The palera1n jailbreak, which relies on the venerable checkm8 hardware-based bootrom exploit to perform its magic, picked up a minor update this week in the form of version 2.1 beta 1.

The update, announced in a post shared to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by the palera1n team early Monday morning, seems heavily related to tvOS and the recent iPadOS 17.7.3 software update.
Citing the official change log, palera1n v2.1 beta 1 introduces the following changes:
- Full tvOS 18.2 bindFS and fakeFS support following introduction to SSV (signed system volume)
- Newfangled iPadOS 17.7.3 support
At this time, the tvOS support isn’t yet rootless, but this will come in time as rootless is effectively the future of jailbreaking. The tvOS portion of the palera1n jailbreak remains an active work in progress.
The palera1n jailbreak is the only public jailbreak at this time that supports any version of iOS or iPadOS 17 and 18. This is because palera1n relies on a bootrom exploit in certain hardware that Apple cannot fix with a mere software update.
There is plausible speculation that iPadOS 19 will drop support for the remaining iPads that palera1n supports, but even if that happens, supported devices will remain jailbreakable for their effective work life as Apple does not plan to fix the hardware exploit.
If you’re not already using the latest version of the palera1n jailbreak, then you can get your hands on it from the project’s GitHub repository page.
The palera1n jailbreak, which is semi-tethered, supports A8-A11 chip-equipped iPhones and iPads. Software support includes iOS & iPadOS 15 and later, while the actual jailbreak tool can be used on either macOS or Linux.
