Netflix is testing a search feature powered by OpenAI technology that will enable you to find shows and movies to watch based on your mood.
Netflix has a powerful technology partner for this feature: OpenAI. As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, OpenAI is the company that brought you ChatGPT. Netflix has been using machine learning and artificial intelligence for its recommendation algorithm for about twenty years now, but there’s always room for improvement.
A new Netflix feature being tested would bring Spotify-style search based on mood or parameters that “go well beyond genres or actors’ names,” reports Bloomberg.
OpenAI is powering mood-based search on Netflix
The Verge has confirmed with Netflix that the company is conducting this test with some of its iPhone and iPad subscribers in Australia and New Zealand. A spokesperson said the test will expand to the United States “in the coming weeks and months.” If you’re included in this test, you’ll be offered to opt in.
If the streamer receives enough positive feedback, mood-based search will roll out to all Netflix users. Interestingly, Netflix says it currently has no plans to make this feature available outside of the Netflix iOS app, like on Android handsets.
Netflix is still a major holdout in terms of integration with Apple’s TV app and watching Netflix on the Vision Pro headset outside of the Safari browser.
In terms of the former, some Apple TV owners recently saw shows from Netflix popping up in the built-in TV app. However, the streamer pulled the feature soon after, saying it was a mistake. When it comes to the latter, the SuperCut third-party app is a nice alternative; it can stream Netflix on the Vision Pro headset in 4K resolution with Dolby Vision HDR color and Dolby Atmos multichannel audio.
