Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the year of 2024, you’ve probably caught wind about all the efforts to bring the palera1n jailbreak to checkm8-vulnerable Apple TV units. This led to official support arriving in late July.
While palera1n on the Apple TV certainly left a lot to be desired compared to previous jailbreaks, the fact remained that it was very much a work in progress. Fortunately, Apple TV jailbreaking guru @nitoTV sparked a hint of hope this week after sharing a post to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that showcases the nitoTV plugin running on an Apple TV on tvOS 18.2 jailbroken by way of palera1n.
This is the first time we’ve seen nitoTV on tvOS 18, and it’s particularly exciting given that nitoTV has long served as a type of ‘package manager’ on the Apple TV platform in that it hosts tweaks and add-ons that Apple TV jailbreakers may find useful. One such example is vncserverd, which is a VNC server for iOS and tvOS 9.0 and later.
In addition to being the primary hub for installing tweaks and add-ons on jailbroken Apple TVs, nitoTV also provides a way to view and interact with file formats that aren’t normally supported on the device. That said, it has long made all the difference when it comes to a jailbroken versus a non-jailbroken Apple TV.
The palera1n jailbreak for tvOS 15.0 and later never received a completed package manager app, but rather shipped with a ‘somewhat working’ package manager when the palera1n team initially added tvOS support in July. Assuming things continue at the current rate, it seems entirely possible that nitoTV could once again appear on jailbroken Apple TV Home Screens, this time including those using the palera1n jailbreak.
It remains to be seen how far along @nitoTV is in bringing a fully working nitoTV experience to the palra1n jailbreak, or how long it might take for the palera1n team to incorporate it into the jailbreak. But time will surely tell. Likewise, we’ll be following the project closely and reporting on any major updates.
