Instagram’s CapCut clone, called Edits, has now launched on the iPhone and Android as a standalone AI-powered video-editing software.
The delayed TikTok ban in the United States presented Meta with an unexpected opportunity to draw TikTok creators to Instagram. If you’ve been publishing videos on TikTok, you’re no doubt familiar with CapCut, an excellent AI-powered video-editing app from TikTok owner ByteDance. Well, Instagram now has its own CapCut.
Announced in January, Edits is now available as a free download from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store. The app lets you edit videos, manage projects, manage video projects, gain live insights into reels performance and more.
Instagram Edits launches as a CapCut clone
Meta describes Edits as a free video editor that “makes it easy for creators to turn their ideas into videos, right on their phone,” with “all the tools you need to support your creation process, all in one place.” Some of the AI-powered features in Edits not found in the Instagram app include green screen replacement, subject cutouts and animating static images.
Edits isn’t restricted to Instagram. With it, you can edit videos “with single-frame precision” and export them in 4K to the camera roll or share to any platform without a watermark (sharing to Instagram is restricted to 1080p). You an also record videos inside the app up to ten minutes long.
Edits lets you adjust your recording resolution, frame rate and dynamic range (yes, you can shoot non-HDR video). Like CapCut, Edits includes fonts, sound and voice effects, video filters, stickers and more to bring your videos to life.
Of course, Edits can automatically generate captions for you, and it will also boost audio to remove background noise and make your voice clearer as if you’ve used a professional microphone. You can download Instagram Edits for free in the App Store. The iPhone-only app requires iOS 15.1 or later.
Upcoming features
Meta in a press release today also highlighted some of the upcoming Edits features it’s already working on in these areas:
- Keyframes: Pinpoint exact moments for adjustments to your video’s timing, motion and effects.
- Modification: Quickly change the look and feel of your videos with AI effects.
- Collaboration: Easily share drafts with friends, other creators or brands for feedback and creative builds.
- Creativity: More fonts, text animations, transitions, voice effects, filters and music options, including royalty-free.
A recent rumor alleged that Meta might soon release an official Instagram iPad app almost fifteen years after Apple released the first iPad model back in 2010.
