The Pixelmator team announced the news via splash screens in the Pixelmator Pro, Photomator and Pixelmator for iOS apps, which were all updated today.

If you’re a fan of the Pixelmator apps, there’s no need to worry; the companies said earlier that Pixelmator Pro, Photomator, and Pixelmator for iOS would all continue after the acquisition with no material changes.

Apple completes the Pixelmator acquisition

I’ve been using Pixelmator Pro daily as a capable Photoshop alternative. The software is packed with advanced features like vector drawing, Photoshop layer support, animations, AI effects, and more. I like its one-window interface with tabs, palettes and support for tabs, as well as its performance and ease of use.

The company was founded by two brothers, Saulius Dailide and Aidas Dailide, who wrote Pixelmator in Babrauninkai, a village in eastern Lithuania. The now popular graphics app made its debut in 2007  and was among the first Mac image editors to infuse image editing capabilities with seamless artificial intelligence features, such as background removal and automatic color adjustments.

The Pixelmator apps have been regularly updated with new features and improvements. These apps are some of the best citizens on the macOS platform as they quickly adopt core platform features, like CoreML and Metal. None of this went unnoticed with Apple, which announced in November 2024 that it was acquiring the company. The purchase price wasn’t disclosed.

“We have big news: the Pixelmator Team plans to join Apple,” the Pixelmator team wrote in a statement after the acquisition was announced. “It’s hard to fathom what a small group of dedicated people have accomplished.”
