The third season of the Apple TV+ hit show “Severance“ is in production, but it won’t take three years to arrive like the previous season.
Showrunner Ben Stiller previously said they were aiming to release “Severance” season 3 much, much sooner than the three-year gap between the first two seasons. The Apple TV+ head of programming Matt Cherniss has reiterated that stance in a chat with Variety, confirming the show’s been renewed for a third season.
“No one wants it to be another three-year gap,” he said. “I don’t believe that we have a production start date yet, but we’re moving in that direction.” Both the first and second seasons of “Severance” are streaming now on Apple TV+.
“Severance” season 3 is in production
The first season of “Severance” premiered on Apple TV+ in February 2022, but the second season (with an extra episode) took three years to arrive and wouldn’t hit Apple’sstreaming service until January 2025 due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023.
Cherniss told Variety that writer Dan Erickson and executive producers, including director Ben Stiller, are currently developing season 3.
“I think everyone’s just going to take a deep breath and enjoy where we’re at,” he said. “I know they’re going as quickly as they can.”
“When you have the success that a show like ‘Severance’ has, you want to make sure you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time,” he said. “But they’re on it, and I think I’m feeling really good about where we’re at.”
In case you missed Apple’s glass cube pop-up in Grand Central Station and other clever marketing promotions, “Severance” proved a massively popular show for Apple TV+. The psychological thriller series revolves around the fictional biotechnology corporation Lumon Industries, which provides a medical procedure to employees who would like to separate their workplace memories from private ones.
“Severance” brought Apple 27 Emmy nominations
“Severance” has earned Apple 27 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and nine performance category nominations, which is the largest-ever number of Emmy nominations for the video service as of yet.
“’Severance’ and ‘The Studio’ have exceeded our wildest expectations in earning the most nominations for both drama and comedy series, alongside the phenomenal ‘Shrinking’ and ‘Slow Horses,’” Zack Van Amburg, Apple’s head of Worldwide Video, was quoted as saying in yesterday’s press release.
“These shows have connected deeply with audiences around the world, and we’re incredibly appreciative to the Television Academy for recognizing the breadth of storytelling that has been an honor for us to champion,” Van Amburg added.
