What is Tap to Pay on iPhone?

Tap to Pay debuted in February 2022 in the United States, allowing iPhone owners to accept contactless payments via Apple Pay and NFC-enabled credit and debit cards without requiring extra hardware like USB dongles.

“As more and more consumers are tapping to pay with digital wallets and credit cards,” Apple’s Jennifer Bailey said at the launch in 2022. “Tap to Pay on iPhone will provide businesses with a secure, private, and easy way to accept contactless payments and unlock new checkout experiences using the power, security and convenience of iPhone.”

Apple’s implementation of the feature supports PIN entry. Tap to Pay works with contactless credit and debit cards from American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa. In Belgium, Bancontact is available with Axepta and Viva. In Denmark, Dankort is available with Nexi and Surfboard Payments.

“Apple works closely with leading payment platforms and app developers across the payments and commerce industry to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone,” notes today’s announcement. “Payment platforms and developers can integrate Tap to Pay on iPhone into their iOS apps, making it easy for merchants to enable this secure and convenient capability.”
