Use these free apps, shortcuts, and websites to split images into multiple parts on your iPhone, iPad, or computer, for flexible posting on social media.

Some of the reasons why you may want to split images into multiple parts:

Here are several quick ways to divide a picture into multiple pieces.

Websites for splitting images

Use free image-splitting websites if you don’t want to download any apps. You will need to upload an image and choose the number of rows and columns for a split. The website will give you a downloadable ZIP archive containing individual images that you can open on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other devices.

Using image splitter website

SafeImageKit: This website literally allows you to split a single image into thousands of pieces, and download them all with one click.

Imagy: Like SafeImageKit, this website uses local browser processing to split images so no uploads are required. You can choose to cut the image horizontally, vertically, or both.

Imgonline: This is a well-known website with a bunch of image editing tools, image formats  like TIFF, BMP, and GIF, and customization options to split images just the way you like.

Pinetools: In addition to downloading a ZIP archive, Pinetools also lets you separately save any individual part. The main drawback is that it doesn’t show clear horizontal or vertical lines when adjusting your split settings.

Automate image splitting with the Shortcuts app

The InstaGrid shortcut can split a photo into 3 by 1 to 3 by 5 layouts. If you know your way around the built-in Shortcuts app, edit InstaGrid there to make it work the way you like. Unfortunately, this shortcut won’t show you a preview of how it will chop the photo. To run the shortcut, touch it. Then, select the desired image in the Photos picker and choose a split pattern. The resulting images are saved in the Photos app.

Ease of use is the main allure of native iPhone or iPad apps. Most of the image splitting apps on the App Store have slick interfaces and include extra features like filters, custom borders, ratios, and so on. Some of them also work offline. We’ve listed various options for various skill levels, so choose one that suits your needs.

PicSplit can split an image into a 20 x 20 grid, for a total of 400 tiny parts! However, you must subscribe to a paid plan or watch an ad to export to Photos. The app also lets you add markings to a photo, making it appear as if it’s split; in reality, however, it’s just a single image.

Mixoo is among the best image-splitting apps if you don’t need more than twelve individual parts. You can choose from templates that divide an image into three, six, nine, or twelve split patterns. However, there’s no custom option, making this app a bit inflexible.

PhoSplit

PhoSplit allows you to split an image in up to 5 vertical and 5 horizontal cells for a maximum of 25 smaller pieces. You can quickly change the split ratio by choosing from different options like 1:1 (square), 2:3, 3:5, 9:16 (wallpaper), 16:9, etc. It works well overall, but the free version adds a small watermark in the bottom-right corner. You’ll need to buy a subscription to remove the watermark or customize it with your name or something else.

Photo Split makes it a cinch to split both photos and videos, apply custom blur, and perform basic video editing. The clean, easy to use interface offers 8 splitting styles. Unfortunately, there’s no preset for vertical splitting. I also experienced frequent app crashes that couldn’t be resolved in any way other than deleting and redownloading the app.
