Threaded message replies are coming to WhatsApp for iPhone

Meta is currently testing threaded message replies in WhatsApp for iPhone for more structured conversations, especially in busy group chats.

WEBetaInfo spotted the new feature in the current WhatsApp for iOS beta available for testing through TestFlight. Threader replies are not yet fully functional as the feature is still being developed, but they’re in a partially working state.

A small reply counter indicates that a specific conversation has received a threaded reply. Tapping the counter opens the full thread on a new screen, allowing you to read them in the order they were sent as well as reply directly in the thread.

WhatsApp for iPhone is gaining threaded message replies

“By tapping on this indicator, users will be able to open a new screen that displays all replies related to the original message in an organized view,” WABetaInfo notes.

“Within this new screen, users will not only be able to read all the replies but also send a new reply directly, which will automatically be added to the same thread. This ensures continuity and keeps related messages neatly grouped together.”

Meta should release the threaded message replies feature in a future update to WhatsApp for iPhone. To ensure you have the latest version of the app, visit the WhatsApp page on the App Store and choose “Update.” If you don’t see the option, you’re up to date.

How are threaded replies useful?

WhatsApp has supported inline replies for quite some time, but threaded replies are different. With inline replies, your reply is sent along with a quoted message. Threaded replies, on the other hand, permit you to reply to specific messages separately from the main chat. All replies to that specific message appear in the same thread instead of the main conversation.

Threaded message replies help keep the conversation flowing more naturally, especially in overlapping conversations where you’re wondering what a specific reply is supposed to address. And because threaded replies don’t pollute the main chat feed, they are especially useful in group chats or one-on-one conversations where multiple topics are discussed simultaneously.

Other new WhatsApp features coming

Meta is also testing the ability to switch between two different accounts on one iPhone without having to use WhatsApp Business for a second account. WhatsApp usernames will make it possible to use the messaging app without revealing your actual mobile phone number.

Meta recently launched a native WhatsApp iPad app and released enhancements like voice chat in group conversations, AI wallpapers, message summarization and new privacy controls, and more.
