Another day, another bit of exciting news for legacy iOS devices and firmware versions. There appears to be a new jailbreak tool on the block for 32-bit devices running iOS 8.0-9.0.2, and it’s being called EverPwnage by the developer, LukeZGD.
Citing the EverPwnage GitHub page, this jailbreak is open source and supports the following device types:
- iPhone 5c
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 4s
- iPad (2nd generation)
- iPad (3rd generation)
- iPad (4th generation)
- iPad mini (1st generation)
- iPod touch (5th generation)
There are some caveats to EverPwnage that the GitHub page makes clear, including the fact that support for iOS 9.0.x remains experimental and limited and that it’s restricted to A6(X) devices only because of issues with A5(X) devices.
Likewise, there is an Install Untether toggle in the jailbreak app that can be used to install the daibutsu untether, but only on certain firmware versions. EverPwnage enables the toggle by default on supported devices, but users have the option of disabling the toggle for a semi-untethered experience if they prefer that.
Unsupported devices with respect to the daibutsu untether include any device running iOS 9.0.x and A5(X) devices running iOS 8.0-8.2. These devices can still jailbreak with EverPwnage, but the jailbreak will be semi-tethered rather than untethered.
Supported devices with respect to the daibutsu untether include A5(X) devices running iOS 8.3-8.4.1 and A6(X) devices running iOS 8.0-8.4.1. These devices can be fully untethered when jailbreaking with EverPwnage.
The developer says that users of certain jailbreaks, including EtasonJB, HomeDepot, and openpwnage can switch to the daibutsu untether by simply jailbreaking with the EverPwnage tool and enabling the Install Untether toggle at that time.
Users of Pangu8, Pangu9, TaiG, PPJailbreak, and a few other less common alternatives are advised not to use EverPwnage, as they are already untethered and switching isn’t necessary.
EverPwnage can be considered another tool in the box for anyone with a supported legacy device who wants to jailbreak untethered. Moreover, as jailbreak commentator @MasterMike88 correctly points out in a post shared to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), EverPwnage doesn’t have a lot of the frustrating strings attached that other jailbreaks for these devices and version had previously.
If you’re interested in learning more about or trying the EverPwnage jailbreak tool, then you can acquire it from the project’s GitHub page.
While this isn’t a jailbreak for the latest devices and firmware versions, it’s still great that people are coming up with jailbreaks and tools that offer more access to jailbroken devices for more users.
