Dropbox Passwords to undergo phased shut down starting next month

Dropbox Passwords, a password manager solution provided by popular cross-platform cloud storage company Dropbox, will be fully discontinued on October 28th, 2025 following a phased discontinuation schedule, according to an announcement shared this week by the company.

As it would seem, Dropbox wants to spend more of its time and resources improving its core product: the cross-platform cloud storage platform that Dropbox is known for. They even name-dropped 1Password as a solid alternative to their product, however many devices now have their own built-in password manager solutions, like Apple’s Passwords app.

The discontinuation will begin starting on August 28th, 2025 with Dropbox Passwords becoming view-only in both the mobile app and the browser extension. In this phase, you can view your saved usernames, passwords, and payment methods, but will be prevented from adding new ones. Moreover, auto-fill will stop working.

By September 11th, 2025, the Dropbox Passwords app will stop working, but users may still access their stored usernames, passwords, and payment methods from the browser extension at this time.

Lastly, the full discontinuation will occur on October 28th, 2025, during which access to saved usernames, passwords, and payment methods will no longer be possible in the Dropbox Passwords app or the browser extension. All this data will be securely deleted from Dropbox’s cloud servers and Dropbox’s dark web monitoring will also cease to exist.

Because the data will be permanently deleted on the aforementioned date, anyone who misses the deadline will be unable to retrieve their usernames, passwords, and payment information, so time is of the essence.

With almost a month remaining until the first phase of this move by Dropbox, users can begin migrating their data to another password manager, such as 1Password. The Dropbox Passwords app and browser extension feature an Export option that allows users to easily offload all their data for import into another platform.
