Back Tap Double and Triple Tap Detected banner on iPhone

Why does this appear?

iOS displays a “Back Tap Detected” banner if you double or triple-tap the iPhone’s rear side, whether accidentally or intentionally, provided the Back Tap accessibility feature is turned on. This banner is a visual confirmation that Back Tap has been triggered.

Why is it confusing?

The Back Tap toggle has existed in the iPhone’s accessibility settings for years, but banner confirmation was only added recently in iOS 18. Even folks who are familiar with Back Tap are confused by the notification, wondering why this thing pops up every time they tap the iPhone’s rear side twice or thrice.

Of course, the banner is a lot more puzzling for those who don’t know Back Tap exists, especially given the feature can be accidentally invoked when taking an iPhone out of your pocket, keeping it in a purse, or holding it in your hand.

Turn off the Back Tap Detected banner on your iPhone

You can turn off the banner in your Back Tap settings to stop it from showing up every time you double or triple-tap the backside of your iPhone.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone running the latest version of iOS 18.
  2. Select Accessibility from the list of options.
  3. Go to the Touch section.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom and tap Back Tap.
  5. Turn off the Show Banner button to disable the “Back Tap Detected” alert.
