 1.5 million customers now on board.

With 4.2 million iPhones reportedly shipped during the same period it isn't too far a stretch to suggest that Apple's smartphone may well have helped Verizon along in that achievement...

Virgin America’s Tribute to Steve Jobs

Apple's co-founder and former CEO, the late Steve Jobs, was an inspirational figure for many people, with tributes flooding in after his death in October of 2011. People from across the globe, both inside the technology industry and out, all paid their respects in their own ways.

Now Virgin America has also paid tribute to the man that almost single handedly rescued Apple from an uncertain future when he returned to the company in 1997, with the airline having one of Jobs' most memorable quotes emblazoned on one of its new airplanes.

"Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish" was a quote that Jobs gave during his famous Standford address in 2005, and has since gone on to become synonymous with Jobs himself. Now one of Virgin America's new A320 airplanes has the same quote written in its side, too...

Microsoft Releases MSN UK iPad App That Looks Just Like Pulse

Microsoft's latest iPad app comes in the form of the new MSN UK app, which was made available today.

The app allows UK users to keep up to date on MSN UK news articles, as well as watch video and even stream them to an AirPlay-enabled device such as an Apple TV.

If the whole thing looks eerily familiar then there's a very good reason – the MSN UK iPad app bears a striking resemblance to the Pulse news reader app which has been around for some time now...

36% of iPhone 4S Buyers Came From Another Platform

Apple's iPhone 4S launch was a resounding success by all accounts, and it even proved popular amongst those who already had a competing smartphone according to a new report.

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners today released information on a study it conducted of those who bought Apple's flagship smartphone. Two of the most interesting statistics show just how many new iPhone 4S owners moved away from competing platforms as well as how many plumped for the most expensive model in the range.

36% of new iPhone 4S owners apparently moved away from another smartphone platform, while 21% stumped up the cash for Apple's 64GB model...

Evi is Siri for People Who Don’t Have Siri

Apple's Siri is certainly not alone in trying to be our digital assistant that knows everything and can help us in any way we ask. Quite how successful Siri is in its quest will depend on how you use it and whether your accent fits, but that's something we've already discussed to exhaustion.

One new app which is aiming to take on Siri goes by the name of Evi, which we're sure was chosen for one reason and one reason only – it sounds just like its competition.

Evi is available for both iOS and Android, with the latter being free and the former towing a $0.99 price tag. The discrepancy is apparently down to the need to pay Nuance for the voice recognition engine – an engine that is not used in the Android version. At less than a dollar we'll not complain too much...

19% of Americans Now Own a Tablet

The Christmas period is always one where technology sees a huge increase in sales, and the 2011 holidays were no exception. According to one report, in fact, the Christmas period has seen tablet ownership in the United Stated jump dramatically.

The report, compiled by Pew, shows that tablet ownership amongst US adults rose from 10% to 19% over the holidays, with e-readers also seeing a growth in ownership figures.

Pew's figures also suggest that there is little overlap between the two...

Rumor: More Claims of a 4-inch Screen for the iPhone 5

Rumors are very much part of the Apple culture, and nothing garners more speculation than the iPhone. We're only a few months into the life cycle of the iPhone 4S, but we are already in the realms of both the sublime and the ridiculous when it comes to rumors for what will become of the iPhone 5.

The biggest rumor that just will not die is one that suggests the next generation iPhone will come with a new, larger screen. With a 4-inch part being rumored strongly, a new analyst has joined the discussion, although they are apparently unwilling to share who their sources are.

Pinch of salt in hand with this one then...

Add AirPlay to any TV with a $35 Mini Computer

AirPlay is possibly one of the unsung heroes of the iOS world, and if you own an iOS device and an Apple TV, then you really should be taking advantage of it. If you don't have an Apple TV then there may just be another option on the table.

Using a Raspberry Pi computer, it is actually possible to create your very own HDMI-enabled AirPlay-receiving machine which is so small you'll almost forget it's there.

Did we mention the whole thing costs just $35? Oh, that too...
