iPhone 17 supports the upgraded Qi 2.2 specification for 25W wireless charging

This year’s upcoming iPhone 17 lineup is expected to support the latest Qi 2.2 specification that boosts the wireless charging speed from 15W to 25W.

Currently, iPhones support 15W wireless charging via the previous Qi 2 protocol and up to 25W charging via MagSafe. The new Qi 2.2 specification brings it on par with MagSafe by boosting charging speed from 15W to 25W, matching MagSafe.

The previous report that claimed Qi 2.2 would bring 50W wireless charging was wrong—the latest regulatory filings for updated MagSafe Chargers that surfaced on Taiwan’s NCC certification website confirm that Qi 2.2 officially supports up to 25W.

The new protocol will require adoption from not only device makers like Apple, Samsung and others, but also companies that produce wireless chargers, like Satechi, Nomad, Twelve South, Ugreen and others.

The standard was recently certified, so don’t hold your breath for the first Qi 2.2-compatible chargers before the iPhone 17 lineup is released in September.

Ugreen is already ahead of the pack with the announcement of its MagFlow Magnetic Power Bank, coming in the third quarter of 2025. The company says the upcoming power bank is the world’s first product to receive Qi 2.2 certification.

Qi 2.2 is compatible with older Qi chargers. Aside from a faster charging speed, the updated protocol promises to improve magnetic alignment and charging efficiency.

Qi 2.0 vs Qi 2.2 vs MagSafe

The Qi 2 specification (which iPhones support) maxes out at 15W. The iPhone 12 and newer models support MagSafe, Apple’s proprietary wireless charging specification that the company contributed for free to the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) to implement MagSafe-like features into the Q2 protocol, including magnetic snapping and faster charging at 15W.

However, MagSafe on the iPhone 16 lineup goes beyond 15W. When used with an upgraded Apple MagSafe Charger and an official 30W Apple charger, any iPhone 16 model can fast-charge wirelessly via MagSafe at 25W, bringing the battery from dead to fifty percent in about thirty minutes, according to Apple’s support page.
