We’ve been reporting for the past couple of weeks that iOS developer LeminLimez was working on a massive update for the macOS and Windows-oriented Nugget SparseRestore-based system customization utility for iPhones and iPads that would introduce animated wallpapers without the need to jailbreak said devices.
Fortunately, this update is no longer only available to beta testers, as LeminLimez officially released Nugget version 5.0 on Monday via their GitHub page. The full change log for Nugget v5.0 is as follows:
– PosterBoard is here! Apply animated wallpapers using .tendies files.
– Community wallpapers can be found here
– Documentation for tendies files can be found in documentation.md
– This feature supports iOS 17.0+, including non-sparserestore versions (iOS 18.2 – iOS 18.4 beta+)
– Devices now show whether they are connected via USB or Wi-Fi in the device picker
– Backend changes: App Domains are now supported in the backup API (automatically handled after supplying bundle id)
– Fixed minor Windows-specific issues
– Small improvements to error handling while applying
The animated wallpapers utilize .tendies files, and while community-based wallpapers can be downloaded by users and applied to devices with the Nugget utility quite easily, those adventurous enough to attempt making their own can do so too, but this requires a Mac.
Animated wallpapers will appear under the device’s native wallpapers menu once applied, giving users a particularly native-feeling user experience.
Other smaller changes in this update include the ability to see whether devices are connected over USB or Wi-Fi in the device picker, support for app domains in the backup API, Windows operating system-based fixes, and error handling improvements, among other things.
It’s worth noting that while animated wallpapers were a substantial leap forward in what could be made possible with Nugget, the developer still plans a future update that will unlock video wallpaper capabilities. video wallpapers, unlike animated wallpapers, will utilize actual .mov files from the user’s Photo Library.
It’s expected that video wallpapers could come in a version 5.1 update to Nugget, but there’s no ETA for that at this point in time.
Using Nugget doesn’t require a jailbreak, but it can perform hacks on a compatible device that resemble jailbreak-only tweaks. Nugget works on iOS & iPadOS 17.0 and later, up to and including iOS & iPadOS 18.4 beta.
Those wanting to take advantage of Nugget’s new animated wallpaper features can download the latest version of the utility from the developer’s GitHub page.
