Apple on Tuesday released an updated firmware for the company’s over-the-ear AirPods Max with USB-C, pushing the previous firmware version of 7E101 up to a newer firmware version of 7E108.

Citing the contents of Apple’s ‘About firmware updates for AirPods’ online support page, firmware version 7E108 for the AirPods Max with USB-C is a general user experience update that lacks any notable new features, as the change log notes “bug fixes and other improvements” as being what’s new.
Because of the vague change log, it’s unknown what the update brings to the table, whether that’s enhanced audio quality, improvements to Bluetooth connectivity, bug fixes for certain apps, or some other undisclosed improvement. What we do know is that all users of this audio device should strive to use the latest firmware for the best user experience.
It’s worth noting that the same update isn’t available for the AirPods Max with Lightning, nor are there any respective updates for any other AirPods model.
To see what firmware version your AirPods are running, you can open the information (i) page for your AirPods in your device’s Bluetooth menu, and the firmware version will be displayed like so:
Apple notes that while users can’t specifically force their AirPods’ firmware to update manually, they can set the stage for the best updating conditions by ensuring that the following requirements are met:
- Ensure that your AirPods are connected to power and charging
- Ensure that your AirPods are within Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
- Ensure that your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is in range of and connected to a Wi-Fi network with internet access
When the aforementioned criteria are met, AirPods will check for updates and install those updates automatically in the background.
For AirPods users who don’t have access to an Apple device to meet the criteria above, such as Android or Nintendo Switch users who actively use AirPods for audio, Apple recommends visiting an Apple retail store to get the firmware updated to the latest version.
